Bartlesville Public School District s Weekly Email Newsletter The Bruin Volume 8, Number 38...Friday, June 13, 2014...www.bps-ok.org All elementary schools throughout the district are now equipped with security cameras including Hoover Elementary School which is pictured above. Security cameras added throughout BPSD as part of 2013 bond issue The Bartlesville Public School District recently completed the installation of over 200 security cameras at sites throughout the BPSD. The project was part of the $36.72 million bond issue passed in September 2013. As part of the bond issue, roughly $1.4 million was designated for safety and security items, with an improved camera surveillance system being one of the main priorities. The safety and security of our students and staff is vitally important. By increasing the number of security cameras we have throughout our district, we are able to better monitor our facilities and add an additional level of security for our district, said BPSD Superintendent Dr. Gary W. Quinn. In total, 220 high resolution cameras have been added at sites throughout the district. Bartlesville High School had 49 new cameras installed, and Bartlesville Mid-High School had 45 cameras installed. Meanwhile, each of the six elementary sites had between 16 and 19 cameras installed. The Will Rogers Complex, Education Service Center and transportation building had security cameras installed as well. Central Middle School will receive new security cam- CAMERAS- Continued to page 7 Superintendent s Chalkboard Summer months provide time for BPSD employees to learn Throughout the academic year, which spans August through May, Bartlesville Public School District staff members and teachers work extremely hard educating and Dr. Gary W. Hoover and Wayside awarded money through A+ Rewards Program Bartlesville Monthly Magazine and Washington Park Mall partnered to create the A+ Rewards program to encourage shopping locally at Washington Park Mall. The program, which ran August through May, allowed shoppers to deposit mall receipts into drop-boxes located at the mall. Each drop-box was labeled with a Bartlesville or Dewey school, and mall patrons could put the receipt in the box of their choice. A first, second and third place winner was then calculated based on total dollar amount of receipts collected per school. As a result, Wayside finished second winning $3,000 while Hoover finished third winning $2,000. Dewey Elementary School finished first and won $5,000. The program will begin again in August so be sure to support your favorite local school when shopping at the mall! Emergency response training to be held at Will Rogers Complex in July CAMERAS-Continued from page 1 eras as part of the school renovation project which will take place during the 2015-16 school year. I am extremely pleased that we were able to get this project completed, particularly at our elementary sites where we previously did not have security cameras, added Quinn. All security cameras throughout the district have the ability to be remotely accessed by site administrators as well as school resource officers. With verified login credentials, administrators can monitor their site at any given time. To ensure ease of use, BPSD technology staff received eight hours of training on the use and Washington County Emergency Management will be providing Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training at the Will Rogers Complex, 4620 E. Frank Phillips Blvd., during the month of July. The four-hour training program will be offered on July 15, 22, 23, 28 and 29 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The CERT training program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area, and trains attendees in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Through skills learned in the classroom and training exercises, CERT members can assist others in their school, neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members are also encouraged to support local emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their school or community. The program is being offered free of charge, and led by Director of Washington County Emergency Management Kary Cox. To attend you must be at least 18 years of age. Please contact Kerry Ickleberry at IckleberryKG@bpsok.org to reserve your spot as space is limited. configuration of the cameras and recording equipment. Administrators were provided instruction by BPSD technology staff on how to effectively use the system, and a training session will be provided for administrators prior to the start of the 2014-15 school year. The project was led by Digi Surveillance Systems in coordination with the BPSD technology department. BPSD Director of Technology Lori Patterson said, The staff at every site was very supportive and accommodating during the entire project, and we now have a very good level of surveillance protection throughout the district. CHALKBOARD- Continued from page 1 ployees boast strong educational backgrounds and many years of work experience, we seek to offer our employees professional development and training opportunities on our district initiatives to enhance their knowledge and abilities. Two of the most intensive professional development opportunities we offer are Data Teams and Great Expectations. Data Teams training is used to help our teachers and administrators improve instructional practices. Data analyzed, ranging from classroom work to demographic material, is used to help teachers and administrators better individualize the learning experience for students and improve overall student achievement. Great Expectations training is available to all BPSD employees. Certified as well as classified employees partake in Great Expectations training which typically occurs each summer at the end of July. Great Expectations is a professional development program which offers our employees the skills they need to implement Great Expectations principles in the education of our children. Additionally, our district provides a two-day training and orientation program for all teachers beginning their first year with the BPSD. This program allows teachers to learn about the BPSD and the expectations associated with being a teacher in Bartlesville. The program also enables teachers to learn about district initiatives and special programs. Ultimately, all employees throughout our district spend a great deal of time with our students, and the opportunity they have to touch the lives of many youngsters simply cannot be overstated. I feel strongly that we must put professional development and training programs in place to allow our employees to be as successful and effective as possible while educating our most precious resource, our children.
