Issue Gospel #: [Date] Reflection Twenty-sixth Sunday in O rdinary Time, Year A September 28, 2014 Lectionary: 136 Read: Matthew 21:28-32 Gospel Summary Jesus pointed out to chief priest and elders that they had not believed John nor had they changed their hearts after seeing Jesus. They were like the son who said yes to his father s request to work in the vineyard. Even though he said he would, the son did not work. The father s second son (representing sinners) said no to his father s request, but went to the vineyard and worked after all. Jesus said it would be those who are like the second son who would enter the Kingdom first. Reflection for Families The parish parking lot on Sunday morning helps illustrate this parable. We say yes, we believe as we worship inside our churches, but when we get to the parking lot (and work, school, neighborhood), we imitate the first son by not acting out our yes. Bringing the Gospel Into Your Family We are free to make choices. As a family, try to choose something of notice in your parish community. Perhaps there s a request for help in the bulletin, or parish announcements. Maybe you are aware of a need for service in your community or from something you read in the newspaper. Try to say yes as a family and serve someone with your response. Discussion Starters 1. Sometimes it s hard for me to obey, especially when 2. There have been times I have said yes but didn t follow through with my commitment. The reason for this is usually because 3. Sometimes I say yes to God even when it s hard. One of those times is when Used with permission. Copyright 2011 RCL Benziger. All rights reserved. 3

Issue #: [Date] NELLY OPEN Second Annual NELLY OPEN Charitable Golf Outing On Saturday, October 4th, the Kevin F. Kennelly Scholarship Fund will host the Second Annual NELLY OPEN Charitable Golf Tournament at Gleneagles Country Club, 13070 McCarthy Road, Lemont, IL.. The NELLY OPEN is an event dedicated to supporting the Kevin F. Kennelly, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund. As you well know, at the age of 17, Kevin, nicknamed Nelly by his friends, tragically lost his life when he stepped in to prevent an argument on July 4 th, 2011. Kevin was an excellent student, strong athlete and best friend to many. The memorial fund serves to honor Kevin s memory by giving back to the community and the school that he so dearly loved. The fund awards annual scholarships to Mt. Carmel High School to eighth grade students who embrace the ideals of family, work, tradition, and community as Kevin did throughout his young life. In the past two years, the scholarship fund has granted nearly $77,000 in tuition awards to local teens entering their freshman year at Mt. Carmel. We would like to take this opportunity to wish this year s St. Barnabas scholarship recipients, HUGH DEVANE and WILL MURPHY, the best of luck as they begin their academic careers at Mt. Carmel. The cost is $125 per golfer and includes golf, cart, snack-at-the-turn and dinner. Dinner alone is $50. If you are interested in participating or providing a sponsorship at any level, please contact Loretta Kennelly via email at l_kennelly@sbcglobal.net or by calling 773-881-8237.
