Please note: High School Summer School Offerings 2016 For Students entering Grades 9 12 All high school summer school classes will take place at PHOENIX MIDDLE SCHOOL. Questions regarding summer school for grades 9 12 should be directed to: Dean Furton 728 2642 ext. 4473 Amanda Urmanski 728 2642 ext. 4468 Students should sign up for courses for the grade level they will be enrolled in during the Fall 2016 semester. Courses may be cancelled due to lack of enrollment or availability of staff. Families will be notified if a class is cancelled. It is important to the success of this program that students honor the commitment to attend the classes for which they have registered. Please notify the school if your student is no longer able to attend. All classes are filled on a first come; first served basis using enrollment forms. You will be contacted if the course you register for is full. Busing will be provided. Busing schedules are still being determined. Check our Summer School website for updates. Classes run from 8:00 10:00 and 10:05 12:05. If students are taking the bus to/from summer school, they MUST take a full schedule. Students will not be permitted to have unscheduled breaks in their schedule unless they have their own transportation and will leave after their classes. Breakfast will be provided at no cost to students from 7:30 a.m. until 7:55 a.m. Lunch will be provided at no cost to students from 12:05 12:25 P.M. Please be sure to include any health concerns for your students on the registration form. SUMMER SCHOOL RULES / DISMISSAL POLICY Student participation in summer school is not required in the same way it is during the regular school year. If behavior and attendance rules are broken during the summer term, the summer school principal can dismiss a student from summer school. If a student violates classroom rules and must be removed from the classroom, the parent/guardian will be contacted. In the case of a second violation of the rules, a student will be dismissed from the rest of the summer school program. Every attempt should be made to attend each time the class is in session. To get the most out of the summer session, your student should have perfect attendance. This allows for maximum state aid to reimburse the district at minimum cost so we can continue to offer summer school options. 2

Non Credit Offerings Summer Orchestra Students entering grades 9 12 Tuesdays and Thursdays Only June 21st July 28th 8:00AM 10:00AM Join the Advanced Orchestra for a musical adventure this summer! Students will learn a variety of music from different time periods and genres, and will perform 1 2 concerts. Students will enhance instrument skills, music theory, and sight reading with musical exercises and songs. High School Band Camp Students entering grades 9 12 Students signed up for Marching Band and Percussion Ensemble are expected to attend band camp. Leadership Training Day is on 7/25 from 8:00 4:00. Drum Line Day is on 7/26 and 7/27 from 8:00 4:00. New Member Day is on 7/28 from 8 12. Band Camp will run Monday, August 1st Friday, August 5th from 8:00 4:00. An hour lunch break will be given from 12:00 1:00 during camp week. Students will be expected to provide their own lunch. There will be a Preview Performance showcasing the students progress on Friday, August 5th at 6:30. Early, Credit Bearing Courses (These are six week courses) All courses offered are for credit. As such, no more than 2 days of class can be missed. If more than 2 days of school are missed, that course requirement will NOT have been met, and credit will not be granted. Health and Wellness(½ credit) Students entering grades 9 12 Monday, June 20th Friday, July 29th The saying goes, If you have your health you have everything. In this course you will learn about wellness, the importance of nutrition, your growing body and changes over the life cycle, the impact of alcohol and other drugs, and communicable and non communicable diseases. This class will also introduce the principles of health education through nutrition, aerobic fitness, and mental, social and emotional wellness. The course includes discussion of values, peer pressure, and decision making. The course includes: First Aid and CPR, mental health, stress management, nutrition,and alcohol and drugs. This is essential knowledge for everyone and particularly for young adults who are establishing health habits that will last a lifetime. This course covers the complete high school health requirement (formerly Health 9 and Healthy Lifestyles). Summer School PE (½ credit) Students entering grades 9 12 Monday, June 20th Friday, July 29th Students will be able to earn a ½ credit toward their physical education graduation requirement. Students may only take Summer School PE one time. Students must take one PE class over 3 separate years at DDHS. COURSE NOTE: Students will be required to pay a $5 fee for inline skate rental 3

Online Business & Personal Finance (½ credit) Students entering grades 11 12 June 13 August 5, 2016 This course have five main themes: Planning Personal Finances, Banking and Credit, Investing Financial Resources, Protecting Your Finances, and Business Finance Basics. Students will create a personal budget and learn how to use it. Students will compare advantages and disadvantages of renting vs. buying a house. Students will compare the advantages and disadvantages of leaving vs. buying a car. Students will learn about home, auto, health, disability, and life insurance. COURSE NOTE: This course fulfills the financial literacy graduation requirement. Sustainable Urban Agriculture (½ credit) Students entering grades 11 12 Monday, June 20th Friday, July 29th Do you like to eat? Do you like to make money? This class is offered as a summer school credit! It is an extension of the Sustainable Urban Ag class, and allows you to put to work the business and marketing plan developed in that class. You will grow your product and market it, possibly at the Delavan Farmer s Market and keep records of your business. You keep all of the money you may make. You carryout your plan to grow and market your products! Delavan has a Farmer s Market on Thursday afternoons through out the spring and summer. Will enable students to learn about the social ecology of a community or the relationship between human society, all living plants and animals and the environment Students will document their project through paperwork and pictures COURSE NOTE: This course can fulfill either the "Financial Literacy" requirement or the CTEC requirement. Credit Recovery, Credit Bearing Courses All courses offered are for credit. As such, no more than 2 days of class can be missed. If more than 2 days of school are missed, that course requirement will NOT have been met, and credit will not be granted. Compass Odyssey Students entering grades 10 12 Monday, June 20th Friday, July 29th Students who failed a course with a 50 59% will have the opportunity to recover the credit for that course by taking an Odyssey course in summer school. The following courses are offered for credit recovery through Compass Odyssey; Algebra 1 Geometry Biology Chemistry Physical Science English 9 English 10 English 11 4

English 12 Health U.S. History 1 U.S. History 2 Skills will be identified that the student will need to master to demonstrate that they have met the standards and skills for that course. Students will be expected to attend daily until they have successfully recovered the credit and at that time are no longer required to attend summer school. *Students are encouraged to check their transcripts or schedule an appointment with their counselor to determine if they are eligible for any of these courses. ENRICHMENT COURSES (Non Credit Bearing Courses) Scratch Programming or Introduction to Software Engineering Students Entering Grades 9 12 Monday, June 20th Friday, July 15th This course places students into the shoes of a software engineer. It is a project based course where students will learn how software is developed through the use of a program called Scratch. Over the course of the class, students will work in groups to develop their own game by implementing basic engineering concepts and principles. Basic computer skills are encouraged prior to taking this course. There are no math requirements. Introduction to Algebra II Students Entering Grades 9 12 Monday, June 20th Friday, July 15th This summer school course is a transitional course that establishes the skills required to be successful in Algebra II. In order to sign up for this course students must have completed Algebra I and Geometry, and also be signed up to take Algebra II during the next year. This course creates connections between student s prior learning and the skills that will make the transition to Algebra II a success. A sample of topics covered includes, simplifying radicals, proportions, functions, graphing, inequalities, polynomials and factoring. After successfully completing this course students will have developed the skills to be successful in Algebra II. ACT Prep Students Entering Grades 10 12 Monday, June 20th Friday, July 15th Are you interested in improving your ACT score? Have you never taken the ACT test? In addition to achieving a high score to improve college entrance and scholarship opportunities, the State of Wisconsin also requires all 11th grade students to take the ACT. This course will provide a variety of practical test taking strategies, test preparation resources, an overview of the test and the opportunity to simulate taking the ACT test. Exploring Engineering Students Entering Grades 9 11 Monday, June 20th Friday, June 24th Exploring Engineering is a one week opportunity for students to participate in hands on projects that cover a wide range of engineering disciplines. Students will discover the basics of computer programm ing and 5

investigate the fundamentals of electricity and circuits. Students will take part in problem solving projects and competitions that use physics concepts to test the strength of structures used in civil engineering and other objects they experience in their everyday lives. Mural Painting Students Entering Grades 9 12 Monday, July 11th July 15th 8:00AM 10:00AM or 10:05AM 12:05 PM Join the DDHS Art Department in a school beautification project! We will be working as a group to paint at least one mural that will be displayed permanently in the high school. No prior art courses or special ability required, just the ability to paint NEATLY! Specialized (Individualized) Topics in History Summer Seminar Students Entering Grades 9 12 Monday, July 11th Friday, July 22nd 8:00AM 10:00AM For the avid history fan, this is the perfect course for you to explore student chosen topics in history! With an emphasis on individualized research, this course is designed to meet the specific interests of each student and allow them to better understand their chosen topic of study. This course will culminate with a seminar to allow students to share their topics and research. Realities of College Recruiting Students Entering Grades 9 12 Monday s and Tuesday s ONLY The following are the dates of this class; Monday, June 20th Tuesday, June 21st Monday, June 27th Tuesday, June 28th Monday, July 11th Tuesday, July 12th 8:00AM 10:00AM Athletic College Recruiting for High School Students is a class that will help prepare student athletes for the world of college athletics. We will be discussing what student athletes should be looking for in a college and how to apply to them. This will give the student an in depth look at the collegiate athletic recruiting process. Students will be also finding out about the financial part of college including: tuition costs, cost of room and board, scholarships, and to how to fill out FAFSA. We will be having college coaches coming in to discuss what they look for in student athletes. This will give students time to sit down and actually start learning about and filling out paperwork to attend the next level. Please don t fall into the trap of thinking, the colleges and or coaches will find my child! You must go out and do it yourself. AP Government Prep Students Entering Grades 11 12 Monday, June 27th Friday, July 8th 8:00AM 10:00AM An introduction to American government. In this class you will learn the basic philosophies of government, an overview of the three branches, and an introduction to political theory. 6
