Page 2 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Bonnie Householder Our Jekyll Island Arts Association calendar year has started with lots of activity and fun things to do. As you may recall, the Board approved making a donation for the art departments in Glynn County Schools as part of our community outreach. It was our privilege to represent JIAA at the School Board Meeting in downtown Brunswick. Attending were Susie Corbett, Vice President; Betty Smith, Past President and current JIAA Instructor; Jane Battles, JIAA Instructor and retired Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Ohio; Mahlon Stacy, our photographer and JIAA Photography Instructor; Joan Shinnick, retired Glynn Schools art teacher and I. Dr. Howard Mann, Superintendent of Schools, welcomed us warmly and thanked JIAA for our support. Classes have grown so much that some are being held at the Jekyll Island United Methodist Church and we are glad to partner with the church. They have been very welcoming to us as we use their facilities for classes, programs, and meetings. One way we can support their community outreach is to provide them with items to give back to the community. If you buy Campbell s soup, keep the labels to donate for Vashti Youth Home. Just drop the labels into the square Campbell s container on the table in the hallway outside the sanctuary. There is a box there for donations for Sparrow s Nest and non-perishable foods can be placed in that box. A pack and play is being filled with donations of baby items for Carenet, the Crisis Pregnancy Center. And in the parking lot is a bin with a yellow top put used clothing and shoes only in that in any condition. They will appreciate your partnership support in these efforts. Your 42 nd Annual Arts Festival Committee has been working diligently towards their goal of having the best Arts Festival ever! We have partnered with several lo- JIAA Newsletter cal entities and for the first time ever, are recognizing sponsors. More on that in this newsletter... Susie Corbett, Vice President, is working on a Program schedule that will have something for everyone and we hope you ll find something of interest to attend. In case you missed it, the Brunswick News carried a wonderful article by one of our members, Donna Stillinger, who is their regular Jekyll Island columnist. Donna s story about her Mah Jong class described the fun she was having learning a new subject. She talked about a couple other classes that she was interested in pursuing, too, and in at least one case, her class description resulted in a former member rejoining JIAA and signing up for the class. Thank you, Donna, for your ongoing support and reflection of JIAA. The Jekyll Island Arts Association is an all volunteer, member based organization and as such, we need volunteers to serve in many capacities. If you have an afternoon free and are willing to be the front desk volunteer, we can use your help. If you are interested in learning how to set up an exhibit for our monthly exhibits of member works, we can use your help. If you are willing to help at the March 11-13 Annual Festival, we can use your help. You only get out of life what you put into it and that holds true for JIAA as well. To volunteer, just drop an email to jiaaboard@gmail.com and put Volunteer in the subject line. Give us your name, email and phone number and we will get in touch with you. There is lots going on and it s a great time to be a JIAA member many ways to get involved! MEMBERSHIP NEWS.. Craig Patterson MEMBERSHIP NEWS Craig Patterson Your JIAA membership dues for the 2016/2017 calendar year will be due starting 4/1. As you renew, either on the Website or by paper, please take the time to insure that your address, phone number and E-mail are correct. Correct information is important so that we can stay in contact with all members but it is especially important for members who sell goods in the shop; the address information in the database is what is used when mailing checks for items that have sold. Page 6 JIAA Newsletter Jekyll Island Arts Association Presents Gift to Glynn County Schools Arts Departments School was different when we were students, wasn't it? Today, teachers, especially teachers in the arts disciplines, find themselves teaching hundreds of students in a year, while struggling with a smaller budget than they would like. Glynn County, unlike many other districts who found themselves faced with the economic downturn in 2008, took a steadfast position in favor of the arts, arguing that maintaining their art departments was an important ingredient if they hope to continue turning out well-rounded individuals. The Jekyll Island Arts Association, in keeping with their history of community outreach, has focused on the needs of the Arts Departments of the Glynn County School System. On January 26, 2016, they shared their resources by presenting a check for $3,200 at the board meeting of the Glynn County Board of Education, representing a gift of $200 per school which will be used for classroom supplies by the art department teachers in each of the sixteen schools in Glynn County. The Jekyll Island Arts Association has members who are experts in their fields, and they have committed to personally go into classrooms at no charge to perform demonstrations in the areas of painting, photography, fiber arts, pottery and sculpture, glass arts, jewelry, literature and language arts, and music. Field trips to their home at the Goodyear Cottage in the historic district on Jekyll are always encouraged.
