Topics of Discussion Changing U.S. Demographics Diversity in Higher Education How Diversity is Achieved at Rutgers Coalition Application 3

Changing U.S. Demographics U.S. population is projected to change dramatically by 2060 Will see significant increases in population of Asian, Hispanic, and Two or More Races Non-Hispanic whites projected to become majority-minority by 2044 Notes: Minority defined as all groups other than non-hispanic white. Source: U.S. Census Bureau, 2014 National Projections (March 2016) 4

Distribution of U.S. Population Under 18 by Race and Hispanic Origin 2014 v. 2016 Notes: AIAN=American Indian and Alaska Native. NHPI=Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islanders. Source: U.S. Census Bureau, 2014 National Projections (March 2016) 5

Inequality in Higher Education 82% of newly enrolled white students have gone to the 468 most selective colleges 72% of newly enrolled Hispanic and 68% of newly enrolled African American students have gone to 2- year and 4-year openaccess schools African American and Hispanic student enrollment has been confined to mostly open-access schools, 1995-2009 Attending top schools in the country gives students (regardless of test scores) a much better change of graduating from college compared to open-access schools Notes: Source: Georgetown Center on Education and Workforce, Separate and Unequal (July 2013) 6

Higher Education Opportunity or Privilege To address inequalities, it is critically important to the nation that we admit and graduate diverse student bodies from our best colleges Inequalities, left uncorrected, lead to social divisions and discontent We need leaders that are representative of the diversity of our nation Diverse voices at tables where decisions are made bring the interests of everyone to the table resulting in a more thoughtful, comprehensive solution to complex problems 7

How is Diversity in Higher Education Achieved? Build the pipeline Enhance awareness Use holistic review Mission/rankings Develop a robust financial aid model Be systematic in establishing a competitive pool of applicants 8

Diversity in Higher Education Why Is It Important? Enriches the educational experience Promotes personal growth and a healthy society Strengthens communities and the workplace Enhances America s economic competitiveness A college degree is critical to economic independence, and reduces costs in the future College graduates pay more taxes, reduce reliance on government support, and lower crime rates Positive impact on their communities 9

Diversity is more than Race/Ethnicity Socioeconomic Status Rural/Urban/Suburban In-State/Out-of-State/International Race/Ethnicity Gender Academic Quality Academic Interest Special Talents State Requirements (EOF) Religious/Cultural Nontraditional (Adult Learners, Veterans) Disability 10

How Diversity is Achieved at Rutgers Holistic Application Review Financial Aid Honors College Rutgers Future Scholars 11

Holistic Application Review What we consider when reviewing an undergraduate applicant file: High school performance Grade-point averages Grade trends Completion of required entrance courses Strength of academic program, evidenced by the number of academic, honors, or advanced placement courses completed SAT and/or ACT scores English Proficiency Examination results Extra-curricular activities/leadership Essay Employment Performance in local context 12

Financial Aid Cost of College Tuition and Fees Room and Board Books and Supplies Personal Expenses Transportation Rutgers Total financial aid budget approx. $1 billion annually Commitment to Diversity Provide accessible higher education for all academically deserving students, regardless of family financial circumstances Tuition Increases Commit 20% to need-based aid to help offset the cost for low-income students EOF Program Commit 10% of our first-year slots to lowincome students from NJ New Financial Aid Programs Aimed at Making College More Affordable Rutgers-Camden Bridging the Gap Rutgers-Newark RU-N to the Top 13

What is the Coalition? A consortium of public and private colleges and universities (over 90 institutions) A new college planning, search and application platform with tools designed for: Collection of students work and active reflection on progress College search and exploration Engagement and collaboration with mentors Application to member institutions 19

Coalition Membership Must have at least a 70% 6-year graduation rate Public institutions must provide affordable tuition to residents Private institutions must be committed to meeting students full financial need 20

Current Member Institutions American University Amherst College Bates College Bowdoin College Brown University Bryn Mawr College California Institute of Technology Carleton College Claremont McKenna College Clemson University Colby College Colgate University College of the Holy Cross College of William & Mary Colorado College Columbia University Connecticut College Cornell University Dartmouth College Davidson College Duke University Emory University Franklin and Marshall College Franklin W. Coalition Aims and Values Coalition aims to develop a platform that will provide a supportive college exploration and application process Underlying values include: Admissions process benefits from continued innovation, improvement, and change Early engagement supports under-resourced students during college preparation Technology can help level the playing field in college exploration Together members can do more to meet goals than through stand-alone institutional efforts 22

What Does the Coalition Offer? Offers a single, integrated platform to plan, build, organize, and engage students throughout the college process Simplifies the application process to Coalition member schools not currently served by other shared online application services Allows students to engage with their support network (school counselors at schools without a college planning technology platform, CBOs, or mentors) Platform is fully responsive and adaptive, accessible through any computer, tablet, or mobile device 23

Why did Rutgers Join? Coalition provides Rutgers-New Brunswick access to a national application platform Coalition provides Rutgers-New Brunswick with efficiencies and functionalities not previously available to us from other platforms Our experience in successfully educating firstgeneration and underrepresented students can help shape the Coalition s development 24

What about College Access? The Coalition is acting on its mission of access via the outreach initiatives of its individual members to underserved students and the advisors who work with them, and through its independent outreach as a consortium to organizations that serve these students The Coalition offers a free space for school counselors and mentors to engage with their students, monitor their progress, provide advice on required courses, and advise on application steps Platform is especially important for schools and CBOs not serviced by existing technology The interest and commitment to access is one that the Coalition and its member institutions recognize needs our active involvement, and will not be fulfilled without the experience of counselors and mentors who serve under-resourced students 25

How will the Coalition be used by Rutgers-New Brunswick? Rutgers-New Brunswick will add the Coalition Application to our current application options Students will have a choice of either platform for 2017 We will provide clear instructions about admissions criteria and required documents for students using the Coalition Application. Requirements will be the same regardless of the application platform students use 26

Rutgers and the Coalition Rutgers-New Brunswick will be a choice on our traditional Undergraduate Admissions application platform Students interested only in New Brunswick schools may use either the Coalition Application or the local Rutgers application Students interested in Rutgers-Camden and/or Rutgers-Newark, alone or in conjunction with Rutgers- New Brunswick, must use our Rutgers application platform Students will receive equal admissions consideration when using either application platform Students should choose the one that best suits their needs 27

Requirements on the Coalition We will continue to require the Self Reported Academic Records (SRAR) for all current high school seniors A SRAR is included on the Coalition We will not request any additional documents from/for the Coalition that are different from what is requested on our local application We will request the same extracurricular, community service, family obligations, and employment on each application platform 28

Virtual Locker A private and optional repository for select works students choose to upload and save throughout high school The Locker and its contents are not visible to colleges and universities, and colleges and universities will never have access to student Lockers The Locker is private, accessible only to the student with his/her login credentials Students must take deliberate action to share an item out of the Locker 29

Application Portal Through the search function, students designate the schools to which they will apply Complete components of a Coalition Application Profile Application Programs Official Documents (requested by school) Supplements (requested by school) Documents (requested by school) Review & Submit 30

April 2016 Important Dates Virtual Locker, Collaboration Space Now available July 2016 Application Portal Live (institutions choose when students may begin submitting applications) September 2016 Rutgers will make both the native UUA application and the Coalition application available for student use 31
