A long history We are a Student s Union with a proud and rich heritage that tracks back to the late 1800 s and has its roots at the forefront of civil rights and student activism. The Union operates as a student-led organisation, established in 1861 representing all students at the University of Manchester. We are proud to be the largest students union in the country, with 40,000 members, at a university ranked 47th in the world, 11th best in Europe and 7th best in the UK (the Times Higher Education World University Ranking). We are a registered charity with a turnover in excess of 7 million per year. The Students Union is at the heart of student life which encompasses a diverse menu of opportunity including advice and welfare services, academic representation, change initiatives through campaigning and democracy, student leadership opportunities though over 450 student clubs, societies. A huge array of volunteering opportunities exist all underpinned by a range of training and development activity along with our wide range of commercial activities including the iconic Manchester Academy venue next door to the main Students Union. The Union and University are jointly investing over 8million over the next two years in redeveloping the Union building adding space to our already extensive presence on the Oxford Road. In addition to more space, we will be realigning our services to better meet the needs of students with the aim to increase participation and involvement as well as better the experience for all concerned. More information on the building development can be found here: manchesterstudentsunion.com/future-union A new strategy Alongside the building redevelopment we have spent the last six months undertaking the largest student-life survey we have ever administered. Consulting with over five thousand students we have identified a set of behaviours and attitudes specific to five student segments. This will shape the basis of our brand new strategic plan, which is being developed over the coming months. This role will play a central part in driving forward our strategic ambitions over the next three to five years ensuring we become a key force for change on campus. 3

Ambitious and striving for excellence We set ourselves stretching targets and seek to be the very best in what we do Our Officers The Union is a registered charity whose trustee board comprised eight elected sabbatical officers (see below) plus three external and three student trustees General Secretary Responsible for the Union s internal affairs, including its governance and democratic processes. They are the Chair of the Trustee Board and represent the student body on the University s Board of Governors. They are the primary link of communication between the Students Union and the University and are responsible for the Students Union s relationship with the National Union of Students. Campaigns and Citizenship Responsible for matters affecting students in wider society and at a national level, supporting campaigns for positive change through community organising and student-led campaigns. Representing the student perspective to broader society issues and vice versa. 5

Activities and Development Responsible for supporting the Union s extracurricular activities, including Societies, Volunteering, Raising and Giving, Student Media and student-led events such as Pangaea. Liaison with the University on their extra-curricular programmes such as Community Engagement, Social Responsibility and the Manchester Award. Wellbeing Responsible for matters affecting the wellbeing of students through a range of campaigns, partnership activity with wider support services and key liaison with the Union s Advice centre. Represent student welfare issues to the wider community. Community Responsible for matters affecting students in their local community and the Manchester area by supporting a network of community based representatives and liaising with key community stakeholders such as the council, public services and Manchester Student Homes. Diversity Responsible for matters affecting underrepresented students and students who are affected by social injustice. Campaigning for greater awareness and inclusion within the student and wider community through liberation campaigns and supporting specific student groups. Women s Officer- Responsible for leading the Students Union s Women s campaigns, and for covering matters affecting women s inclusion and welfare. They represent women students to the University and wider society. Education Concerned with matters affecting students in their studies, leading the student representative scheme and championing education access and rights through sitting on a number of high-level committees within the University. 6

How we Work The Union is split into three directorates; the senior staff team is made up of four directors, the Union Director and one for each of the three directorates. Student Support and Involvement Delivering all of our membership engagement and student facing activity from our Advice centre through to societies, volunteering through to educational representation. Enterprise and Services Union commercial service and enterprise activity accounts for roughly two thirds of Union turnover providing opportunities for student staff and generating income to fund our student facing activity. As such we are one of the biggest social enterprises in the North West. Our activity is split into the following areas of work and aims to deliver a quality customer and stakeholder experience and return a great surplus on trading activity enabling bigger and better student activity to take place. The teams Education and Advocacy Advising and supporting students raise issues and feedback to enhance the student experience as well as campaigning for wider student and social change as well as our democratic, decision making processes. Marketing and Communications Being at the cutting edge of communicating our services to our members and wider stakeholders including our digital and social platforms Activities and Volunteering Supporting over 450 student-led groups, clubs, societies and a range of voluntary activity in the student and wider community Communities Supporting all halls based Residence Associations and Junior Common Rooms in developing community building activity in residences and targeted project activity for discrete groups of students such as students as parents Insight Complementing our representation activity in helping us become experts in the student community at Manchester through research and data analysis The teams Finance and Resources Manchester Academy and student events; Supporting and delivering a massive event programme including live music events, Pangaea and student led events. Bars Supporting the Union Bar and the venues bar. This area is the biggest employer of our student staff body. Catering and retail Managing Biko s Café, the Grab n Go shop, Biko s Bike, the on line retail store and delivering catering for the events held here in the Union building Underpinning the activity in the forward facing departments, Finance and resources are the activities that support the staff and infrastructure of the Union operations. This includes Finance, HR, IT, risk and compliance 7

The last two years have seen us sign the Time to Change pledge, become living wage accredited, gain Investors In People accreditation and win an NUS award for the most improved employee engagement index and we are building on this success through a variety of HR related projects and developments.
