LAKE AREA NEW TECH EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL AUGUST 14, 2017 Message from Our Principal and Chief Leopard Dr. Bethel E. Cager Dear Families and Friends, Welcome to the 2017-18 school year at Lake Area New Tech Early College High School. This school year is promised to be one of innovation and hard work that will lead to great reward - increased student achievement. We have gone through great lengths to introduce elements within the instructional day that will enrich and enhance the teaching and learning experience. Some highlights that you will hear about from students are as follows: Chromebook laptop for every student A/B Block Schedule (Students attend a class every other day and for the duration of the entire school year) Project-Based Learning with the following themes per grade level: o Seniors Gentrification in New Orleans o Juniors The Criminal Justice System in New Orleans o Sophomores - Food Deserts and Quality of Drinking Water in New Orleans o Freshmen Educational Levels and Jobs in New Orleans Gender-Based Homerooms (Morning Meetings) All young ladies will read Sister Citizen by Melissa Harris-Perry All young men will read The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander ACT Prep Courses for all 10 th and 11 th Grade Students A National Honor Society Chapter Friday Presentations from Colleges and Universities College Tours Lockers for every student Beautifully decorated girls restrooms Partnership with Dondre Whitfield from Queen Sugar Partnership with 100 Black Men of Metro New Orleans Partnership with Xavier University s chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated The above is not an exhaustive list. There are so many other things that are new to our school that you will hear your students talking about when they are at home with you. We want our students to be excited about learning, and we are determined to give them the highest quality of educational opportunities that will prepare them for post-secondary success and to take their rightful places as intelligent, strong, and socially conscious young adults in this world. After all, they are our future!!!! 6026 Paris Ave, New Orleans, LA 70122 2 Office: (504) 267-8811 Fax: (504) 510-2577

Parents, it is most important for us to have a partnership with you. We will be inviting you to participate in events throughout this school year. Establishing means to have two-way communication with you is what we are after. We will be sending out a survey in September to get your input and feedback on some pertinent topics, and on our calendar, you will find dates for our monthly Coffee with Cager and quarterly Parent Walkthroughs. Reminders of these parent activities will be sent to all parents. In closing, I want to thank you for sharing your beautiful children with us and allowing us to care for and educate them. I find the students of Lake Area New Tech Early College High School to be some of the smartest, most respectful, and most polite students I have ever met in my entire career, and I am deeply honored to have this opportunity to serve as their Principal and Chief Leopard. Parents, if you need me, please do not hesitate to contact me at bethel.cager@newbeginningsnola.net or at (504) 267-8811. We are Rockin It at the Lake!!!!! Educationally yours, Bethel E. Cager, Ph.D. Principal and Chief Leopard Dear Parents, Message From Our Lead Dean Mr. Michael Washington I take this opportunity to introduce myself and express my excitement about working with your child/ren this year. I am Michael Washington, Lead Dean of Lake Area New Tech Early College High School. My role as the Lead Dean is to ensure a safe environment for our students and staff, while ensuring the expectations of our school are carried out and maintained throughout the year. Assisting me with these tasks are two (2) Deans of Discipline and one (1) Academic Dean. There are high expectations for all students, as well as for parents, guardians, staff, and community members. We are all in this endeavor together. I also believe in students being responsible for their own behavior and in teaching them to be advocates for themselves. We all learn from experiencing and making mistakes; therefore, I believe in including corrective actions as part of the educational process. One of the most important aspects of learning is learning how to deal with the consequences of our actions. To this end, I am requesting your daily support by making sure that your child/ren adhere to the following expectations: 1. All students are to report to school on time daily. 2. Encourage your child/ren to follow instructions and directions the first time that they are given. 3. Insist that all requests for information are responded to respectfully and courteously. Be assured that as the leaders and teachers at this school, we will do the same. 4. Remind your child/ren to make sure that cell phones are turned off and stored away in their lockers during school hours. Should a student need to phone home during school hours, there are telephones in the main office, after gaining permission to use them. 6026 Paris Ave, New Orleans, LA 70122 3 Office: (504) 267-8811 Fax: (504) 510-2577

Your support in these regards is so vital if we are to have a successful school experience for our students at Lake Area High School this year. Again, I am excited about working with your child. I may be reached in one of the following manners: My office telephone number is 504-267-8811, and my email address is michael.washington@newbeginningsnola.net. Know that I welcome any questions or comments you may have, and I look forward to being an active partner with you for a great year. Sincerely, M.L. Washington, M.A Message From the Office of Parent and Community Engagement Liaison and Classroom Management Support Mrs. Leila Eames My name is Leila J. Eames. I am a retired educator from New Orleans Public Schools. I bring more than forty years of experience to the position of Parent and Community Engagement and Classroom Management Support Liaison. I have worked as a teacher, coordinator of instruction, specialist, director and associate superintendent of federal programs. For the past ten years, I have worked as a national educational consultant across the United States. This year, I am looking forward to working closely with families and staff at Lake Area New Tech Early College High School. We held our Family Orientation Night on Wednesday, July 26, 2017, where over 500 parents and students were in attendance. It was the first opportunity for families to meet our new principal and Chief Leopard, Dr. Bethel Cager. I will be calling parents this week to set up our first round table discussion about parent engagement at Lake Area High School. We intend to establish a PTA/PTO, booster clubs, 1 st Friday of the month Coffee with Cager, Dad s Club, round table discussion sessions and opportunities for parents to use computers in our parent center. Most of all, we are very interested in listening to your ideas and thoughts about making LANTECHS the best high school in the city. Our goal is to provide parents with the information required to help your children succeed! If you are interested in participating in any parent engagement activities, please call the school and leave your contact information. I look forward to meeting each of you this year. We are all ready to take Lake Area High School to the next level. STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Trinity Barnes, one of the top scholars from the class of 2019, will be leaving the Leopard s Den late next week to begin her semester of study at the The Mountain School of Milton Academy in Vershire, Vermont. While there, Trinity will be studying her core courses while working with her peers and teachers, engaging the surroundings of farm and forest in conjunction with intellectual inquiry and experiential learning. Trinity has the distinction of being the only student from Louisiana to be selected to attend this year. Upon her return to New Orleans and Lake Area in January, Trinity will be working toward college credit, taking classes through partnership with Delgado Community College in dual enrollment programming.
