We educate approximately 860 sixth,seventh and eighth graders who, in recent years, are consistently achieving above 800 on the Academic Performance Index (API). Our staff provides a rigorous academic program based on the California Content Standards and the Common Core standards, It is our mission to provide an encouraging learning environment to produce students that are thriving, responsible, lifelong learners. We maintain a block schedule which affords students increased learning time and extended opportunities for more in-depth, higher level analysis of curriculum content. Monte Vista continues to be a model CHAMPS site for the County of Ventura. CHAMPS is visible and viable throughout the campus. Students are regularly recognized for their good personal choices both academically and behaviorally. We at Monte Vista intend to maintain a world class environment with an emphasis on Maturity, Vision, Motivation, and Scholarship. Our main goal embedded throughout all of our Single Plan for Student Success is to engage and challenge every student at their appropriate level. Students are consistently monitored for extension and intervention programs where appropriate. Our Language Acquisition Team (LAT) works to assist all Language Learners. The ZAP (Zeros Are Not Permitted) before and after school program allows for additional guided practice opportunities for students. Our Honors program includes Geometry, Language Arts and Math. Our Science program includes a full adoption of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.) The Marine Biology elective for our Eighth Grade serves as an additional opportunity for more depth and complexity in Science. Our "Community Pillars Speaker Series" and STEM speakers bring in community leaders to share inspiration, leadership, and career exploration with our students. Monte Vista Middle School is an exciting place for students to learn and grow. We commit ourselves by embracing the latest research in combination with proven methods for success to help our students fully recognize and achieve their potential. School Profile Pleasant Valley School District consists of eleven schools serving grades kindergarten through eight. Monte Vista is one of two comprehensive middle schools in the Pleasant Valley School District. Monte Vista has an exceptional teaching and learning program that develops the total child. It is based upon mutual respect and close communication, as well as shared effective decision-making by staff, students, parents, and community to meet the needs of a diversified and growing population. Quality, Currency, Availability of Textbooks and Instructional Materials (School Year 2014-15) The school district held a public hearing on October 17, 2013, and determined that each school within the district had sufficient and good quality textbooks, instructional materials, or science lab equipment pursuant to the settlement of Williams vs. the State of California. All students, including English learners, are given their own individual standards-aligned textbooks or instructional materials, or both, in core subjects for use in the classroom and to take home. Textbooks and supplementary materials are adopted according to a cycle developed by the California Department of Education, making the textbooks used in the school the most current available. Materials approved for use by the State are reviewed by all teachers and a recommendation is made to the School Board by a selection committee composed of teachers and administrators. All recommended materials are available for parent examination at the district office prior to adoption. Cleaning Process Two full-time custodians (one day and one night) and a part-time custodian ensure that the cleaning of the school is maintained to provide for a clean and safe school. The district governing board has adopted cleaning standards for all schools in the district. A summary of these standards is available at the district office for review. Maintenance and Repair District maintenance staff ensures that the repairs necessary to keep the school in good repair and work orders are completed in a timely manner. A work order process is used to ensure efficient service and highest priority are given to emergency repairs. Deferred Maintenance Budget The district participates in the State School Deferred Maintenance Program, which provides matching funds on a dollar for dollar basis, to assist school districts with expenditures for major repair or replacement of existing school building components. Typically this includes roofing, plumbing, heating, electrical systems, interior or exterior painting, and floor systems. For the 2013-14 school year, the district allocated $249,269 for the deferred maintenance program. This represents 0.50% of the district s general fund budget. C. Engagement State Priority: Parental Involvement The SARC provides the following information relevant to the Parental Involvement State Priority (Priority 3): Efforts the school district makes to seek parent input in making decisions for the school district and each schoolsite. Opportunities for Parental Involvement Parents are always welcome at Monte Vista. Many find it helpful to communicate with teachers by email or telephone. We have an active PTSC, which sponsors major fund raising events, informational meetings and parent education events. It supports assemblies that focus on tolerance, healthy living, and making good choices. Parents participate in our School Site Council (SSC) to develop and approve the Single School Plan goals and budgets. Many parents of English learners participate on our English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) and provide input on the educational needs of their children. State Priority: School Climate The SARC provides the following information relevant to the School Climate State Priority (Priority 6): Pupil suspension rates; Pupil expulsion rates; and Other local measures on the sense of safety. School Safety Plan The safety of students and staff is a primary concern of Monte Vista Middle School. The school is always in compliance with all laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to hazardous materials and state earthquake standards. The School Site Safety Plan is reviewed and updated in the spring each year by the School Safety Committee. All revisions are communicated to both the classified and certificated staff. The school s disaster preparedness plan includes steps for ensuring student and staff safety during a disaster. Fire and disaster drills are conducted on a regular basis throughout the school year. Lockdown drills are held as needed. Students are supervised before and after school by Campus Supervisors and teachers, as well as during lunch and break periods. There is a designated area for student drop off and pick up. Visitors must sign in at the office and receive a badge, unauthorized visitors are not permitted on campus. Opportunities for training and staff development are provided at both the district and individual school sites to administrators, teachers, and classified staff. The district offers professional growth opportunities in curriculum, teaching strategies, and methodologies. Teachers are also given time to assess student achievement and work collaboratively to design instruction that is aligned to Common Core State Standards. Grade level teams participate in self guided professional development.
