Our mission is to create a collaborative and respectful school culture with a focused vision that supports the sharing of knowledge, professional growth and ongoing learning so that our students are enabled to reach high levels of achievement and to acquire the knowledge, skills, and values they need to become critical thinkers, problem solvers and responsible members of a democratic society. 408 Port Royal Trail, Scarborough, ON M1V 4R1 (416) 396-5595 PortRoyal@tdsb.on.ca JK to 8 Port Royal, a Kindergarten to Grade 8 school, opened in 1992. The school is named after Samuel de Champlain's Port Royal Habitation (1605), the first permanent settlement in Canada. Today, Port Royal is a Parks Canada National Historic Site in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. Our wonderful students are very proud of their school, that they will tell you, is the best school in Toronto! We serve a supportive community that has high expectations for educational success and achievement. School Focus For This School Year We will continue to implement literacy and numeracy initiatives (e.g. Interactive Whiteboard Math Project). We will build on our Character Education activities and make connections to Social Justice (e.g. local fundraising for various organization and continuing to work with Free the Children and "Me to We" initiatives). Our ESL students will continue to be assisted in their acquistion of the English language. We are an ECO school working towards platinum standing and we are a member of Schools On The Move. Also we have achieved platinum standing from Physical and Health Education Canada for our Daily Physical Activities program.

More Information about Port Royal Public School Literacy Our goal is to have the vast majority of students achieving at the Provincial standard of Level 3. We will focus our efforts to help move students to achieve at a higher level. Some of the strategies and actions we will use are: higher-order thinking skills (e.g. reasoning, analysing, drawing conclusions); asking better questions; and giving descriptive feedback. Numeracy Some students struggle with multiple choice and open response type questions in all math strands. Our goal is that most students will be able to demonstrate their thinking in open response while problem solving at level 3. All grades will participate in problem solving activities using differentiated instruction such as, using manipulatives, visuals and hands on tasks. Pathways Our goal is to improve our reading scores such that the vast majority of students are achieving at or above the provincial standard of level 3. Some of the strategies and actions we will use are: early identification of problems, guided reading groups, differentiated instruction, the Boys Book Club, reading clubs, after school mentoring, and Kids Now. Community Culture and Caring Student safety is our priority. We have implemented the Parent Safety Program, in partnership with Toronto Police and Parking Enforcement Officers. Staff and student volunteers assist students getting out of their cars every morning and escort young students to their entry doors. We also support our community through food drives, fundraising, Newcomer's Club and Kids Now. Additional Features For a list of all programs that are also offered visit http://www.tdsb.on.ca/findyour/schools.aspx?schno=4664&schoolid=1219
