Capacity Building Programme for Faculty Members in Social Sciences (16 th -29 th June, 2015) Sponsored by: Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi ABOUT THE PROGRAMME: Organized by: Faculty of Commerce,, Varanasi-221005 The Faculty of Commerce,, Varanasi proposes to organize a 2-weeks course on Capacity Building Programme for on Critical Research and Teaching-Leaning Process for the Young Faculty in Social Sciences during June 16 th (Tuesday) to June 29 th, 2015 (Monday). Research today has been one of the most important aspects in the academic pursuits of higher learning the world over and it provides the solutions to ever changing human problems. Continuous updation of knowledge in the research related matters is very much need of the hour. With special focus on cognitive skills in learning outcomes by way of developing research capabilities among the young faculties of the research institutions, colleges and Universities. The present training programme also aims to prepare the researchers capabilities to publishable material in the form of articles in journals and in books by providing a general understanding of the nature and relevance of the research methods. It will introduce
participants to the essential principles, techniques and processes of qualitative and quantitative research. In doing so, it will deal with various theoretical and methodological issues involved in such inquiry as well as the strategies and techniques such as research design, methods of qualitative data collection, coding and analysis involved in empirical field research. The present Capacity Building Programme is a initiative sponsored by Indian Council for Social Science Research. OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME: The following objectives of the course shall be adhered to: 1. Develop capacity for conceptualising and writing research proposals. 2. Enhance skills to prepare an appropriate research design, including conducting an overview of literature, formulating research questions and hypotheses, collection of information and their analysis. 3. Enhance capacity for writing a research paper for publication. 4. Develop the capacity for planning and writing a book. 5. Develop the capacity for grant applications. OVERVIEW OF COURSE MODULES: The course shall lay emphasis on interactive sessions, exercises and a discussion of sample research papers/outlines prepared by the participants during the training. The aim is to provide participants hands-on experience in preparing a project proposal and conducting a research project. The course is expected to benefit participants to develop in all disciplines of social sciences. There will also be an option for participants to specialize in either qualitative or quantitative methods. The course shall be conducted for 2 weeks duration which is self-contained and meant to provide participants actual experience in designing and executing a research proposal focusing on an integrated course structure evolving progressively from lower order to higher order skills ELIGIBILITY: The Capacity Building programme heartily welcome in the form of active participation by young Faculty members in Social Sciences of Commerce, Management, Economics, Sociology, Psychology, Education, Political Science and Law and allied disciplines. Only those faculty members are eligible to participate the programme. M.Phil / PhD. students are not eligible for this programme. This programme is sanctioned under the Special Component Plan for ST Government of India. Hence preference will be given to participants from ST category. However if required number of candidates in ST category are not available then candidates from SC, OBC, Minority, Women and General categories will be considered. The young faculty members in social sciences in any Indian University/ Institute are eligible to apply for the Capacity Building programme. Application will be entertained only if it is recommended by the Head of the Department/ Institution. REGISTRATION: There is no registration fee for the Capacity Building Programme. Interested candidates may send their duly filled in registration form to the Course Director on or before May 25 th, 2015. forwarded by Principal and Head of the College/Department/University/ Institute be accompanied by the following documents: 1. One page bio-data of the candidate along with academic certificates self attested photo copies (High School to PG). 2. Ph.D. registration certificate. 3. Two-page synopsis containing Title of Study, Statement of Problem, Scope of Study, Objectives of Study, Hypotheses, Census/Population/Sample design-sample Size, Sample Unit, Sampling frame, Data collection and Data Analysis. 4. Attested copy of Caste/Community certificate of ST/SC/OBC/Minority. 5. Research aptitude: (a) Write 400 words on the research and publication plan after the capacity building programme (attach separate sheet if necessary). (b) Write 400 words on any book/research report/article that you have read in the past one year (attach separate sheet if necessary). (c) Write 200 words on how research engagement will influence your teaching and engagement with the students(attach separate sheet if necessary). Please submit a Research aptitude of any interested field of research paper with a title of the paper inclusively based on Social Science. Application form submitted without the Research aptitude will not be considered in the selection for participation. DURATION OF THE COURSE: The duration of the course, as suggested above, will be of two weeks. Attendance is compulsory for all 14 days and no leave will be allowed during the course period. NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: The total number of participants should be in the 30 (20 Outstation and 10 Local). Since seats are limited, selection will be based on bio data and ICSSR guidelines for a course under a Special Component Plan for ST Government of India. Hence preference will be given to participants from ST category. Only shortlisted suitable candidates will be contacted. CRITERIA FOR THE SELECTION OF PARTICIPANTS: The course will be open to all faculty members of social science disciplines in research institutions, colleges and university postgraduate departments. Participants should have a minimum of a postgraduate degree. An applicant must show evidence of his research aptitude and he/she should submit his/her academic details in a pro-forma to be prescribed by the ICSSR including his academic plan to engage in research and publication after undertaking the course. A person engaged in teaching and research in rural areas will be preferred. Applicant belonging to ST category should be given preference. (a) 400-word write-up on the research and publication plan after the workshop, (b) 400-word write-up on any book/research report/article that he/she has read in the past year and (c) 200-word write-up on how research engagement will influence his teaching and engagement with the students.
Candidates having knowledge of basic statistics, Microsoft excel and SPSS will be preferred. Selected candidates would be informed through E-mail or Phone website (please mention clearly your phone number and email address) Further, it is desirable for all the selected participants to bring their own laptop for the hands-on practice sessions. REGISTRATION FEES: Registration fee for the participants is NIL TRAVEL ALLOWANCE AND ACCOMMODATION: Travel allowance by shortest distance (railway fares/actual bus fare) will be reimbursed to the outstation participants subject to production of tickets as per ICSSR guidelines/university Rules. Free of cost fooding will be provided to all participants while lodging will be provided only to outstation participants. ABOUT THE HOST INSTITUTION AND FACULTY OF COMMERCE ranks among the first few in the country in the field of academic and research output. The Faculty of Commerce, which happens to be one of the most renowned faculty of Banaras Hindu University, came into existence in the year 1940 as an adjunct to the Department of Economics, B.H.U. Ten years later (in 1950), it became an Independent Department and was elevated to the status of a Faculty, i.e., Faculty of Commerce in the year 1965 on the eve of the Golden Jubilee Celebration of the University. In 1968, upon the introduction of management courses in the University, the Faculty was renamed as Faculty of Commerce and Business Management. In 1976, two separate departments i.e. Department of Commerce and Deportment of Management Studies were created which subsequently became two separate Faculties, i.e., Faculty of Commerce and Faculty of Management Studies in 1984. The Faculty has produced many eminent alumni who are rendering today valuable services to the country as academicians, entrepreneur, executives and public servants.
