Academic Developments of Undergraduate Programmes The Faculty of Education offers two full-time professional undergraduate programmes in education, the B.Ed. (Language Education) Programme and the B.Ed. (Physical Education and Sports Science) Programme. The former prepares graduates to be teachers of Chinese or English while the latter prepares graduates to be Physical Education teachers, coaches, and sports management personnel. In view of the demand for quality subject trained teachers of languages, the annual intake of the B.Ed. (Language Education) Programme has increased from 36 to 46 since 2005. New Development In July 2005 the Chinese University of Hong Kong signed an agreement with the Hong Kong Institute of Education under which the two institutions would explore the possibility of a deep collaboration. The first venture is to launch a joint degree programme designed to prepare school teachers of English. Bachelor of Arts in English Studies and Education Programme This is a four-year full time undergraduate programme designed to nurture professional teachers of English with a strong foundation in English Language and Literature, as well as solid pedagogical knowledge and skills. The program includes courses on: English Language English Literature and Culture Educational Studies English Language Teaching Methodology English Language Proficiency General Education Other non-major subjects Students of the programme are to study the equivalent of two years in each institution, with a wide choice of courses thus capitalizing on the strengths of the two institutions. Courses taken at CUHK are to be offered mainly by the Faculty of Education and the Department of English. The first cohort of students will be admitted in September 2006 and the intake quota is 40. 6

40th Anniversary International Conference of the Faculty of Education The captioned conference was held on 2-3 December 2005. Under the joint efforts of the Hong Kong Institute of Educational Research and the Faculty of Education of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, CUHK School Heads Alumni Association, and CUHK Faculty of Education Alumni Association, it was organized to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Faculty of Education of CUHK. Professor Arthur K.C. Li, GBS, JP, Secretary for Education and Manpower, and Professor Lawrence J. Lau, Vice-chancellor of the CUHK, were invited to officiate at the opening ceremony of the conference. The theme of this conference was Developing Teacher Leadership and Education Partnership in the Face of Education Reform. Schools, with today s fast pace of changes, are encountering a sweeping educational reform, the aim of which is to prepare students to face the challenges of our rapidly changing world. There have been suggestions that the successful launch of these reform initiatives must lie in the development of powerful communities of teachers and the forging of partnership between schools and different sectors of society. This conference was aimed to bring scholars, researchers and practitioners together to exchange experiences and air their views on these issues, so that insightful ideas could be identified, explored, and developed. Five internationally acclaimed scholars, Professor Hu Rui-wen, President of the Shanghai Academy of Educational Science; Professor Hwang Jeng-jye, President of University of Tainan; Professor Christopher Day, Professor of the University of Nottingham; Professor Andy Hargeaves, Professor of Boston College, and Professor Leslie N.K. Lo, Director of the Hong Kong Institute of Educational Research, CUHK, were invited to deliver keynote speeches. Joining them were educators, researchers and practitioners from all over the world. There were more than a hundred papers presented at the conference, workshops and round-table sessions were also organized to allow for a diversity of expression. Issues explored fell under the following major sub-themes: Changing Roles of Teachers: curriculum leaders, inquirers and agents for educational change; Changes in the Development of Teachers as Professionals and Learners; Changing Approaches to Teacher Education and Teaching Practice; Teaching Profession as a Moral Enterprise in the Context of Reform; and Partnership Development between Stakeholders - education providers, government and the community. The discussions were both theoretical and practical in orientation which led to a symbiotic relationship between theory and practice. The conference was well attended by over 700 participants. A majority of the participants came from the tertiary education sector, while principals and school administrators made up the second largest group. There were over 80 overseas participants, who came as far as from the US, the UK, Australia, Nigeria, and Malaysia. This academic exchange effectively provided an opportunity for a synthesis of insights and ideas, which helped the teaching profession as a whole, to chart a safe passage in its future development. 9
