M ST ARTIN S SCHOOL

The students at St Martin s are very friendly and welcoming, right through from Year 7 to Year 13. Year 7 student Welcome

From the Headteacher Choosing the right secondary school for your son or daughter is an enormous decision and I hope that this prospectus will give you a flavour for why you should consider choosing St Martin s School. We were judged to be an outstanding provider of education and care during our OfSTED inspection in May 2013. Our academic record is very impressive. Students at the school attain very highly in public examinations and make exceptional progress given their starting points in Year 7. The vast majority of students choose to study beyond the age of sixteen and a higher proportion of our students than that found nationally choose to go to university, including those in the Russell Group. Students enjoy coming to St Martin s School because it is a safe and welcoming environment. They are well taught and they form excellent relationships with their teachers and their peers. The school is calm and orderly because behaviour is outstanding and based on the principles of Discipline with Dignity. I recommend that you come to our open evening and take advantage of the school tours that we offer in the mornings. With the information that you gather at these events and the information contained in this prospectus, I hope you will be well placed to be able to make a decision as to whether St Martin s School is the right choice for your son or daughter. Mike O Sullivan Headteacher

teaching and learning The quality of teaching was deemed to be outstanding when OfSTED inspected the school in May 2013. Amongst other things in the report the inspectors said, Teachers have very high expectations of all students and they respond well to the challenges posed. The report goes on, Teachers ask thought provoking questions that challenge students to consider alternative ideas and to make links with previous learning. The school is immensely proud of the professionalism of all its teachers. They plan interesting and exciting lessons that make sure all students, regardless of their ability, make rapid and sustained progress.

The quality of teaching is really good and teachers make learning fun and enjoyable. Year 8 student

beyond the classroom

There are numerous opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities including sports clubs, musical experiences and drama productions, the school offers rich learning opportunities. Ofsted May 2013 St Martin s School s extra-curricular programme is one of the most comprehensive of all the schools in Essex. Each year the PE department organises over 450 competitive matches against other schools both nationally and locally. School productions are always a spectacular success. They are a coming together of the expertise of the art, drama, music and technical support departments which impact significantly on the achievement of students in these subjects. Other extra-curricular activities range from revision sessions at all key stages to specialist clubs such as those run by the science and technology departments.

The support that all students receive is exceptional in its quality. The first point of contact is the form tutor who will get to know their tutees very well and help to iron out any problems as they might arise during their time at school. Each year is led by a head of year who has a full time assistant, called a year administrator, who can answer queries from parents and students when the head of year is teaching. A director of key stage oversees the academic progress and ensures that students who are underachieving are identified early so that intervention strategies can be put in place quickly. Students receive guidance and care when they need it at key times during their secondary school careers. For example, during the transition from primary school and when they choose their option in Year 9. They will also be given advice at appropriate times on important topics including cyber-bullying, sex education and keeping themselves safe. As a result of the support that students receive they are able to become citizens who make an extremely positive contribution to their local community

I think the school has very high standards in many areas, including quality of teaching as well as discipline and care. Year 9 student student support

St Martin s School is proud of the strength of community spirit in the school. The collection of people who make up that community: students, teachers, support staff, parents, carers, governors and local organisations such as sporting clubs and societies that use the school s facilities outside of normal school hours make a contribution to its values and ethos. The school nurtures this spirit and people who visit the school remark at how evident it is in the warm working relationships between all who work and learn everyday on the school s site.

Students spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is further enhanced by strong partnerships with schools in other countries and encouragement to undertake positions of responsibility. Ofsted May 2013 community
