Fast ForWord Program Yorkwoods Public School, the first school in Ontario to introduce the Fast ForWord program, has successfully encouraged other schools to begin the program in their classrooms. Forty-nine kindergarten to grade 5 students are now actively involved in the program. Fast ForWord participants who showed gains improved their reading level by an average of 15 months in a 4 month period. With its focus on listening accuracy, phonological awareness and structures, students continue to make excellent progress. Teacher and parental comments have been most favourable. Yorkwoods Public School is located in the northwest part of the Toronto District School Board. We serve the educational needs of a vibrant and diverse community. The school was built in the late 1960s and has undergone extensive interior and exterior restoration. The school serves 410 students representing more than 25 different languages. Though the majority of our students were born in Canada, our school is further enriched by the presence of students born in 37 other countries. Model Schools for Inner Cities Yorkwoods Public School continues to be involved in the Model School Initiative. We practise the 5 essential components involved: 1. More Information about Yorkwoods Public School Arts Program We have an exciting Arts Program here that encourages our students to enjoy and experiment with the visual arts. The students have produced a dynamic, award winning egg shell mosaic on Peace that is housed in our front foyer. Another great mural was just completed. Students are exposed to various art techniques and different media, including oil painting and pastel. Special Education Prorgrams We have 2 self-contained special education programs in our school. They are the Primary Learning Disabilities programs and the Primary Behaviour program. We have a KELI program for the kindergarten students. We also offer a Reading Recovery program and the Home School / Resource program to meet the needs of those students who require additional support. Parent Room We are excited about opening a Parent Room for all of our families. In this room, parents will be able to use Word Processing programs to do resumes, letters, etc. Workshops and interest groups will be held on a regular basis on topics selected by our parents. Special parent/child books will be available for borrowing/reading with their child during school time. Professional Staff Yorkwoods Public School takes pride in the staff that work here. The first one depicts Peace and represents many different cultures working together to achieve this. On the opposite wall is another mural depicting different animals living together in their calm environment. These themes of peace are felt throughout the entire school as students, parents, staff and community support personnel work together for our students.
