International Summer School Juniors: 8-12 Years Seniors: 13-16 Years

An elite International Summer School for INDIVIDUALS in the most iconic part of England 02 SEDBERGH SCHOOL

Welcome from the Headmaster I would like to extend a warm Sedberghian welcome to international students from all over the world looking for a rewarding summer school experience. Established in 1525, Sedbergh School is one of only a few full boarding schools in the UK. Ours is a traditional British boarding school that has maintained the best of British boarding school traditions whilst constantly introducing innovative ideas and new ways of teaching. Our unique International Summer School, held at our Prep School campus in the nearby village of Casterton, is an excellent example of this. Owned and operated by Sedbergh School s own staff, it provides a complete British boarding school experience where students learn English from the finest teachers and, outside the classroom, enjoy an impressive range of sports, excursions and exciting activities. Now in its eighth year, the summer school is small and friendly. The beautiful surrounding area provides a stunning location and a very safe environment for an exciting learning experience. We very much look forward to welcoming you to Sedbergh School next summer! Andrew Fleck BSc, MA (Nottingham) HEADMASTER SEDBERGH SCHOOL 03

English lessons Our programme provides 22 hours of English lessons each week for which students are divided by age into Juniors (8 12 year olds) and Seniors (13 16 year olds). Our well-qualified and very experienced teachers use a wide variety of traditional and modern teaching methods to provide the best tuition and to promote understanding of the English language. Students undertake a placement test on arrival and are allocated to the most appropriate class for their ability. Once the students have been placed into their classes they study English through different weekly themes and learning takes place both inside and outside the classroom. This not only promotes the learning of grammar but speaking, listening and reading as well as general English comprehension whilst giving students exposure to British culture. Examples of how English is taught outside of the classroom: English in the Community (8-12 Years old) This provides a unique opportunity for younger students to experience life in rural England. They take part in fun, practical projects during which they can practise their spoken and written English in the local community during visits to Kirkby Lonsdale and surrounding villages. Active Communication (13-16 Years old) This is a chance for older students to hear different accents and learn English in a new context. It s a fast-paced and fun activity where students experience many ways of learning. I have a super teacher and the lessons are really good and funny DANIIL from Russia 06 SEDBERGH SCHOOL

Leadership Two of the core values of a British boarding school are leadership and team work. Two afternoons a week are dedicated to developing these skills in students. This time provides a further opportunity to improve their English outside the classroom in a comfortable environment which nurtures their talents and develops their confidence. The activities are challenging yet fun and are intended to develop the students communication, teamwork and negotiation skills both individually and as part of a team. Leadership activities include a variety of indoor and outdoor activities, such as cookery, film making, drama and singing. Our Masterchef cooking activity is one of our favourite activities! Students manage all aspects of the activity from the planning and cooking stages to the final showcasing of their meals, and the best parts of the activity: the judging and the final tasting! Individual Student Reports Throughout the course teachers monitor each student s progress and offer individual assistance. Every student will receive a full academic report and certificate at the end of the course. This contains their teacher s recommendations on how to continue improving their English once they return home along with comments from their Housemaster or Housemistress and the Course Director. I am very thankful to Sedbergh ISS. I have learnt to speak a lot more English which means I feel a lot more confident conversing in English. Thank you for the amazing time! ISABELLA from Germany SEDBERGH SCHOOL 09

Sports & Activities Students enjoy a wide range of exciting sports and activities and are encouraged to try as many new ones as possible. The students are offered a choice of five to six sports or activities each day ensuring that they have the option to experience a new activity each day. During the course students can choose from: ART & CRAFT BADMINTON BALL GAMES BASKETBALL BOARD GAMES CHESS CLUB CLIMBING WALL DANCE DODGEBALL FOOTBALL GOLF HILL-WALKING HORSE RIDING MUSIC RUGBY SAILING SQUASH SWIMMING TENNIS VOLLEYBALL ZORBING The activities were really good, and the staff were very funny. My favourite part was the day trip and relaxing in the House in the evenings HUGO from France 10 SEDBERGH SCHOOL

Excursions We have an exciting programme of cultural activities, including a full day excursion every Monday and Wednesday. These experiences are linked into the weekly theme and English lessons to give students a greater insight into British culture. The excursions broaden the students cultural, historical and geographical understanding of the United Kingdom while giving them the opportunity to visit cities which offer world-class sport, heritage, architecture, fashion, style and art. On previous courses we have visited iconic cities such as Manchester, Newcastle, Liverpool and Edinburgh, where students have visited art galleries, museums and football grounds, as well as shopped til they have dropped! Wednesday excursions take advantage of the School s excellent location and include activities such as sailing, canoeing and high ropes. SEDBERGH SCHOOL 11

Entertainment After a day of lessons, it s time to continue the fun with an evening dedicated to entertainment. This gives students a chance to build many friendships, try out their new English speaking skills and take some time to relax. Typical evening entertainment activities include: DISCOS GAMES NIGHTS FASHION SHOWS KARAOKE MOVIE NIGHTS CAMPFIRES TRADITIONAL GAMES BARBECUES QUIZZES KARAOKE MOVIE NIGHTS TALENT SHOWS The end of each week is celebrated with a presentation ceremony followed by a party where students and staff can socialise and enjoy themselves. Weekly Presentation Ceremony The end of each week is celebrated with a presentation ceremony which celebrates the students academic achievements. Upon departure, each student is presented with a certificate which commends hard work, effort and improved skills. This is followed by a party where students and staff socialise, show off their dancing skills and their party tricks! Water Wars was my favourite activity! I got very very wet and it was really good TOM from China 14 SEDBERGH SCHOOL

Accommodation & Pastoral Care Sedbergh International Summer School is well regarded for its superior level of pastoral care. We take the view that everyone performs best when they feel cared for, confident and relaxed; therefore we make sure our pastoral care is second to none, and have established a successful House system to foster a caring environment. Students live in comfortable Boarding Houses; boys and girls in separate houses. Each House is looked after by an experienced Housemaster or Housemistress and Matron, which creates a happy and supportive family style environment and means that our students are cared for 24 hours a day. Students live in mixed nationality rooms, normally of two to four beds. Each House is well equipped, with its own common room, games room, Wi-Fi and Sky TV. Students are encouraged to maintain regular contact with their families at home using the communal computers. Birthdays All students will be spoilt on their birthdays if it occurs during the Summer School. The Chef will bake a special cake, and we ll all sing to the birthday girl or boy and make it a memorable day! SEDBERGH SCHOOL 17

Food The School is proud of its excellent catering staff and dining facilities and a full and varied menu of international style food is provided. For lunch and dinner, there is a choice of hot dishes including a vegetarian option. A salad bar is provided at lunch and dinner, and fresh fruit is available at every meal. Boys and girls come together for meals. Lunches are formal and each week students are allocated to a mixed nationality table where they sit with a staff member. This helps all students, regardless of age and nationality, to make friends and encourages them to speak in English. At Chocolate Time, just before bed, students come together over hot chocolate and a snack for a chat about the day s events. In addition to being an important social point of the day, this also allows staff to check the wellbeing of each student. The food is delicious! The common room is very nice, pretty and clean, I loved hanging out there with my friends in the evening YU from Japan 20 SEDBERGH SCHOOL
