Development of MoreSports, an award winning community development project with the mission to create sustainable community sport programs so that all children and youth, regardless of social or economic background, have an opportunity to develop fundamental life skills and a love of sport. Act as general manager of the program. 1. Developed working relationships with all of the various organizational partners in the public and private sectors, including the Vancouver School Board, the Vancouver Parks Board, Number Community Associations and Centres, and private program delivery partners. 2. Lead / developed all staff and volunteers. 3. Managed the implementation of all operational programs.
4. Found new partners and new external funding sources to allow the expansion of the strategy to new neighborhoods. 5. Managed the finances of the organization MoreSports grew from 3 inner city neighborhoods with 400 participating children a year to 7 community hubs in East Vancouver running over 250 sport programs in 26 different sports, involving almost 8000 children per year - a more than 20 fold increase in 6 years. As part of this growth, lead the development of YELL (Youth Engage Learn Lead), a unique youth leadership program which addressed the major impediment to MoreSports growth, a lack of trained youth leaders. YELL trains over 1000 new youths per year to be volunteer leaders and coaches in MoreSports and other programs. YELL works in partnership with various Provincial Sport Organizations and the BC Recreation and Parks Association to provide courses in the National Coaching Certification Program, High 5 & other training curricula at the schools youth attend. Executive Director British Columbia Rugby Union (BCRU) 1995 to 2004 General Manager and CEO of the organization, responsible for all aspects of the organization: 1. leading staff and volunteers, 2. yearly and long term planning, 3. financial management, 4. program implementation, 5. coach and player development, 6. special events coordination and management, 7. media relations, 8. member communications and publications. Maintained productive working relationships with the sports media, the Provincial Government Sport Services Branch, the Gaming Commission of BC, other Provincial Sport Organizations and Multi Sport Organizations, Sport BC, Rugby Canada (the National Sport Governing Organization) and all commercial organizations with relationships to the BCRU. Created, executed and maintained a new, long-range vision for growth of rugby in BC from 1997 to 2004 that shifted the culture and attitude of the organization from primarily adult recreational play to a focus on youth development in the community club system.
BCRU grew significantly from two staff and gross revenues of less than $350K in 1995, to three full-time staff and six part -time Regional Coach/Youth Development Officers, and gross annual revenues exceeding $800K in 2004. The youth membership grew from less than 600 players in 1995 to 15 different tiers with over 2,500 players ranging from ages 5 to 19. A new program of club based Mini-Rugby programs had over 1,000 children playing. A new woman s age-grade leagues involved 12 clubs and over 400 teenage girls. The elite programs grew from two BC Rep Teams and 60 players to seven teams under volunteer management with 210 athletes attending National Championships.
