The Toreador Times provides updates on weekly school activities and events. If you have questions or recommendations for information to be included, please contact the Central Office at 515-433-0750. May 26th, 2017. A YEAR TO REMEMBER Boone Community School District, you have done it again! The 2016-2017 school year will surely be one to remember. As this successful year draws to an end, it is incredible to reflect on all that has been achieved at each building, at each grade level, and in all areas of the district in just one year. Success was redefined this year as people Expected the BEST, Achieved SUCCESS. Success ranged from academic, to sporting, to creative arts, and to the numerous fun and fundraising adventures within the Boone Community School District. This year was successful because the district as a whole worked well together to give their best to achieve success. Everyone in the district showcased why at the Boone Community School District we Expect the BEST, Achieve SUCCESS. This is the Toreador Way. Reflecting on the year, a top 10 list was developed to give a run down of our incredible 2016-2017 school year. There were so many highlights, it was hard to narrow down to just 10. Here is what we believe some top 10 highlights of the 2016-2017 school year are. Drum roll, please.. Enjoy! HOPE FESTIVAL This year s Hope Festival was another huge success. Proceeds from donations, the silent auction, the cafe, and the boutique brought in $24,425 at this year s festival. The impact that the Hope Foundation has in our community is incredible and to have the support it does is even more amazing. HOMECOMING This year s BHS homecoming was an exciting time filled with school spirit for all those involved. Elementary students had special pep rallies to get them even more pumped up for the week s festivities! Fall athletes and band members came together to show the elementary students what Homecoming was really about, school spirit! THE WIZARD OF OZ The Wizard of Oz came to Boone High School! The Boone High theatre students put on a great performance of The Wizard of Oz that pulled in huge crowds of all ages. The musical was a hit and continued getting praises throughout the year with many awards from across the state. HOLIDAY CONCERTS Every year the elementary students work very hard to prepare for the annual holiday concerts to showcase their talents to families. The students did a wonderful job on mastering songs for this year s holiday concerts. A special guest appearance from Santa was a highlight of the night!

MEET VicTOR STEM BEST GRANT Boone Community School District was granted the STEM BEST Grant this year. With the support of the STEM BEST Grant, Boone High School is the third high school in Iowa to begin offering pre-apprenticeship programs in 2017-18. STATE APPEARANCES In April the Boone Community School District welcomed our new Toreador mascot, VicTOR. VicTOR has been popping up at many different events at the end of the year. Keep an eye out for him this summer and next fall! COLOR RUN FUN Franklin Elementary held their 2nd annual Color Run. The Color Run was a great success and has become a great year end event many kids, parents, and community members look forward to. Throughout the year, we kept seeing one thing pop up STATE appearances in multiple activities. To say BCSD had a successful year in athletics and fine arts is an understatement. Student after student kept finding themselves in positions to move forward to our state's top stage at the STATE competitions. Expect the BEST, Achieve SUCCESS. The Toreador Way. MIDDLE SCHOOL CHALLENGE.. ACCEPTED This year we saw middle school students working extremely hard to conquer challenges that were set by staff at the middle school. The challenge that was accepted and conquered was the 5000 book challenge. Middle school students dominated this challenge and got the opportunity to SLIME Principal Kelley and Mr. Hoover. This week we saw another book challenge that was accepted and conquered as Principal Kelley and Mr. Hoover slept in a tent on top of the Middle School to show their support for their students hard work this year! With 1,105 votes submitted by the school community, our new motto best describing The Toreador Way is "Expect the BEST. Achieve SUCCESS." The idea behind the motto and mascot is both to recognize our focus as educators and appreciate our enthusiasm for being a Toreador. The BCSD motto holds us to a high level of accountability as teachers, staff, students, parents, and community.

Kate will be the state of Iowa's representative. Her selection to this program requires her to plan and implement a service project honoring a hero in her community. Kate has developed a "Boone County Backs the Blue" service project to honor current and retired area law enforcement officers on Tuesday, June 14th, during the Boone High School vs Ogden High School baseball game. All officers and their immediate families are invited to attend the game free of charge with their police ID. Officers will be honored on the field prior to the varsity game beginning around 7:15 with the game to follow. In addition to honoring county law enforcement for this service project, Kate is raising money for the Iowa C.O.P.S. organization that helps support families of fallen officers. Attached you will find a link to order shirts to support Boone County Backs the Blue with proceeds from the shirt going to Iowa C.O.P.S. The Boone vs Ogden baseball game is an in-county rivalry game that is historically well attended. We believe that honoring our law enforcement officers that night will bring even more people to the ballpark, bringing our communities together in a family-friendly environment. We hope to see a great turnout from all of Boone County to come together for a great event and an even greater cause! DIGITAL BACKPACK https://boone.k12.ia.us/new/index.ph p/district/notices/digital-backpack/ The BCSD utilizes a Digital Backpack online to inform and distribute information to parents on school sponsored activities, non-profit organizations and community events throughout the year!
