ISB Photo Calendar As you will remember, we are planning to produce a Photo Calendar for 2018 which we will be selling in December before the winter break - an ideal present for families and friends! Due to the long summer break, we are looking for photographs depicting the summer months June, July and August. If you have taken any good quality photographs that you would like to share with others, please send them to ddodds@isbremen.de. For each month, one image will be chosen and their photographer will receive a small prize from us on compiling the calendar. We look forward to receiving some wonderful summer memories! New Choir Starting in September! You love to sing in a group with other music enthusiasts - contemporary gospel, a little pop music, a little classical? Meet Our CAS Students... Malin, Grade 12 Hello, my name is Malin Bock and my Service for CAS is planting vegetables. I started this Service about four months ago and the purpose of it, despite CAS, is to donate the vegetables that I am planting to the Bremen Tafel. I plant a wide range of vegetables, such as carrots, tomatoes etc. I have placed them on my balcony and always check and water them whenever they need it. Not only is this going to be a great contribution to the Bremen Tafel, but it also makes me very happy as it is some time I spend alone doing something I enjoy. Then come and join us on 18 September 2017 for the kick-off of the ISB Choir under the direction of Janine Smith. Everyone is welcome (students from Grade 6 upwards, parents and staff). All voices are needed. No experience is necessary to sing. Participation is free of charge. The choir will meet every Monday from 3.15-4.30pm in the Malcolm Davis Hall. Bring water or tea with you to protect your voice, and an open mind to be filled with song! CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=374782 1 September 2017 Parent Bulletin 3

IMYC Entry Point Grade 6 took part in their first-ever Entry Point on Monday, 28 August, by visiting the Auswandererhaus in Bremerhaven accompanied by Mrs Rachel Wolff and Mr Andrew Roberts. Their theme of Discovery was discussed in relation to the migration from the port which was built in 1852. Students visited the museum and completed a number of investigations related to the information within the exhibits. All in all, it was a fun and successful trip and really allowed the students to think in more depth about their first Big Idea: Finding out new things is a human driver and affects things for better or worse. Throughout the next six weeks, Grade 6 students will delve into this idea in more depth within the context of each subject. Library News Reminder to Grade 6-10 Students Mrs Holsten would like to remind students to return their Academic Honesty Policy Declaration document, duly signed by their parents. Students received this document on Wednesday, 23 August 2107 as part of their Library Orientation. Thank you. Students in Grade 7 took part in their Entry Point for the theme of Resilience : Success over time requires persistence. They thought about how resilient they were when faced with challenges and took part in a hands-on activity, attempting (in most cases successfully!) to create origami butterflies. Grade 8 s Entry Point was run by the Maths department. Their Big Idea of Identity : Our sense of self, and that of others, is continually developing through our different interactions, and impacts on how we exist in the world, was explored through the context of Fairtrade. Mr Markus Neumann German Mr Neumann was born and raised near Stuttgart, among vineyards. He acquired his first foreign language (Schwäbisch) there on the football pitch, right after school, and from an ancient neighbour. Markus studied Deutsche Philologie and Anglistik, Philosophy and Media at the University of Göttingen, became a teacher of German at the University of Illinois (Urbana Champaign) and joined the ISB in 2003, after completing his Ph.D. thesis ( Die englische Komponente [ ] im Werk Rudolf Borchardts. ). At the interview, the then Director was suffering from a nasty cold, while Markus, who had only planned to stay for a couple of months, was hardly aware of the adventures to come by assisting a young school to grow. He is still excited about being a part of this project. Privately, Markus enjoys explorations of various kinds, in the good company, particularly, of his two daughters, and likes to read poems such as Gottfried Benn s Was schlimm ist : Sehr schlimm: eingeladen sein, Wenn zu Hause die Räume stiller, der Café besser und keine Unterhaltung nötig ist.
