Explanatory notes Results are shown for mainstream secondary schools in membership of the Scottish Council of Independent Schools (SCIS). This table has been compiled using data provided by each school. Examinations in Scottish schools Scotland has its own exam system, administered by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). Pupils study for National Qualifications at Higher and Advanced Higher levels. Several independent schools also offer GCSEs and A Levels, either as an alternative to or in addition to the Scottish examinations. A small number of schools now offer the International Baccalaureate and the Scottish Baccalaureate. Age and Stage Broadly, the Scottish and English systems are structured as follows: Scottish English Age Year year group year group 17/18 years 13 Secondary 6 Upper Sixth 16/17 years 12 Secondary 5 Lower Sixth 15/16 years 11 Secondary 4 Fifth Form 14/15 years 10 Secondary 3 Fourth Form National 5 exams are usually taken in Secondary 4 in Scotland (the parallel being GCSE in the Fifth Form in England). Higher exams are generally taken in Secondary 5, but can also be taken in Secondary 6. After Highers, pupils can go on to take Advanced Highers, usually in Secondary 6. Each qualification has a separate grading structure, as shown within the table. The bands used for the International Baccalaureate (a points based qualification) are broadly equivalent to the other qualifications. Diversity of choice The schools are listed here in alphabetical order. Because of the different systems, the diversity within the Scottish system and the availability of both systems in some schools, it is not possible to devise a points formula equivalent to that used for schools operating purely the GCSE/ A Level system. Examination results in Scotland also differ from school to school because of the diversity of choice between the two systems and indeed within the English and Scottish exams systems themselves. Each school may have a different presentation policy on entering pupils for exams at different stages. Parents are encouraged to contact individual schools for further information.
