Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI) Data Science and Information Technology Master s Program Design Revised in June, 2016 I. Applicable to the Following Disciplines: Data Science and Information Technology (Code 99J3) TBSI Master s Program in Data Science and Information Technology, cultivating outstanding and internationally minded talents for interdisciplinary research, is applicable to the following program categories: computer and information science, electronics and information technology, mechanical engineering (including instrumentation), social and human sciences, etc. II. Cultivation Objectives On completion of coursework and research practice, students will obtain extensive knowledge, professional qualifications and strong skills relating to Data Science and Information Technology. Students will develop their abilities to carry out innovative work in intelligent sensor, information devices, information processing, network processing, data science, human-computer interaction, etc. The Program is committed to provide the solution of regional and global challenges with highly qualified professionals, as prospective entrepreneurs and future leaders for global technology and engineering, who are capable of the creation of high-tech enterprises and the management of global industry. III. Length of Schooling & Degrees The Program adopts full-time cultivation model, and locations will be in Shenzhen, China and Berkeley, California, USA. Length of schooling will be 2-3 years, not exceeding the maximum length predetermined by the regulations of Tsinghua University on Master s programs. Students may obtain their degree(s) in either of the following two ways. 1. Students may complete their study throughout the program at Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute in Shenzhen and receive a Master s degree in Data Science and Information Technology at Tsinghua University in fulfillment of degree-granting
requirements. 2. Students may spend their first academic year at TBSI, second academic year (9 months) at University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley), and then third academic year back to TBSI to complete the program. Students may receive dual Master s degrees from both Tsinghua University and UC Berkeley if they have completed program study and meet all the degree-granting requirements for both Universities. IV. Education Mode Data Science and Information Technology Master s Program adopts an education mode that emphasizes the integration of interdisciplinary research and innovation practice. Students will be under the guidance of co-advisors. Program sectors mainly include: Foundation Courses, Specialized Courses, Engineering Leadership, Research on Specialized Topics, Corporate Practice, Thesis, etc. V. Credit Requirements Full-time students enrolled in the Data Science and Information Technology Master s Program is required to take a minimum of 24 units of coursework. Details as follows: 1. Compulsory Common Courses (5 Units) 2. Compulsory Specialty Courses (a minimum of 15 Units) 3. Academic & Professional Development Courses (a minimum of 1 Unit) 4. Compulsory Session (3 Units) Full-time students enrolled in the Data Science and Information Technology Master s Program may apply for the Master of Engineering Program at UC Berkeley. Upon enrollment to the Master of Engineering Program at UC Berkeley and fulfillment of its credit requirements, dual degree program participants may apply for a Master s degree of Engineering from UC Berkeley. Admission to the UC Berkeley Masters of Engineering program is not guaranteed, but students seeking the Dual Degree are invited to apply. VI. Transfer of Credit Units Upon approval of the Master s Program of UC Berkeley College of Engineering, Tsinghua University will allow the transfer of Berkeley graduate-level courses, up to a total of four (4) credit units. Upon approval of Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute, UC Berkeley will allow the transfer of Tsinghua graduate-level courses, up to a total of three (3) credit units.

Thesis Practicality, interdisciplinary approach, and innovation shall be emphasized in Master s thesis. Students are encouraged to complete their thesis based on interdisciplinary and innovative practice project. The author s research work and academic level shall be accurately reflected in the thesis which demonstrates his/her expertise on related interdisciplinary areas and ability to conduct independent academic research project and practice. Completion of thesis proposal and thesis are required according to university regulations. Thesis defense will be evaluated by a defense committee consists of internal and external experts. Students will be provided with guidance on their thesis by TBSI Academic Advisory Committee. Students at the Data Science and Information Technology Master s Program may obtain their degree(s) in one of the following two ways: Single Degree and Dual Degree. Single Degree: Students enrolled in TBSI must fulfill degree credit requirements by completion of coursework such as Foundation Courses, Specialized Courses, Engineering Leadership, Research on Specialized Topics, Corporate Practice and thesis. The thesis
shall be reviewed by advisor(s) and then submitted for defense. A Defense Committee designated by TBSI Academic Advisory Committee will chair a thesis defense for Master s Program, carry out evaluation and decide on degree granting in their sole discretion. Students who pass the thesis defense organized by TBSI, upon approval of the Degree Committee of Tsinghua University, will be awarded a Master s Degree at Tsinghua University in Data Science and Information Technology. Dual Degree: Students enrolled in both TBSI and UC Berkeley must fulfill degree credit requirements of both universities by completion of coursework such as Foundation Courses, Specialized Courses, Engineering Leadership, Research on Specialized Topics, Corporate Practice and thesis. The thesis shall be reviewed by advisor(s) and then submitted for defense. A Defense Committee designated by TBSI Academic Advisory Committee will chair a thesis defense for Master s Program, carry out evaluation and decide on degree granting in their sole discretion.
