August 15, 2016 Dear Parents, Hello and Welcome Back from the Physical Education Department. We hope you had a great summer. We look forward to an active, healthy and productive school year. The goal of our Physical Education Program is to promote a positive learning experience, maximizing student participation in all activities, and creating an environment for each child to have the opportunity to be successful. Our program focuses on fostering a safe, supportive and non competitive environment where personal development and fitness awareness are emphasized during all lessons. Our students will participate in a variety of sports and activities throughout the year. Our gymnasium will be the central location of our activities, in addition to our school field. The goal is to keep our students as physically active as possible during class time while developing the skills, knowledge and confidence to become and remain physically active for a lifetime. By sharing some of our goals and philosophy with you, it is our hope that you will have a better understanding of what we are trying to accomplish in our physical education department. PHYSICAL EDUCATION MISSION STATEMENT All students will understand and appreciate the necessity for developing and maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle. DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW The primary goal of Vahan & Anoush Chamlian Physical Education Department is designed to help train each student in personal fitness and skillful movements, while teaching the state standards. Student will be placed in a positive learning environment where they will be given every opportunity to develop learning experiences geared to improving performance in motor and fitness activities. CLASS EXPECTATIONS Students are expected to: Be dressed out and ready to participate in class EVERYDAY! Participate to the best of their ability. Keep all comments and actions POSITIVE! Students must line up near the gymnasium door, away from the door. Use appropriate language at all times. Take care of P.E. equipment, please don t leave school uniform in bathrooms. Report all accidents to the teacher immediately. Bring a note from a doctor if he/she must be excused for P.E. PHYSICAL EDUCATION CONTENT STANDARDS FOR GRADES 1 st 8 TH Standard 1: Students demonstrate the motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. Standard 2: Students demonstrate knowledge of movement concepts, principles, and strategies that apply to the learning and performance of physical activities. Standard 3: Students assess and maintain a level of physical fitness to improve health and performance. Standard 4: Students participate regularly in physical activity.
GRADING POLICY Grades are based on the following criteria: PARTICIPATION: Attendance and actual participation in physical activities. FUNCTIONAL UNDERSTANDING: Ability to reconstruct and demonstrate specific skills in required context. PHYSICAL FITNESS: Sets and works towards physical fitness test goals. CITIZENSHIP: Appropriate interaction with classmates and teacher. COOPERATION: Time on task, personal choices, and preparation (uniforms and folders). Grading Scale: Letter grades are given as: Excellent Above Average Average Below Average A+ = 97 100 B+ = 87 89 C+ = 77 79 D+ = 67 69 A = 94 96 B = 84 86 C =74 76 D = 64 66 A = 90 93 B = 80 83 C =70 73 D = 60 63 CODE OF CONDUCT TIGERS TRAITS: Chamlian Athletic Department emphasizes the importance of good character, sportsmanship and citizenship. DRESS OUT POLICY Students are required to dress out for Physical Education Everyday. Students will have 5 minutes before and after class to dress. Students are responsible for keeping the bathroom neat and orderly. Food, drinks, and breakable containers are not allowed in the bathrooms. Students are expected to be in the gymnasium before the tardy bell rings. When the tardy bell rings, students will be permitted to enter the bathrooms for changing. All students are expected to use bathrooms for changing purposes. Students have 5 minutes to change clothing and report to their attendance area. Required P.E.
