NATIONAL WORKSHOP ON EMERGING ISSUES IN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS AT GALGOTIAS UNIVERSITY, CAMPUS I SATURDAY, 9 TH DECEMBER 2017 Organised By Centre for Intellectual Property Right Studies School of Law Galgotias University In Association With

CONCEPT NOTE A National Workshop on Emerging Issues in Intellectual Property Rights is being organized by Centre for IPR studies, School of Law, Galgotias University. The workshop will highlight the overview and the relevance of IPR in academics as well as practical fields and will also deal with emerging issues in IPR specifically in relation to Entertainment Industries & Online Piracy, Trademark issues in Cyber Space and Technology Transfer & Patents. Intellectual Property (IP) contributes enormously to our national and state economies. Dozens of industries across our economy rely on the adequate enforcement of their patents, trademark and copyrights. Hence, Intellectual Property Rights are legally recognized exclusive rights to protect creations of the mind. These rights are outlined in Article 27 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which provides for the right to benefit from the protection of moral and material interests resulting from authorship of scientific, literary or artistic productions. The importance of intellectual property was first recognized in the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property (1883) and the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works (1886). Both treaties are administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The network of computers called the internet, which had a modest beginning, has grown by leaps and bounds. The growth of the internet has been explosive; the number of internet has increased tremendously since its introduction. Due to which the crime rate is booming with double alacrity and thus to protect the interest of the millions of potential victims the protective laws have been made in the country and interestingly the redressal of complaint is quick and cheaper. The entertainment industry has been battling piracy for decades. They have won strong data and intellectual property protection laws, taken down some of the biggest violators in the world, and removed billions of URLs from search engines that led to pirated content, but piracy remains the industry s biggest problem. Trademarks promote initiative and enterprises worldwide by rewarding their owners with recognition and financial profit. Trademark protection also hinders the efforts of unfair competitors, such as counterfeiters, to use similar distinctive signs to market inferior or different products or services. The system enables people with skill and enterprise to produce and market goods and services in the fairest possible conditions, thereby facilitating international trade. Yet, there are issues that still exists concerning the domain names, such as

cybersquatting (the use of domain names to make profit off a trademark belonging to someone else or registering a domain name of a famous company or a celebrity and then selling it at a inflated price), followed by linking and Typosqautting. Hence the workshop will usher discussion on these issues and would endeavor solutions to these problems.
