The completion of the first month of a new school year generally brings with it a satisfying relief that life within the school has settled comfortably into a productive routine. The hype and anxiety that is often attached to the return to school is now a distant memory, and students should now be more certain of new expectations, which are often encountered with new teachers and a changed learning environment. It is important that as parents you remain recognisably supportive, particularly in these weeks, as students settle into these new routines and accustom themselves with different expectations and teaching styles which may vary from teacher to teacher, class to class. A positive working partnership between home and school is absolutely vital in ensuring that a shared sense of responsibility is geared towards always maintaining what is best for each and every child. During the year, there will be many opportunities for you as parents to become involved in our school community. Here are some ideas.assisting with change of readers, at swimming and in the tuckshop, assisting with lunchtime clubs, attending school assemblies, and much more. Support the culture and what our school is trying to achieve, support your child s teacher, become an advocate for the school throughout the wider community, attend school activities such as sports events, concerts, Masses, etc., and most importantly consult regularly with your child s teacher about practical ways in which you can assist both at home and at school. Children just love seeing their parents being present and involved and, as I am learning as a parent of three boys, their years at primary school will go by in a blink of an eye.so, get in and enjoy the little things because one day you will look back and realise that they were the big things. It is true it s the little things in life that matter. What makes us remember things is how we felt at a particular time. If children have a positive and enjoyable experience at primary school, the odds are that they will carry this forward to secondary school and then one day hopefully provide their children with a positive attitude towards school. Children will remember how the important adults treated them; how they listened to what they had to say; how they established clear rules and boundaries; how they were fair but firm; how they knew how to have fun together and with us; how they modelled respect

Prayer Dear Lord, Please help me to rest in your happiness, To allow a smile to linger on my lips, To dwell within a wonderful memory, To walk back through sunlit places. Final Day of Term 1 Friday March 31 2.25pm Finish LATE ARRIVAL AND LEAVING EARLY FROM SCHOOL Just a reminder to sign your child in/ out at the school office prior to collecting them from and returning them to class. ALL VISITORS All visitors are reminded to sign in and out at the school office and collect a visitors pass prior to entering and exiting the school School Closure Day Friday March 10 Our Term 1 School Closure Day will be held Friday March 10 to provide an opportunity for staff to focus on Religious Education. St Joseph s Schoolbag App Get St Joseph s Skoolbag School iphone App to help us communicate more effectively with our Parent/Student Community. We are asking for as many Parents/Students as possible. Look for St Joseph s School Wonthaggi in your App Store and install it on your Apple iphone phone. The Android version is available at the Google Play Store. to one another; how our parents and teachers praised us for our efforts rather than our results. And if parents and teachers don t do these things, then, they ll remember that instead. There is no doubt that we as parents and teachers are a very important influence on the degree to which our children will have a healthy self-image. The memories we give our children to take forward in their lives, will be based, in great part, on the type of influence we provide. Sacrament of Confirmation Last weekend a number of our Year 6 students were presented to the Parish community during Presentation Masses as they took another step in their journey towards receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation on April 29. I ask that you keep these children in your prayers as they prepare to undertake the next significant step in their faith journey. School Closure Day - Friday, 10 March Just a reminder to all families that this Friday, 10 March is a School Closure Day for students at St Joseph s and therefore there is no Assembly this week. Multi Purpose Synthetic Sports field An exciting new addition to our outdoor play space is set to be constructed in the coming month. A multi-purpose synthetic sport field is planned for the area east of the Parish Hall. It will include line markings for a number of sports, providing greater opportunity for our students to experience these on a high-quality surface. It will also provide other opportunities for our school to host events, a great benefit to our community. Enjoy the fortnight ahead. Yours in Catholic Education Ronan O Mahony Principal Our Lenten Garden Quote for the Week: Peace is not something you must hope for in the future. It is a deepening of the present, and unless you look for it in the present, you will never find it. Thomas Merton During this time of Lent we are encouraging all students to donate to CARITAS and place a flower in our Lenten Garden. It s that season when we take stock of the garden of our lives. Just as the gardens that we plant outside need attention and planning and pruning, so do our souls. Caritas is our charity for Term 1. An international aid and development organisation Caritas Australia work with the poorest of the poor and help people help themselves.

Visual Arts This week, the senior students have been exploring how to paint without brushes. They were asked to make marks with various parts of their hands and to use cardboard and sticks as well. Using these skills, they were then asked to create a portrait. Some students found this to be quite challenging, however most were able to go with the picture, allowing it to evolve and with fabulous results. The Junior students have been working with paper, exploring ways we can cut and fold it to create various effects. The 1/2 students painted the body of a monster they will construct next week using the skills they have learnt. They will add paper decorations. The Visual Art Program has proven to be great fun whilst learning a wide variety of skills. Ann Diviny - Teacher Senior News - 3/4T In our class we have been learning about our identity. Who we are and things about us. This term we have different chairs and no permanent seats. We have different tables, some are single, some are low, some have cushioned chairs and some have wobbly stools. We like the new furniture in our class because it s different and you can choose where you want to work. In Maths we have been learning about place value, numbers and patterns in one, ten and hundred digits. In Art we have been learning about colours and the colour wheel and learning different skills. Writing has seen us learning and writing about our own about expositions. Alyssa Dennis and Gabrielle Slattery Junior News - Prep T The Preps have had a fantastic start to the year, learning the routines of school and getting to know lots of new friends. We have been enjoying having lunch with our buddy each Tuesday and sharing pancakes with them for Shrove Tuesday. In Maths we have been busy learning our numbers and counting collections to 10 and beyond. We have been learning lots of sounds and listening to how many sounds we can hear in words. We look forward to catching up with everyone at the Parent/Teacher Interviews. Tracy Allan - Teacher Prep T QR Codes - Part of our daily learning Parents and Guardians, you will be noticing an increase in the use of QR codes to share information, access student readers or share student work. Parish News INTERNATIONAL WOMEN S DAY: March 8th 2017. International Women s Day is a global celebration of the economic, political and social achievements of women in the past, present and in the future. The theme the Australian National Committee of UN Women has chosen for International Women s Day on 8th March 2017 is Empower a woman, empower a nation. Together we can empower women across the globe. Women, particularly in developing face systemic discrimination in education, employment, healthcare, control of assets and participation. We can help through Project Compassion during Lent. PROJECT COMPASSION: Like many of her neighbours in her rural village in the Philippines, Dinia struggled to feed and educate her children, and the struggle worsened after her husband s untimely death. But, with the help of a program supported by Caritas Australia, she now has the skills to earn a better income for her children and help her neighbours in her vulnerable community. Please donate to Project Compassion 2017 and help people in rural areas of the Philippines develop their strengths and build better futures for their families and their neighbours.
