Quinlan was considered the best high school player in the country as evidenced by his fourth round selection by the Baltimore Orioles. Upon signing his professional contract, Orioles head scout, Frank McGowan, said that Peter was in a class with three other hitters whom he also sought to sign; Terry Crowley (Baltimore Orioles), Tony Conigliaro, and Cad Yazstremski.
