EURIAC Aim Create a European VET in industrial automation to facilitate young people s entry to the European labor market: Interest gap: Increase young people s interest in vocational education & industrial technology Mobility gap: Create mobility opportunities for young people in VET in industrial automation Knowledge gap: Reduce the gap between educational content & industry multi-skills requirements ECVET gap: Apply & develop ECVET in existing VET in industrial automation at EQF 4 & 5
EURIAC - Objectives Objective 1 Conduct a market investigation to identify the skills needs of maintenance electrians in industrial automation Objective 2 - Utilize the ECVET tools & methods from the European Class in Trucks Maintenance project to create an ECVET platform for EURIAC Objective 3 - Utilize the ValidMaint validation system to establish students skills level before entering the European Class & to validate learning outcomes at completion Objective 4 - Establish a mutual trust consortium of European partners from the industry, administration & education sectors Objective 5 - Test the European Class concept by organizing mobilities with students from Sweden, Finland, Spain & the Netherlands Objective 6 - Disseminate the results of the EURIAC project to strategic stakeholders
ECVET works & adds value ECVET provides a common language & platform for transnational cooperation! The shift to LOs increases the student s self-confidence & engagement in & control of his/her learning process The EURIAC concept being based on ECVET opens up for NON- EURIAC VET providers in IVET & HVET to set up their own European Class International cooperation using ECVET provides bench marking & quality assurance opportunites of national VET Practical experience using ECVET provides VET teacher competence development ECVET-ising national qualifications/units - facilitates the implementation of high quality work placement, advisory board participation & cooperation between VET & the world of work in national qualifications
Identify units What job profile? 1. Agree on what job profile/-s to focus on What work processes & time available for mobility? 2. Identify common work processes for the job profile 3. Determine & agree on the scope of the mobility - what work processes with regard to time frame. Common work tasks for the job profile? 4. Identify & agree on common work tasks for the work processes For instance, the EURIAC mobility unit Working on safety systems includes work processes such as: assembly, programming and commissioning of a production line controlled by a PLC-system including a safety system, risk assessment and fault finding. This enables students to carry out work tasks such as analyse and plan for, install, program, and verify a complete industrial installation as carried out in a common industrial workplace.
Describe learning outcomes Naming of unit & EQF level of qualifications? 5. Create a title for the mobility unit, e.g. based on the work process 6. Identify the EQF level of the involved qualifications Level of difficulty for the training? 7. Decide & describe at what level of difficulty (under instruction, independently, or functioning together in a team) the training of the unit of learning outcomes should be carried out using level descriptors (level of difficulties/ level of responsibility and autonomy) What learning outcomes are involved? 8. Describe the work processes & identify the underlying learning outcomes of a unit in terms of knowledge, skills, & competences: - Begin by identifying the competences, - Then identify the knowledge, - End by identifying the skills. The learning outcomes should be measurable and possible to use for assessment!
What is what? Put the following LOs in the correct column: He/she is responsible for applying the right strategy to fix identified faults. He/she is able to analyse the process that has to be controlled. He/she knows how to recognise if a machine is working in proper conditions. Learning outcomes Knowledge Skill Competence
Example Unit of Learning Outcomes
EURIAC Recommendations - creating Units of learning outcomes Involve VET teachers from day 1 Establish mutual understanding of the difference between learning outcomes & learning input Establish mutual understanding of the term competence Decide on a mutual terminology to be used for describing LOs i.e. active verbs that describe observable action that can be measured Agree on a sufficient level of details for describing learning outcomes to support VET teachers, avoid misunderstandings but still keep the units open enough to allow for technical development Design a pragmatic template for the units of learning outcomes including information such as work process, work tasks, LOs in terms of KSC, level of difficulty, assessment, prerequisite KSC etc. Keep an open mind, be patient & flexible!
Recognition of Learning Outcomes Units has been identified as part national vocational qualifications and has by that been referenced to the same EQF level as the qualification. The concept of ECVET points needs further elaboration to be utilised in practice. The principles of delivering, assessing, and validating the learning outcomes are stated in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Mutual Trust The learning outcomes will not be carried out and assessed again on return The achieved learning outcomes will be documented by using the Europass Mobility.
Lessons learned Using ECVET Establishing a mutual platform & language Create an ECVET glossary in which the national VET qualifications are described in terms of ECVET Creating mutual trust & Memorandum of Understanding Visit each other to see the facilities & equipment Creating Units & Learning Outcomes Really important to involve VET teachers from start in a bottom-up process Learning outcomes should be measurable & created thinking of how to assess them Creating & using a Learning Agreement Young VET students must be able to understand content & aim of the LA Assessing international students A real challenge! Try to focus on assessment tasks & criteria that are common for the job profile of the educational pathway. Still needs to be further elaborated!
EURIAC Effects Improved learning opportunties for students, both for those traveling & those welcoming international students Improved: technical skills, learning strategies, language skills, self-confidence, & personal network for students More attractive & quality assured VET qualifications Competence development for VET professionals Inspiration to & experience of European cooperation Organisational development opportunities for involved organisations & qualifications
Next step EURIAC II Select partners & create a consortium Identify & agree on aim & objectives, e.g: Continue elaboration on ECVET: - Develop existing units & create additional units - Continue the development of an assessment scheme to assess LOs at different EQF levels - Establish cooperation with industry for international work placement - Create a EURIAC network of VET providers offering EURIAC mobility Apply for funding (Erasmus+ strategic partnership project Launch the EURIAC II project in October 2014 (if approved)
