MARCH DIARY DATES NEWSLETTER Week beginning 27 th February 2017 Dear Parents/Carers, This Thursday is World Book Day and is an opportunity for children and staff to dress as characters from their favourite books. We usually have an eclectic mix of costumes and I am sure that this year will be no exception. Whilst the children (and staff) enjoy the dressing up, that is not the main purpose of the day. World Book Day is a celebration! It s a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) it s a celebration of reading. In fact, it s the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world. This is the 20th year there s been a World Book Day, and on 2nd March 2017 children of all ages will come together to appreciate reading. Very loudly and very happily. The main aim of World Book Day in the UK and Ireland is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own (extract taken from The Word Book Day Official Site ). What happens? Thanks to the generosity of National Book Tokens Ltd, publishers and booksellers, we can provide every child at the school with a book voucher. Wednesday 1 st NATIONAL OFFER DAY FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL PLACES PARENTS EMAILED FROM 4:00pm Class and club photos Thursday 2 nd World Book Day Year 5 Gamelan Sevenoaks School Friday 3 rd 6:30pm SPSA Film Night Monday 6 th Sevenoaks Partnership Great British Bake-off. Then They can take their voucher to a local bookseller and can use it to pick one of TEN (exclusive, new and completely free) books. Or, if they d rather, they can use it to get 1 off any book or audio book costing over 2.99 at a participating bookshop or book club (terms and conditions apply). Why encourage your child to read? Parents will often ask how they can support their child with their learning. One of the most important things that any parent can do is to encourage their child to read. Reading is the cornerstone of learning and, just as importantly, it is fun! Alan Duffy Own Clothes Day for winning House team The School Council are introducing a new idea to promote earning house points in Phase 3. Every week the winning house receives a trophy in assembly, and at the end of the year the overall winner is announced. As an additional reward, the overall winning team each term will be allowed to wear own clothes on the last day of each term: Friday 31 st March, Friday 26 th May and Friday 21 st July. Watch the Newsletter to see whose turn it is. The School Council are already thinking of other ways the winning team can be rewarded at the end of the year! Bananas! Thank you to everyone who entered the Accent Catering quiz and colours competitions. We received lots of beautifully coloured bananas and the winner this month is Scarlett in Lions for her rainbow banana. Sarah in 4A had the most correct answers in the quiz. Both children will receive a 5 book token from Accent Catering in their next appropriate assembly. Next month s fruit is the orange and a new quiz and colouring competition will be sent out separately. Paper copies can also be collected at Main Reception. The closing date for entries will be Monday 27 th March.

Handball A team of Year 5 children took part in a Handball Tournament at Knole Academy on Tuesday 23 rd February 2017. This was a follow-on event after the taster session that ran recently for a select number of children. We do not teach handball in our school, however, it seems to be an up and coming sport. The children were very keen and bursting with enthusiasm. The teams were 5 a side, with two girls required on the pitch at all times. Needless to say, the team kept changing as everyone was so keen to play as many matches as possible! We played 7 matches in all, and although we lost 2, we won 3 matches with our best score being 6-1. All the team members played with tenacity using their newly honed handball skills, whilst dealing with the very strong winds blowing across the courts that day! The team members were: Callum, Brooke, Kezia, Thomas, Austin, Matilda, Joe and Sam. Thank you to them all they were a credit to the school.

World Book Day Thursday 2 nd March We shall be celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 2 nd March. As in previous years, we will be inviting the children to come to school that day dressed as a character from a book, or, if they prefer, they can bring in an object relating to a book for the rest of the class to guess the title. Please note that this is entirely voluntary, and your child should not feel obliged to participate if they do not wish to do so. SEND policy The SEND Policy has been approved by our Governors, and is now available on the school website. It can also be found using the following link: SEND Policy We would like to open the Policy up to parent consultation. If you have any comments on the Policy, please send an email by Monday 13 th March for the attention of Nicola Joyce, Inclusion Manager using the address: manager@sevenoaks.kent.sch.uk We look forward to seeing lots of fantastic dressing up! A Team training session On Thursday 16 th February, the Anti Bullying Ambassadors (ABA) visited Rainham Mark Grammar School to participate in activities with other A team members from other schools. For example, Chinese Whispers, where the children grouped together and whispered a sentence to each other. As it moved around the group the sentence changed so that by the end they had a completely different sentence. This shows how a rumour can spread incorrectly about people. They have visited other schools and discussed how they deal with bullying and are now armed with lots of ideas on how to prevent bullying. These will be presented at further assemblies at school. School vacancies We currently have term time vacancies for Breakfast Club and Midday Supervisor staff. Breakfast Club The hours are from 7:30 9:00am five days a week, although we would consider job-share options too. Midday Supervisors The hours are approximately 1.5 per day, five days a week. For an application form, please contact Mrs Sermon in the school office on 01732 453952 or by email: manager@sevenoaks.kent.sch.uk
