SAN JUAN COLLEGE Celebrating Success 2016 Fact Book SAN JUAN COLLEGE Success Matters

Preface The San Juan College Fact Book is an annual publication containing profiles on student enrollment, degree programs, financial aid, employees, and facilities. The data in this publication includes both the 2015-16 academic year and the Fall 2016 Census reports. Some tables only reflect the fall semester data since this is the typical semester that most institutions use for reporting and comparison while other tables show data from the entire academic year and often compare data from prior years to show trends. The intent of this publication is to provide an accurate and consistent reference for use by various internal and external stakeholders. San Juan College serves many constituents by offering both credit and noncredit classes and services. Much of the data presented pertains to credit enrollment, degree programs, fiscal data, and financial aid. Continuing Education and Workforce Training activities, however, account for a number of all college services provided to the community so an entire section is included to show this non-credit information. Credit Enrollment Student Characteristics Fall 2016 Census Beginning in 2010-11, race/ethnicity information was to be collected in compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and Sec. 421(a)(1) of the Carl D. Perkins Vocational Education Act. The Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) reporting instructions corresponded with the Final Guidance on Maintaining, Collecting, and Reporting Racial and Ethnic Data to the U.S. Department of Education, published in the Federal Register on October 19, 2007. Institutions must collect race/ethnicity information using a 2-question format. The first question is whether the student is Hispanic/Latino. The second question is whether the student is from one or more races from the following list: American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, Black or African American, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, and White. Institutions should allow students and staff to self-identify their race and ethnicity. San Juan College asks the following two questions on its general admission application: 1. Do you consider yourself to be Hispanic/Latino? 2. In addition, select one or more of the following racial categories to describe yourself: American Indian, Asian, Black, Pacific Islander, White. Institutions must report aggregate data to the U.S. Department of Education (IPEDS) using the NINE categories below. 1. Hispanic or Latino, regardless of race 5. Black or African American For Non-Hispanic/Latino Individuals 6. Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander 2. Two or more races 7. White For Single-race, Non-Hispanic Individuals In addition, the following categories may be used 3. American Indian or Alaska Native 8. Non-resident alien 4. Asian 9. Race and ethnicity unknown Below is the race/ethnicity in IPEDS format: San Juan College 2016 Fact Book 2-3
