Munkkiniemi School Secondary school, grades 7 9

WELCOME TO MUNKKA! Munkkiniemi School, or Munkka as we know it, is an independent school that comprises both secondary and upper secondary schools. Special features of the secondary school are, for example, a wide selection of languages and a special mathematics class. Also, unlike the upper secondary school in Munkka, the secondary school follows the same timetable throughout the school year. IN MUNKKA WE TEACH AND GUIDE The 7 th -grade pupils are helped to begin their studies by teachers and older students. Due to the pupils timetable that is the same throughout the school year, they have plenty of time to learn the ropes of a new school. It is important to us that pupils truly learn at school and we think that a peaceful and pleasant learning environment is a prerequisite for learning. If there are any learning difficulties, pupils are entitled to get remedial education. In addition, they can participate in extra lessons that are always taught before exams. The educational philosophy of Munkka is to provide pupils with extensive all-round education and to help them gain good results for further studies. After the 9 th grade pupils can apply for upper secondary school in Munkka. Furthermore, there is preparation training available for those who are interested in the upper secondary school s socioeconomic line.

TRADITIONS ARE VALUED IN MUNKKA In August the 7 th -grade pupils traditionally take part in a night trip, Kuutamokeikka, which has been a huge success for more than 15 years. Independence Day is celebrated in a dignified manner that includes formal wear and dancing. In the 8 th grade pupils can participate in the annual debate competition. During the 9 th grade there are different kinds of projects and visits that are planned and organized by homeroom teachers and pupils. Most of the school classes do excursions in Finland or abroad. Both secondary and upper secondary schools gather together in celebrations and ceremonies such as the Independence Day and Christmas. Also the second year students ball and the graduating students farewell party bring the whole school together. THERE IS A SPECIAL MATHEMATICS CLASS IN MUNKKA The pupils for special mathematics class are chosen on grounds of interest and good results after completing the primary school. They are chosen on the basis of aptitude tests and will study mathematics more quickly and extensively than general classes. They will also complete the first courses of upper secondary school in physics and mathematics in the 9 th grade.

Also group instruction classes are available for certain instruments and they are held in Munkka by the music institute. OPPORTUNITIES FOR COMPETITIVE ATHLETES Together with the Helsinki Area Sports Academy (Urhea), the school offers sport and general training for its pupils during school days. In addition to Munkka s

successful basketball team, Urhea network makes it possible to do other sports, too, and pupils can participate in the practices that are run by different sport unions. WE TAKE CARE AND TAKE A STAND Munkka educates active citizens of the world, who take care of other people and the environment. The I Care Program gives a possibility to influence and be active both locally and globally. Munkka s operations have been adapted in accordance with the Green Flag Program. In the Baltic Sea Action Group Program (BSAG) the school is committed to help to save the Baltic Sea. The pupils can also influence in the students union in addition to participating in other communal and environmental activities. COZY AND CLEAN The school and its premises are light, comfortable and clean. There is also a wellequipped sports hall and a cozy library that is up-to-date. All these factors together create a favorable framework for a good learning environment. For more information on applying to Munkka visit www.munkka.fi.
