The preschool end-of-year field trip was to Bramble Park Zoo in Watertown, SD on May 15, 2014. There was lots to see on that chilly day and it was a great end to our year!

Oldham-Ramona preschoolers visited Sylvia Misar's acreage on May 5 and 6, 2014. We have talked about life on the farm and this was our chance to see, touch, and hold animals like sheep, kittens, horses, rabbits, and more.

Fourth Graders Win Sculpture Contest at the Big Sioux Water Festival On Tuesday, May 13, the fourth graders traveled to the campus of SDSU in Brookings to attend the annual Big Sioux Water Festival. They attended six different water-related sessions during the day. One of the highlights of the day was when the class walked by the sculpture exhibit and saw the first place sign by their sculpture. The Wonderful Wheel of Water looks like a Ferris wheel and was made entirely out of recycled materials. It has a paper rain drop on each of the riding carts that gives an idea of what someone can do to help conserve and recycle water. The class won $50 for educational materials, and the Wonderful Wheel of Water will be on display at the Children s Museum in Brookings this summer. Fourth grade students in the back row are Carter, Will, Katie, Ramey, and Alivia; students in the front row are Wyatt, Eli, David, Milli, and Sine. My Favorite Part of the Big Sioux Water Festival: Carter-I liked the Zoo Man because he showed us some animals like a snapping turtle and told us facts about it. Katie-My favorite part of the day at the water festival was when we found out that our class won first place for the sculpture contest. Will- I learned that the oldest fish in the Missouri River is the Shovel-Nose Sturgeon. You can t fish for this fish, and if you would happen to catch one, you would have to put it back in the water. Alivia-My favorite part of the day was when the Zoo Man put a Corn Snake on a kid s head pretending that their head was a rock for the snake to rest on. I learned that when a python rolls into a ball, it looks just like a rock. Sine-I learned that in the past five years the fish in the Missouri River have been cross-breeding and that doesn t happen very often. This happened to the Walleye and the Sauger, and the new fish is called the Saugeye. The Pike is also at the top of the food chain for fresh water animals. Ramey-My favorite part of the day was when the Zoo Man showed us the python and the Corn Snake because these types of snakes don t live in South Dakota. Milli- My favorite part of the day was when the Zoo Man chose me for a volunteer, and he put a Royal Python around my neck. It felt weird, and it was kind of scary. Wyatt-I learned about tree rings you can see on a log. You can count the rings to see how old trees are. Some trees around there can get to be over 300 years old. David-When we went to the fish lady, I learned that fish come in families, and I didn t know that before. Eli-At the water festival I learned that fish have dorsal fins on the top. I had a lot of fun making our Ferris wheel sculpture in class before we went to the water festival.

If you go to www.camppatriotfunrun.org and click on "South Dakota" at the top, and then click on "Register Now". The map says Pasco WA, but I think they know that it's for the Ramona, SD run.
