Annual Report 2014

what we do and why the problem Every child should have the chance to go to school, to learn to read and write. 4 million children in Angola do not have access to primary education. our response RISE builds primary schools in rural Angola to educate children, empower communities and contribute to the rebuilding of the country. Education is the window through which the light can shine into lives enveloped in a dark night of suffering. Andrew Cole, RISE Founder We work to give thousands of children the opportunity to receive an education one child, one classroom, one school at a time

where we work Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. Nelson Mandela RISE builds primary schools in rural areas of Angola, Africa, focusing efforts in the Bie and Benguela Provinces. Since 2003, RISE has built 153 schools in Angola, bringing the opportunity for education to over 100,000 children.

work in 2014 Jimba-Silili, meaning I will sing, I will not cry, was funded at the end of 2013 and constructed in 2014. Books, desks and chalkboards were delivered upon completion of the 8-classroom school. A dedication ceremony with music, dancing, speeches and celebration took place on June 2, 2014, attended by students, families, teachers, village leaders, government officials and a small US team. The next day, 1225 students began to attend class in their beautiful new school. The kids and community watched with excitement as the walls to the new school at Sakapolo went up! Construction was completed in July, and the school was dedicated on August 15th with great celebration. Students, families, community leaders, local administrators, representatives from the Ministry of Education and RISE Angola participated in this special event. Students were given new batas or uniforms and each received a pair of TOMS shoes. The beautiful school has 7 classrooms, bathrooms and office space for the teachers and principal.

work in 2014 A school at Sibol was built in partnership with Baker Hughes, a top-tier oilfield service company in Angola. They invest in places where they work as part of their commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility. Construction of 5 classrooms was completed and a dedication ceremony was held on November 6th. The Mayor of Bocoio and Baker Hughes representatives participated, along with those from RISE Angola, the Ministry of Education, the community and students. Three additional classrooms are under construction at Sibol to accommodate more students.

work in progress There is great need for this new school at the village of Bundiangolo in the Benguela Province. The local administration is grateful for partnership with RISE, and has asked us to build an 8-classroom school, jointly funding the project. There are 525 students, 276 are girls, that have class in three deteriorated mud-block rooms and under trees. There are an additional 500 kids out of school because there is no space, and they long for the chance to get an education. The school at Cacuaco is being built in partnership with BP Oil Angola and Partners. Thousands of children are in need of a school in this area, north of Luanda. There are 420 students excitedly awaiting the completion of their new 6-classroom school.

a broader impact Construction of RISE schools provides jobs for laborers, apprentices, masons and project managers and establishes the need and opportunity for teachers and a principal at each school. As a TOMS Shoes Giving Partner, RISE continues to give new shoes to students - 5394 pairs were distributed in 2014. Wells at school sites allow for education of the importance of clean water, sanitation, health and nutrition. RISE has installed wells at 15 school sites since 2009. A well funded by Willow Creek North Shore was drilled at the Sibol school site. Kids are excited about the clean, fresh water and no longer have to carry it from the river. Another well, funded by BP, was drilled at the site of the new secondary school in Bocoio.
