INDIANA, THE CROSSROADS OF AMERICA Indiana has more miles of Interstate Highway per square mile than any other state. Today more major highways intersect in Indiana than in any other state. Indiana has produced more professional basketball players per capita than any other state, sending 26 of every million citizens to the NBA. Indiana s limestone helped build the Pentagon, the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Washington National Cathedral, and more. Indiana has the smallest area of any state west of the Appalachian Mountains (in the continental U.S.) INDIANA, EDUCATION TODAY Glenda Ritz, Superintendent of Public Instruction for Indiana Born in Lafayette, Indiana and graduated from Jefferson High School, Ms. Ritz holds two master s degrees: (1) in education from Ball State University; (2) in library science from Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) A National Board Certified Teacher, she won two teaching awards during her career. Ms. Ritz has held local and statewide leadership positions in Indiana s teachers union. She won election to Superintendent of Public Instruction in 2012 with 53% of the vote in an upset against the incumbent. Welcome to the Indiana Department of Education!
