STTP : Challenges in ASIC Design Department of Electronics & Telecommunication, organized one week short term training program on Challenges in ASIC Design during 15-19 June 2015. The event was inaugurated by Dr. C. P. Ravikumar, Technical Director, Texas Instruments, Bangalore. In keynote address, he focused on topic more an Moore. He gave detail description about challenges in ASIC design under various circumstances such as global economics, Indian platform for hardware industry. Following topics were covered during training programme : ž Dr. Dinesh Sharma, Professor IIT, Mumbai. He delivered a lecture on challenges in VLSI. He discussed issues like high Keynote Speaker Dr. C. P. Ravikumar speed, low power design, handling mixed, digital and analog circuits, complexity and verification of e design. ž Dr. Mrs. Shaila Subbaraman, Professor WCE, Sangli, briefed about issues like how signal integrity can be major issue in high speed and high packing density digital designs. ž Dr. Sanjay Moghe, RFIC Solutions, USA, explained steps in RFIC design such as marketing requirement, comparative analysis, study of specification, preliminary simulation, detail study of foundry design kit, orough simulation, primary layout, parasitic extraction, final layout, mask out, testing. ž Dr. Dipankar Nagchoudhari, gave detail explanation regarding digital chip design. Topics discussed were from processor to e CMOS digital switch, e inverter, e logical effort model, using of logical effort, issues in logical effort. ž Prof. Dr. R. M. Patrikar, VNIT, Nagpur, discussed interconnect design issues and solution for. ž Prof. Dr. R. B. Deshmukh, VNIT, Nagpur, delivered a lecture on digital low power design at architecture level. He highlighted on issues like Why Low power is main design issue, Solutions for low power, Circuit and Device level Low Power issues. ž Mrs. Renuka, demonstrated how to design RFIC circuits. She has also discussed issues in RFIC design like electromagnetic radiation, noise, phase shift etc. ž Mr. H S. Jatana, Head, VLSI design div, Semiconductor Lab, ISRO, delivered a lecture on analog IC design. Participants wi Mr.H.S.Jatana VIIT - SCL MoU Department of E&TC,VIIT laid a stepping foot by signing a Memorandum of Understanding wi Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL), Department of Space, Government of India on 17 June 2015. The MoU was signed by Mr. H. S. Jatana, Head, VLSI Design Lab, ISRO from Chandigarh on behalf of SCL and Dr. B. S. Karkare, Principal, VIIT. Dr.P.D.Khandekar and Mr.K.J.Raut visited SCL, Chandigarh during 23rd to 26 September 2015. Visit is significant since VLSI research was taken back foot in last two decades because India did not have IC fabrication facilities. Many researchers in is domain failed to publish good quality research papers because ey did not have post MoU wi SCL fabrication results. Sending design to foreign for fabrication was a costly affair requiring minimum10 lacs. Signing of MoU, VIIT received 180nm Technology files designed by SCL and permission to use SCL facilities free of cost to fabricate its own ICs. Scientist in SCL demonstrated various states of arts facilities. Some of ese are: (1) Complete VLSI design flow (2) Fabrication process; water cleaning, oxidation, etching, CVD, ion implantation, liography, sputtering, chemical depositions (3)Packaging process; die cutting, bonding, packaging, automatic post fabrication testing facilities (4)Reliability and quality monitoring facilities. 3

Industry Visit An Industrial Visit to Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS) was arranged on 22nd September 2015 for S.E. 'A' division students. Mr. Apte and Mr. Tambe, briefed us about e technologies used for analysis of dams, power plants, commercial buildings, and water bodies. Students learnt about e instruments used for finding streng of structures, faults, eir constitution, along wi Real Time sensor which measure magnitude of earquake on all ree axis (longitudinal, tangential and vertical). Its high sensitivity also detected magnitude of ground shaking caused by foot taping. During visit we also saw how e calibration of electronic sensors were S.E. Students visited at CWPRS done using mechanical instruments. Seeing e scaled down version of canals was great experience. It was used for analysis of water flow, velocity, water level. The data collected from various sensors was en feed to computer and hence e weakness of structure, failure of dams, and oer factors can be predicted. Inter-disciplinary engineering approach is a necessity for today's modern technology. The importance of integration of electronics and civil engineering can be very well be understood by is visit.
