MATTHEW GIBNEY CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL 30 Munday Road, High Wycombe WA 6057 Phone: 6216 8400 Email: admin@gibney.wa.edu.au Website: www.gibney.wa.edu.au NEWSLETTER No. 23 4th August 2016 LORD my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me. (Psalm 30:2) Dear Parents, Friends and Students On Friday 5th August the school will be holding a Liturgy of the Word with Holy Communion to celebrate the Feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. The Liturgy will begin at 9:00am and it will be held in the undercover area. All parents and members of our community are invited to join with us and then stay for a morning tea that will follow. Thank you to the families who came along to the Friend Up workshop on Tuesday evening. The small group of parents and children who participated learnt about self-regulation and strategies they could use to help to self-regulate. Our two presenters, Anthony and Rod, are committed to working with our school for the next 12 months to continue with these workshops. We will advertise the workshops when they become available and I would encourage parents to take part in them if it is at all possible. The next Parents and Friends meeting will take place on Wednesday 17th August. It will begin at 7:30pm and will be held in the library. All members of our school community are invited to come along. Part of this meeting will be devoted to the upcoming school fair. Again I ask our families to assist with the fair wherever possible. The organising committee are doing a fantastic job to ensure that the day is an outstanding success, so please help out wherever you can. If any parent wishes to nominate an item for the agenda, you are asked to fill in the sheet that is part of this newsletter. Our first assembly for this term will take place on Friday 12th August. All parents and members of our community are invited to join with us. The Year 3 class will be hosting this assembly. A box has been placed near the Year 6 classroom where old school uniforms can be placed. These uniforms will be sent off to orphanages that are sponsored by Father Francis. Thank you to those families who have already deposited their uniforms. On Monday 15th August the school will be joining the Parish to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven. This is one of two holy days of obligation in the Church s calendar, the other being Christmas Day. A holy day of obligation is a day deemed by the Church to be especially holy and all Catholics are obliged to attend Mass. The Mass of the Assumption will be held at St Francis of Assisi Church and will begin at 9:30am. All parents and members of our community are very welcome to join with us. In the first week back this term, students from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 represented our school in the Christian drama section of the Catholic Schools Performing Arts Festival. We received word last week that our students received an honourable mention, the highest accolade you can receive at the Festival. This is a great achievement for our students and our school and they are to be congratulated on their outstanding performance. There was a copy of the adjudicator s report in last week s newsletter which clearly showed how impressed she was with the performance. I would like to thank Mrs Aldred for the work that she put into preparing the students and the staff for their support. Our annual book fair will take place on the 17th-19th August. This will take place in the library. Parents are encouraged to participate in the fair as a percentage of the sales is given to the school to purchase resources. STUDENTS RETURN TERM 4 2016 Assistant Principal s Religious Education News Our Year 3 and 5 students will participate in the in The Bishops Religious Literacy Assessment (BRLA). The Bishops Religious Literacy Assessment is a large-scale, standardised assessment program. The BRLA consists of a series of Religious Education (RE) tests across a number of year levels. Year 5 tests are marked by the office of Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA). Formal school and student reports are produced by CEWA for students in Year 5 and Year 9. The BRLA provides a point in time snapshot of student performance in RE. Students knowledge and understanding of the content of the RE curriculum is assessed using a combination of multiple choice, short and extended response items. Students faith is not assessed. The use of the BRLA complements the school based assessment programs in RE. We wish our Year 3 and 5 students all the best as they complete this assessment. Karen Keddie Assistant Principal RE DATES FOR ATHLETICS CARNIVAL & INTERSCHOOL ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Thursday 1st September Jumps & Throws Friday 2nd September Faction Athletics Carnival Friday 16th September Interschool Athletics Carnival Year 1 News It was very exciting last week when we discovered that we have been at school for 100 days! Luckily we have become very confident when counting in 10s, so it does not take us long to count to 100 and beyond. We have also been busy practising counting coins. A money game was sent home on Monday to assist the children in becoming more competent with counting coins. We have written prayers about the colours we see in our world and then went on a magazine search to find these colours. We were amazed at all the different shades of the colours in our world. How blessed we are! Thank you to those who were able to complete the Look up at the Sky homework sheet. It is not too late to send the sheet in if it has been completed. We are looking forward to learning more about Australia s first saint, Mary Mackillop at tomorrow morning s Mass. Just a reminder that there are still many spaces left to assist with changing reading books or helping with reading groups. Your help is greatly appreciated! Gina Nickels Kindy News We have had a very busy few weeks. This week we have welcomed with great excitement, a brand new smartboard. We have been learning about how we are all the same, but how God also made us all different and special. We have graphed our heights, eye colour and the letters in our names. This week we have thanked God for our hands and have made hand X-rays. We have also done some hand art inspired by Andy Warhole, as well as learning how our hands help us to feel different textures. Thank you to all parents who are helping their children return their reading books on a Monday, it is most appreciated. The reading books must be returned on a Monday if they are to be changed, unless your child is away. Thank you also to parents who have kept sick children home. This too is most appreciated, as when a child is unwell the only place they want to be is at home and it stops spreading germs. We are still trying to master coughing into our elbows! Please remember that your child can access the computer programme Reading Eggs at home on your family computer or ipads. The passwords and user names were sent home last week and the children have been taught in IT lessons how to login and use the programme. Reading Eggs will help your child develop their computer skills and practice literacy concepts at the same time. Year 3 News The Year 3 children have started their Olympic activities and are very excited as they countdown to the 2016 Rio Olympics. They have already completed some awesome alfoil art as they skilfully manipulated the alfoil to represent the 2016 sporting icons. This week, we also have our Bishop s Religious Literacy Assessment practice (The BRLA). Next week the children will complete the assessment online. In class we have been revising our knowledge of RE content learnt. The children have made an outstanding commencement to their projects. A reminder to parents, that the children will have some class time to complete project work. If there are any queries, please do not hesitate to contact me. Next week the Year 3 assembly will take place. The children have been asked to wear sporting attire. I look forward to seeing you all at the assembly next week. Joanne Brescacin OLD SCHOOL UNIFORM DONATIONS Do you have any old school uniforms you would like to donate? Please place your donations in the box provided (starting Monday 25th July) in the wet area near the Year Six classroom. Father Francis will be sending the donated uniforms to an orphanage overseas. Year 5 News Year 5 has been very happy to welcome Miss Melissa Taylor from Notre Dame University, as she completes her fourth year of teaching studies. Miss Taylor has been doing lots of great activities with the Year 5 students. The students have been making wonderful Olympic advertisement posters, in the countdown to the start of the Games in Rio. In Literacy, they are researching Olympic athletes from across a number of sports, and are preparing to write an encouraging message for them, as they compete. On Mondays with Mrs Plain, the students have been making horror movie trailers using the ipads, developing their skills in planning, filming and editing. Who knows what budding Alfred Hitchcock's we have in Year 5? This week, we also have our Bishop s Religious Literacy Assessment (The BRLA). We have been working hard, revising all the knowledge we have learnt over the past few years in RE, so we hope that we do really well. We have a group of amazing parents who have spent many hours putting together and planning the fair so far. I would like to say a huge thank you to each and every one of them for their efforts. We will be working out rosters for the school stalls in the next few weeks. It would be greatly appreciated if you could volunteer to help out in the stalls on the day. All money raised from the fair will go towards providing resources for Literacy and Numeracy, and to replace equipment and uniforms for interschool sporting events. Please ask family and friends to Like our Facebook page for the fair, which also helps everyone to keep up-to-date with all the stall holders and the companies that have kindly donated to the fair. Simply go to fair@mgcpspandf.org.au A huge thank you to everyone for the donation of jars, pipe cleaners, material, wool and buttons. We have enough for now, so please don t send any more. We now need clean yoghurt containers with lids. Your class stall holder coordinators will be sending letters home in the next few weeks. Any help you can provide them would be appreciated. If you wish to drop anything off at school for your class stall or another class, please place these items in the tubs above the cupboards in the passage near Year 5 and Year 6 classes and not in the front office.
