President s Message I express my heartfelt pleasure for the inaugural edition of the e-newsletter by Sonepur College, Sonepur. I wish the newsletter will see many editions in the years to come. Sonepur College has a long glorious past and hope that it will continue to add more laurels to its glory. I congratulate Dr. Priyalata Jena, Principal and all the teaching and non-teaching staffs for this remarkable feat. Sri. S N Dash, Sub-Collector, Subarnapur and President, G.B. of the College

Principal s Message I take immense pleasure in that our college has been able to bring out the first edition of the e-newsletter in the beginning of the academic session 2017-18. Our college has achieved many milestones both in the academic and non-academic fields since its establishment in 1964. The college has been able to produce many brilliant students and has created scope for their overall development. The newsletter covers some of the spectacular achievements that the college had in the last academic session. Our college was visited by the NAAC peer team in the last academic session and accredited the college with grade B. Dr. Priyalata Jena, Principal I congratulate all the students who successfully completed their intermediate and graduation in the last session. Our college feels proud for the students who held ranks in the final degree university and in the CHSE examination. I also congratulate all those students who participated and represented in different competitions at different levels and achieved awards for the college. I thank all the teaching and non-teaching staffs of the college who contributed to the achievements. I also take this opportunity to thank the faculty members who endeavored to compile this newsletter. I wish that the college will bring more laurels in the new academic session-2017-18.

NAAC Visit The NAAC peer team visited Sonepur College, Sonepur from 3 rd to 5 th Nov 2016 lead by Prof. Pratik Kumar Chaudhuri as Chairperson, Prof Raj Kumar as Member Coordinator and Dr. P Shekhar as Member. In the three days the team interacted with the faculty members, non-teaching staffs, students, visited different departments, library, hostel and other facilities available in the college. The team verified different documents and accounts during the visit. A cultural program was organized by the Students Union on the second day of the visit and showcased their talents. A valedictory program was organized on the final day of the visit in which the team members proposed certain recommendations and shared their experiences. Our college has been accredited with Grade B in the last academic session.

Consultation Meeting for IDP Consultation meetings were organized with different stakeholders to develop a blueprint for the Institutional Development Plan (IDP) in the last quarter. The governing body members were first assembled and their suggestions were invited for the IDP. The alumni of the college were also invited to share their opinions on the IDP for the overall development of the college. The faculty members, nonteaching staffs, students were assembled in separate meetings to invite their suggestion to chalk out a plan. All the sessions were chaired by Dr. Priyalata Jena, Principal. Sri Swarup Panigrahi, IDP Institutional Coordinator, Dr. Debendra Kumar Pradhan, IDP Institutional Associate Coordinator, and other IDP team members were also present. The suggestions given by the stakeholders were included in the original IDP proposal which was submitted to the Higher Education Dept. for funding. The college has proposed many infrastructural and academic activities in the IDP and will be implemented in the next five year. The college is very hopeful that it will be funded by the World Bank.

Releasing of Manisha The annual college magazine Manisha was released on 25 th Oct 2016. Sri Prafulla Rath, DLC, Sonepur was invited as the Chief Guest, Dr. Jyoti Ranjan Bohidar was invited as Guest of Honour on the occasion. Dr. Priyalata Jena, Principal presided over the meeting. Dr. Bhaskara Mishra, Head of Department, Sanskrit coordinated the meeting. After the release of the magazine copies were distributed among the faculty members and students. Manisha, is the creative output of the faculty members, students and others who have contributed their articles, poems, stories for publication in it.

Inauguration of Language Lab In the last academic session 22 students have been trained on basics of grammar, phonetics, resume writing, job application, business letter, interview skills and group discussion and on different aspects of communication in English by Sri Sanjib Kumar Sahu, Lecturer in English. In the upcoming session, a self-financing course on Communicative English and Personality Development is being designed for the students. The duration of the course will be 5 months and will focus on both oral and written communication. A sophisticated, state-of-the-art Language Laboratory was inaugurated by Sri S. N Dash, Sub-collector, Subarnapur and President, Governing Body of the college. With a sitting capacity of 24 seats and adorned with latest technology the laboratory is being used to enrich the communication skills of the students.

Felicitation of Achievers Students of Sonepur College, Sonepur who completed their intermediate under Council of Higher Education and graduation under the Sambalpur University having highest ranks in different streams and honours programmes were felicitated in the academic session 2016-17. Sri S N Dash, Sub-Collector, Subarnapur and President, Governing Body was invited as the Chief Guest and Smt. Renuka Mishra, Retired Principal was invited as Guest of Honour to the felicitation ceremony. The ceremony was chaired by Dr. Priyalata Jena, Principal and was coordinated by Sri Bhaskara Prasad Mishra, IQAC Coordinator. The meritorious students were encouraged to do well in their life.

Self-Defence Training for Girls To empower the girl students a self-defence training program was organized on the Sonepur College campus from 17 th to 30 th Nov 2016. The program was organized under the chairmanship of Dr. Priyalata Jena, Principal and Nodal Officer. Sri U K Nag, District Coordinator, Sri B P Mishra, Sri S N Rath, and Sri A K Hota encouraged the girl students to participate in the training program actively. The training program trained 60 intermediate and 60 graduate students. girl students on basics of martial arts to protect themselves from any kind of physical assault. Every year the training program is being sponsored by the Department of Higher Education, Government of Odisha.

Our Alumnus Padmashree Nila Madhab Panda Internationally acclaimed film director and producer Padmashree Nila Madhab Panda visited Sonepur College, Sonepur and interacted with the faculty members and students. Mr. Panda is an alumnus of the college. The college honoured him with a memento and a shawl on the occasion. While interacting with the students he shared his experiences of his college days and his journey as film director and producer. He encouraged the students to study well and make the college proud with their achievements. Mr. Panda has directed movies like I am Kalam, Jalpari, Babloo Happy Hai, Kaun Kitne Pani Main and God s Own people. For the movie I am Kalam he won one National award and 32 International awards.

Distribution of Laptops The meritorious students of the college were provided laptops under the Biju-Yuva Sashaktikarana Yojana for their outstanding performance in the Annual High School Examination, 2016. The laptop distribution ceremony was attended by Sri Dasarathi Satpathy, Collector & D.M. as Chief Guest and Sri S N Dash, Sub-Collector as Guest of Honour. Dr. Priyalata Jena, Principal, coordinated the ceremony. The students were encouraged to perform well in academics.

Annual Athletic Meet: 2016-17 The 47 th Annual Athletic Meet was organized in the college playground on 9 th and 10 th Feb 2017. It was inaugurated by our Principal, Dr. P.L. Jena. The athletes had a march with the torch from Sureswari Temple to the playground. Students took part in different sports activities such as; running 100mts, 200mts, 400mts and 1500mts, javelin throw, shot put, discus throw, long jump, high jump etc. The two days event was participated by the students with a sportive spirit. The students who won different medals were awarded in the concluding ceremony by Superintendent of Police, Subarnapur. All the teaching and non-teaching staffs coordinated the events with full enthusiasm.

Seminar by Odia Department A one day seminar was organized by the Department of Odia, Sonepur College, Sonepur on 30 th Dec 2016 on the topic Odia Kshudra Galpa: Atita, Vartaman evam Vabisyata. The seminar was inaugurated by Sri S N Dash, Sub-Collector, Subarnapur as Chief Guest. Dr. Priyalata Jena, Principal, presided over the meeting and gave the welcome address. Sri Buddhadev Pradhan, Head Department of Odia delivered the introductory speech. Sri Sourabh Ranjan Khamari, introduced the guests on the occasion. Dr. Manindra Meher, Reader in Odia from Utkal University delivered the keynote address. Sri Saroj Kumara Jagdala, Lecturer in Odia and Minkentan Kumbhar, Lecturer in Odia presented their seminar papers relevant to the theme of the seminar. Lectures and students from different colleges of the state shared their views in the seminar.

Seminar by Political Science Department A state level seminar was organized by the Department of Political Science in collaboration with IQAC on 17 th Dec 2017 on Constitution of India: Retrospect and Prospect. The inaugural ceremony was held with Sri S N Dash, Sub- Collector as Chief Guest, Mrs. Renuka Mishra, Retired Pricipal, as Guest of Honour, Dr. Rajat Kumar Kujur, Asst. Professor, and Dr. Suresh Chandra Patel, Asst. Professor from Sambalpur University as resource persons. The inaugural session was presided by Dr. Priyalata Jena, Principal. Sri S N Rath, Head, Department of Polticial Science introduced the guests. Dr. Mahendra Kumar Dash, Lecturer in Political Science and Sri Raki Biswal, Lecturer in Political Science presented their papers on the theme of the seminar. The seminar was participated by lecturers and students from Sonepur College, Sonepur and from other colleges of the state.

Seminar by English Department A state level seminar on English Studies amidst Cultural Globalization: New Perspectives was organized on 11 th Feb 2016 in association with IQAC. The inaugural ceremony was attended by Sri Dasarathi Satpathy, District Collector as Chief Guest who also presented a paper on the theme of the seminar. Dr. Priyalata Jena, Principal gave the inaugural speech. Sri Lokesh Chandra Pradhan, Head, Department of English, introduced the guests. Sri Bhaskara Prasad Mishra, Coordinator IQAC, gave the vote of thanks. Dr. Panchanan Mishra, Retired Professor, G M University delivered the keynote address in the state level seminar organized by Department of English, Sonepur College, Sonepur. Tyagraj Thakur, Assistant Professor of English, Sillicon Institute of Technology, Sambalpur University chaired a technical session and presented a paper. The final year students of the department presented papers on the different aspects of English as global language. Lecturers from different colleges of the state participated in the seminar.

Examinations and Results Intermediate In the last academic session, 388 students appeared the Council of Higher Education Examination-2017. Out of which 299 in Arts, 70 in Science and 19 in Commerce. The college had a over all pass rate of 70.87 out of which 72.35 in Arts, 65.71 in Science and 72.35 in Commerce. The following students held ranks in the college for their outstanding performance : Arts Subhashri Satabdi Sahu, Debashish Mahanandia, Sumanta Deep Science Soumya Ranjan Mahapatra, Kapileswar Satpathy, Prajna Parimita Pandia Commerce Riddhi Agrawalla, Mrutyunjaya Kheti, Dinabandhu Mahapatra +3 Final Degree In the last academic session, 159 students appeared the +3 Final Degree Examination-2017 under Sambalpur University out of which 83 in Arts, 65 in Science and 11 in Commerce. The college had a over all pass rate of 62.87 in Arts, 87.83 in Science and 52.38 in Commerce. The following students held ranks in the university for their outstanding performance. Computer Science Chandra Sekhar Meher-1 st, Spandan Purohit-2 nd, Bimalini Meher-3 rd, Murti Ranjan Tandi-6 th, Ankit Sahu- 7 th and Swayam Sidhha Pujari- 9 th Science Bidyut Prava Rath (Math) -2 nd, Sagarika Nanda (Math)-9 th, Supriya Meher (Phy)- 3 rd, Amrita Anchal (Zool) 4 th, and Saswatika Acharya (Zool)- 7 th Arts Sumit Bagh (Sans)-7 th, Radheshyam Barik (Sans)-10 th, Alok Kumbhar (Edu)-9 th and Bikash Ranjan Sethi (Eco)-10 th

Campus Recruitment A campus recruitment drive was organized to recruit as graduate trainees by Vedanta Aluminum and Power Ltd. on 20 th Feb 2017 on the Sonepur College campus. The recruitment drive was attended by 27 students. The selection process was organized in three phases. In the first phase students appeared a written test followed by personal interview in the second phase. In the final phase they had an interaction with the human resource manager of the company. Finally, three students were selected to join Vedanta as graduate trainees. The recruitment drive was coordinated by Sri Swarup Kumar Panigrahi, Coordinator of Career Counseling Cell, Sonepur College, Sonepur.

Extracurricular Activities Different extracurricular activities such as Quiz, Debate Competition both in Odia and English, Essay Competition both in Odia and English, Drawing Competition, Mehendi Competition, Rangoali Competition, Alpana Competition, Painting Competition for the graduate and intermediate students were held separately. A lot of students took part in these competitions and showcased their talents. These events were judged by the faculty members. The college has proposed to award these students with medals and certificate in a program. The competitions were coordinated by the teaching and non-teaching staff of the college.

Ph.D Awardees In the last academic session, two of our faculty members were awarded with Ph.D. degrees. Sonepur College, Sonepur congratulates them for their academic achievements. Dr. Anil Ganga Dev, Lecturer in Physics was awarded Ph.D. from Berhampur University under the supervision of Prof. Rankanidhi Sahu, Dept. of Physics, Berhampur University and Prof. Suresh Kumar Patra, Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar. His thesis was on the topic Giant Dipole Resonance Studies of Rapidly Rotating Hot Nuclei Dr. Dev thanked his friends, colleagues and family members who extended their support, love and care to achieve this milestone. Dr. Amaresh Sahoo, Lecturer in History was awarded Ph.D from Sambalpur University under the supervision of Dr. Debanand Chopdar. His thesis was on the topic Boudh: Its History and Heritage" He expressed his gratitude to his supervisor and others who helped him in this endeavor. He expressed his indebtedness to all members of his family and relatives for their love, encouragement and moral support to achieve it.

Orientation of New Faculties An orientation programme was organized on 17 th Oct. 2016 for the 13 new faculties who joined the college in the academic session 2016-17 recruited by State Selection Board, Odisha. Sri S.N. Dash, President, Governing Body and Dr. P. Jena, Principal oriented the newly appointed lecturers on different affairs of the college. The new lecturers joined in different department such as: Dr. K.Haripal (Botany), Sri L.D. Sahoo (Chemistry), Sri S.K Sahu (English), Ms A. Munda (English), Sri K.C. Bhoi (History), Sri R.K. Mishra (Logic & Phil.), Sri K.S. Sahu (Mathematics), Sri S.K. Jagadala (Odia), Mrs N.Pradhan (Odia), Dr. M.K. Dash (Pol. Sc.), Sri R. Biswal (Pol. Sc), Sri S.Pasayat (Physics), Dr. K.Chand (Sanskrit).

Participation in Inspire Science Camp A team comprising 8 intermediate students and Dr. Anil Ganga Dev, Lecturer in Physics from Sonepur College, Sonepur participated in the Inspire Science Camp. The camp was organized on the campus of National Institute of Science and Technology, (NIST) Berhampur from 31 st January - 4 th February 2017. The science camp was sponsored by the Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India. The objective was to motivate and inspire the talented students to take up Science and Research as a career. It was addressed by top scientists of India including Bhatnagar Awardees and global icons of Science including Nobel laureates. The students were exposed to hands-on experience in advanced laboratories.

Farewell and Welcome A program was organized to bid farewell to Smt. Swarnamayee Mishra, Reader in Education on her superannuation from service on 30 th June, 2017 in the Staff Common room of Sonepur College, Sonepur. The meeting was presided by Dr. Priyalata Jena, Principal, Sri Bhaskara Prasad Mishra, Head, Department of Sanskrit coordinated the event. Sri Saurabh Ranjan Khamari formally welcomed all the faculty members to the meeting She was felicitated with a certificate of appreciation and saree on the occasion. Colleagues from the Department of Education and Sonepur College shared their happy memories with Smt. Mishra on the occasion. They narrated their experiences of working together. All of them appreciated the sincerity and diligence of Smt. Mishra. Smt. Mishra also shared her memories which she had while working in the college. She told that she had a wonder spell of around 28years in the college. It is a painful moment to retire from an organization after working for such a long time. She also thanked all her colleagues for their love and care. On this occasion Smt. Krishnapriya Mahapatra, Reader in Zoology and Smt. Rajalata Aliva, Lecturer in Odia were welcomed to the college. Both of them joined the college recently transferred the former from B.P. College, Boudh and the later from A.E.S. Tarbha College.
