The Rockhurst High School Junior College Planning Portfolio College Search/Planning Timeline (STUDENTS) January 10 th Students come by the college counseling office to sign- up for an appointment with your college counselor. January 11 th College counselors begin meeting with students. Visit the college counseling office to schedule a meeting with your college counselor to accomplish the following: o Determine and fine tune your college search criteria. o Develop or identify additional schools to grow your current list. o Identify the next steps to take in your search and selection process. January 24th JR Parents College planning program. (5:30 6:45 PM ROSE THEATER) The rest of the spring semester (during the semester, spring break, etc.) Visit some colleges as time permits (spring break is a popular time for this activity.) o Permission must be received from the CCO prior to leaving school for visits during the semester. o Juniors are allowed 2 visits per academic year. o College visits requested for the day before and/or after a holiday or a no- school day will not be considered for approval. o Written request from parents must be brought into the CCO a week prior to absence. o The CCO will then issue you a form to take to all your teachers for their signatures. o This form must be returned to the CCO before the visit may be fully considered for approval. ALWAYS register to take the ACT with writing o (ALWAYS INCLUDE the RHS SCHOOL CODE WHEN REGISTERING: 261685). NEW RHS STANDARDIZED TESTING POLICY: Students are responsible for contacting ACT and SAT directly and arranging to have their scores sent to the appropriate college or university. Students are responsible for meeting all deadlines, costs and requirements. Rockhurst will not send out any test scores. We ask that you continue to report all of your scores to Rockhurst High School for data purposes only however, they are also a valuable part of the advising process. Take the ACT and SAT beginning this spring semester. Take the SAT in January and thereafter (all colleges/universities accept either test) Consider taking AP exams in appropriate subjects (see school calendar) in May. Test registration begins in March. Take SAT II tests in appropriate subjects (Depends on where you intend to apply and if its required) o It is highly suggested that you take SAT subject tests shortly after you ve had the class. Access test dates for ACT via www.act.org and SAT1 & SAT Subject tests via www.collegeboard.org Page 2 of 5

SERVICE ACADEMIES Student interested in applying to any of the service academies should access the particular academy s website for information on the application process as soon as possible. It is imperative that you begin the process of gathering all the information necessary for this process immediately. Please note that it is your College Counselor not your Guidance Counselor that will assist and provide guidance as you navigate the application process for these schools. All transcript requests and counselor forms should be submitted to your College Counselor in the College Placement Office. United States Air Force Academy Colorado Springs, CO - www.usafa.af.mil/ United States Coast Guard Academy New London, CT - www.cga.edu/ United States Military Academy West Point, NY - www.usma.edu/ United States Naval Academy Annapolis, MD - www.usna.edu/ United States Merchant Marine Academy Kings Point, NY - www.usmma.edu/ United States Air Force ROTC - http://www.afrotc.com/ West Point - www.admissions.usma.edu Applying to a military academy requires more time and effort then it takes to gain acceptance to a state school or a conventional private school. The process should begin second semester of junior year and hopefully will reach a successful conclusion in March or April of Senior Year. The process is exactly the same for a student recruited to play a sport. Step One: Read the individual requirements for each academy you are interested in attending. See above. Step Two: Once you have decided which academies you would like to apply to register on the appropriate site. (This can be done as early as April of Junior Year and should definitely be done before senior year is started). Once you are in the system you will receive a packet and access to the website for admission. The Navy and the Air Force prefer that the website be used to fill out forms. The Army and Coast guard are more flexible. Step Three: Take the ACT or the SAT as soon as possible. Check each site carefully for which tests are required. As of 2008/09 the Army is requiring that a student take the writing section of the SAT or the ACT. (By October of Senior Year) Step Four: Nominations. Nominations from your congressman or senator are required for admittance to an academy. Each congressman or senator has different requirements and deadlines. Most of these deadlines are early to later October but it is best to have them in as early as possible. A transcript, recommendation from your college counselor and test scores are generally required. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO CONTACT THE CONGRESSMAN OR SENATOR. Step Five: (August, September). It is important that you complete all parts of the application and have requested transcripts from the College Counseling Office submitted. The application is very extensive for each academy. In most cases a recommendation is required from a math and English teacher and your College Counselor. Once the forms are filled out you will be required to have a military physical. These physicals are performed by military personnel so you need leave ample time to get them set up. Step Six: The Physical Fitness requirement must also be done before the end of the first semester of senior year. This can be scheduled with Coach Severino, or Mr. Burns. This generally takes about an hour and you need to be in good shape to perform the required exercises. NOT DOING WELL CAN HOLD UP A NOMINATION. Step Seven: December, January. Senators and Congressman will send out their Nominations. If you do not receive a nomination there are other avenues that can be explored. At this point, make sure you respond in a timely manner to any communication with your academy. Step Eight: Acceptance. (Kiss your summer goodbye; you will be leaving in late June). Page 3 of 5
