OSGC Scholarship and Fellowship Program Guide Section I. Introduction to the Programs The Oregon NASA Space Grant Consortium (OSGC) is pleased to provide students attending our member colleges and universities an opportunity to apply for a one-time scholarship or fellowship award that will support their academic study in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and STEM education. These awards will also serve to recognize their achievements in these fields. The OSGC Scholarship and Fellowship Program supports the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) objectives of fostering and encouraging careers in STEM and STEM education and developing a diverse and capable next-generation workforce. For all of these programs women and individuals from underrepresented groups in the STEM fields are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants will need to demonstrate how their field of study relates to the NASA Vision and the activities of the various Mission Directorates. NASA Vision: To reach for new heights and reveal the unknown so that what we do and learn will benefit all humankind. Mission Directorates: Aeronautics Research Enables a safer, more secure, efficient, and environmentally friendly air transportation system Human Exploration and Operations Operates the International Space Station and prepare for human exploration beyond low Earth orbit Science Exploring the Earth-Sun system, our solar system, and the universe beyond. Divisions include Astrophysics, Earth Science, Heliophysics, and Planets Space Technology Develops the crosscutting, advanced pioneering new technologies needed for current and future missions, benefiting the aerospace industry and other agencies, and addressing national needs. In addition to the traditional aerospace-related fields of engineering and mathematics, diverse fields of study including earth sciences, chemistry, biology, food science, and computer science are also eligible. We encourage students to contact OSGC if they have questions about whether their field of study is suitable. The following programs are available for the 2016-17 Academic Year*: OSGC Community College Scholarships Section II OSGC Undergraduate Scholarships Section III OSGC Undergraduate Research Fellowships Section IV Scholarship and fellowship descriptions and eligibility requirements vary by program. Section II. OSGC Community College Scholarships This one-time scholarship is designed to encourage community college students to explore programs in STEM and STEM education fields of study. Scholarships will be competitively awarded to students enrolled at OSGC affiliated Community Colleges. Students who are dual enrolled in a community college and a 4-year institution are eligible to apply as long as minimum enrollment eligibility is met. Up to six (6) awards, in the amount of $3,000 per student will be offered during the 2016-17 academic year. These awards will be made in two disbursements, the first in the amount of $1,500 in October of 2016. The second disbursement of $1,500 in March of 2017 will be contingent upon the submission of documentation showing student progress toward their stated educational goals. This is a one-time award, paid in two disbursements over one academic year only. Of these awards, at least one (1) will be awarded to a student attending an OSGC affiliated Minority Serving Institution (MSI) - see list in Section I. Dates Deadlines OSGC Community College Scholarships Important dates and deadlines for the 2016-17 competition for all institutions are as follows: Application Deadline: May 20, 2016 Award Selections: July 2016 Award Disbursements ($1,500 each): October 2016 and March 2017 Eligibility Scholarships are open to community college students who meet the following eligibility criteria: Student is currently enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours per term at an affiliated Community College at the time of application (winter 2016) and remains enrolled for the duration of the award (through spring 2017). Student is enrolled in STEM or STEM education coursework during the 2016-2017 academic year Student maintains good academic standing Student is a U.S. Citizen 2016-17 OSGC Scholarship and Fellowship Program Guide Page 4 of 10

Required Application Materials OSGC Community College Scholarships Student Essay Please submit a one-page essay (12 pt font, single spaced) that answers the following questions: What are your interests in STEM and what areas would you like to explore in your academic career? How do your academic interests relate to the NASA vision and align with one or more of the NASA Mission Directorates? Letter of Recommendation One letter of recommendation is required. The letter should specifically address your qualifications for this scholarship. During the application process you will be asked to provide contact information for your letter writer. Upon submission of your application this individual will receive an email request for the letter and instructions on how it is to be submitted. The due date for the letter of recommendation is May 20, 2016. Academic Transcript A PDF version of your academic transcript must be submitted with your online application. Unofficial transcripts from your college or university website are acceptable. A formal request for these materials will be sent via email prior to the renewal date; renewals will be submitted via an online system. Progress Reports for 2016-17 OSGC Community College Scholarship Recipients Please provide an update of the progress you have made toward your academic pursuits since receiving the award. Relate your progress back to your essay that was included in your scholarship application. Some items you may wish to include: What classes did you take or are currently taking that will directly help with the goals outlined in your essay? What other classes do you plan to take this academic year that will directly help with your goals? What has it meant to you and your academic progress since receiving the first scholarship payment? Has the scholarship helped you achieve your goals outlined in your essay, or have they changed? If so, how? Section III. OSGC Undergraduate Scholarships This one-time scholarship is intended to promote and retain student enrollment in STEM, STEM education, and Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) programs. Scholarships will be competitively awarded to freshmen, sophomore, and junior level students enrolled at an OSGC affiliated 4-year institution. Up to ten (10) awards, in the amount of $5,000 per student will be offered during the 2016-17 academic year. These awards will be made in two disbursements, the first in the amount of $3,000 in October of 2016. The second disbursement of $2,000 in March of 2017 will be contingent upon submission of documentation showing student progress toward their stated educational goals. This is a one-time award, paid in two disbursements over one academic year only. Student is enrolled in STEM, STEM education coursework or an MAT program during the 2016-17 academic year Student maintains good academic standing Student is a U.S. Citizen Required Application Materials OSGC Undergraduate Scholarships Letter of Intent Please submit a one-page letter of intent (12 pt font, single spaced) that demonstrates or answers the following: Indicate your STEM career goals as they relate to NASA s vision and how they align with one or more of the NASA Mission Directorates. How will this scholarship contribute to your goals? Describe how your career choice will benefit the STEM community at large. Include other information that you believe qualifies you for scholarship consideration. Student Resume Include relevant employment, education, and extra-curricular activities. Resume should also provide current contact information including email, phone, and mailing address. Letter of Recommendation One letter of recommendation is required. The letter should specifically address your qualifications for this scholarship. During the application process you will be asked to provide contact information for your letter writer. Upon submission of your application this individual will receive an email request for the letter and instructions on how it is to be submitted. Progress Reports for 2016-17 OSGC Undergraduate Scholarship Recipients Please provide an update of the progress you have made toward your academic pursuits since receiving the award. What other classes do you plan to take this academic school year that will directly help with your goals? What has it meant to you and your academic progress since receiving the first scholarship payment? Has the scholarship helped you achieve your goals outlined in your essay, or have they changed? If so, how? Section IV. OSGC Undergraduate Research Fellowships These one-time research awards are intended to build collaboration between undergraduate students and faculty mentors working within a STEM discipline. Fellowships will be competitively awarded to students enrolled at an OSGC affiliated 4-year institution. Students must work with a faculty mentor who supports and guides the student research. Faculty mentors must provide a letter of support and current CV as part of the student s application. Submitted research proposals must be written primarily by the student applicant. Up to two (2) research fellowships, in the amount of $8,000 per student will be offered during the 2016-17 academic year. These awards will be made in two disbursements, the first in the amount of $4,000 in October of 2016. The second disbursement of $4,000 in March 2017 will be contingent upon the submission of documentation showing student progress toward their stated educational goals and the goals of the proposed research project. Of these awards, at least one (1) will be awarded to a student attending an OSGC affiliated Minority Serving Institution (MSI) - see list in Section I. Dates Deadlines OSGC Undergraduate Research Fellowships Important dates and deadlines for the 2016-17 competition for all institutions are as follows: Application Deadline: May 20, 2016 Award Selections: July 2016 Award Disbursements ($4,000 each): October 2016 and March 2017 Eligibility Fellowships are open to undergraduate students who meet the following eligibility criteria: Student is enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours per term at an affiliated 4-Year institution at the time of application (winter 2016) and remains enrolled for the duration of the award (through spring 2017). Student is enrolled in STEM or STEM education coursework during the 2016-17 academic year Student maintains good academic standing Student is a U.S. Citizen Students who wish to apply for a research award must closely follow the Proposal Guidelines at the end of this section. Along with the online application, application packets must include a written research proposal, student resume, faculty mentor contact information, and student transcripts. Research projects are collaborative efforts with faculty mentors but proposals should ultimately be the work of the student applicant. As an opportunity to highlight research projects and encourage networking within the student scholar community, recipients of the Undergraduate Research Fellowships are required to participate in the 2016-17 OSGC Scholarship and Fellowship Program Guide Page 7 of 10

annual Student Symposium hosted by the OSGC. The symposium is hosted at the Oregon State University campus during the fall or winter term. Seniors who will complete their degree programs before the next Student Symposium will create a poster for the event to be presented in their absence during the following year. Required Application Materials OSGC Undergraduate Research Fellowships Research Proposal Cover page plus a project description of no more than 4 pages (12 pt, single-spaced). See Proposal Guidelines at the end of this section. Student Resume Include relevant employment, education, and extra-curricular activities. Resume should also provide current contact information including email, phone, and mailing address. Letter of Support and Faculty CV The student s faculty mentor must provide a letter that outlines their ability to mentor and guide the student s research. During the application process you will be asked to provide contact information for your faculty mentor. Upon submission of your application this individual will receive an email requesting their letter of support and CV along with instructions on how they are to be submitted. The due date for the letter of support and CV is May 20, 2016. Academic Transcript A PDF version of your academic transcript must be submitted with your online application. Unofficial transcripts from your college or university website are acceptable. RESEARCH PROPOSAL 1. COVER SHEET Please provide name, contact information (including email address), project title, and a project abstract of 200 words. 2. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The project description is not to exceed 4 typed, 12 pt font, single-spaced pages. The description should be organized around the following points: a. Purpose: Explain the objectives of the project, giving the basic ideas, problems or questions to be examined, and indicate in a general way how these will be explored and developed. b. Significance: 1. Describe the contribution this project can be expected to make to your field of study. If appropriate, mention both specific and technical contributions as well as the more general significance of dealing with these particular ideas and problems. 2. Indicate the contribution this project will make to the development of your abilities as a scholar/student. 3. Demonstrate how your project relates to the NASA vision and aligns with one or more Mission Directorate. 4. Indicate the significance of this research in relation to the faculty mentor s area of study. c. Plan of Work: Give a clear and detailed plan of work on this project, including an expected timetable of what is to be done, when, and where. An adequate description should be given to any special methods, procedures, and experiments to be employed. A project budget may be included but is not required. d. Expected Results: Indicate as specifically as possible what results can reasonably be anticipated from this project. Examples include the following: Will certain hypotheses be validated or rejected? Will new material be brought to light? Will new methods be tested? Will the project result in public presentations, journal articles, or a book? It is expected that both during the project and at its completion the applicant will review and evaluate the progress and success of the project on the basis of the Project Description? STUDENT RESUME Please include full contact information on your resume. Resume should also include any courses, hobbies, and experience related to the research you propose. FACULTY MENTOR INFORMATION As a part of your application your faculty mentor must provide a letter that describes and outlines their ability to mentor and guide your research. As a part of your application you will be asked to provide contact information for your faculty mentor. Upon submission of your application this individual will receive an email requesting their letter of support and CV along with instructions on how they are to be submitted. The due date for the letter of support and CV is May 20, 2016. ACADEMIC TRANSCRIPT Transcripts may be unofficial and should include record of the courses in which you are currently enrolled. Qualified applications will be reviewed by a diverse selection committee who will make recommendations for funding based on stated review criteria (see below). Preference may be given to women and individuals from underrepresented groups in the STEM fields. Review Criteria Applications are ranked based on the following criteria: Academic achievement STEM related career goals Direct relation to NASA vision and alignment with one or more of NASA mission directorates Strength of recommendations Strength of research proposal (if applicable) Other Requirements Award recipients agree to: Notify OSGC of any changes in mailing address, e-mail address, or telephone number for purposes of progress reports. Grant permission to release and/or publish requested recipient information to NASA or other appropriate parties. Include the following text in all publications resulting from funded work supported in part through funding from NASA / Oregon Space Grant Consortium, grant NNX15AJ14H. Undergraduate Research Fellowship recipients agree to participate in the annual Student Symposium. All other award recipients are invited to attend and are strongly encouraged to participate.
