Aldworth School Message from the Headteacher Welcome to our annual summer newsletter which provides you with a sample of activities and events that have taken place at Aldworth. One of the highlights was a visit from Nigel Atkinson, The Lord- Lieutenant of Hampshire, who formally opened the refurbished Winchester Building. The school site is looking really impressive and effectively future-proofs us during these financially uncertain times. Head Boy and Head Girl We have completed the process for appointing our senior students and they are: Head Girl: Axelle Holman Head Boy: Tajwar Ahmed Deputy Head Girl: Daisy Hursey Deputy Head Boy: Milan Mistry Congratulations to them and again the quality of the applications for these roles was extremely high which made the decision making all the more difficult! They will be supported by the senior prefects and prefects. My thanks go to Miss E Smith, Miss Kemp, Miss Payne and Mrs Teague who were all involved in the process. Staffing This is the time of year that we sadly have to say goodbye to some staff and happily welcome new staff to our school community. As our school has continued to grow over recent years it is inevitable that there are changes at the end of each academic year. Starting with teaching staff and within the Mathematics department we say goodbye to Mr Gaunt (Head of Maths since 2011) who has secured a post in a school closer to home. Mrs King is retiring, however before doing that she is going to teach Science for half a term before taking up a Cover Supervisor role here. Mr Mountain (Assistant Headteacher) will become Head of Maths and Mr Jewell will be joining us from another local school. 2
www.aldworth.hants.sch.uk Within the English Department we say goodbye to Mrs Wheeler, Mr Kahl and Mrs Saunders. Miss Cook also leaves us after a two year contract, to return to Canada. Joining the department are Mr Denning and Miss Green. Mrs Weight joins as Leading Practitioner for English and Mrs Poulton (our new Assistant Headteacher) will teach within English. Miss Hill will be Acting Head of English whilst Mrs Tucker remains on maternity leave. Mr Harwood is leaving us as Head of Science to take up an equivalent role in another school and Mr Warrington leaves us as he has relocated to another part of the country. Miss Shaw is taking up a role in another school in Reading. Whilst Miss Kent will become Acting Head of Science we have a number of staff joining us: Mrs Ballard, Mrs Brandom, Mr Brown (former Head of Physics here), Mr Butcher (PE & Science) and Dr Collins. We say goodbye to Miss Watson, who is currently Deputy Curriculum Leader for PE and she hopes to relocate to Cornwall. Mr Cooper also leaves us and has been a PE teacher for a year but prior to that was a cover supervisor for two years. Miss Lester joins the department along with Mr Voce (PE & Humanities). Performing Arts will see some changes this year as Mrs Jonathan leaves us after being at Aldworth for a number of years as Head of Performing Arts and her successor is Mrs Kimber who will also be joined by Mr Cole. Within Humanities we say goodbye to Mrs Wallwork, many of you will know her through the Battlefields experience, and Mr Edwards who returns to Canada. Mrs Thomas will be joining this curriculum area. Miss Ronkainen (Art) is leaving us to go and live in Germany and we will be joined by Miss Newell. Other teaching staff joining us are: Ms Lemoine (MFL), Mr Stafford (ICT), Mr Watkinson (Technology) and Dr Yorke (Science; she will join us after half term). Miss Hornby, one of our Learning Support Assistant s, will be training to become an English teacher. Joining our support staff team are: Mrs Berwick, Miss Pearce and Mrs Carver all as Learning Support Assistants. In addition, Mrs Haynes will join us as an Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA). We look forward to welcoming all of our new colleagues in September. For those who are leaving we wish them well and thank them for their contribution to our school community. As you will see we are able to maintain our current staffing levels; this is partly due to the healthy number of students on roll and partly due to our stable finances. We are fully staffed for September with effective and well qualified staff. I am pleased to report that our new Year 7 cohort is oversubscribed and four of our five year groups are at their maximum capacity of 200. 3
Aldworth School Message from the Headteacher cont... Congratulations Naomi Clifton in Year 7 and Ella Warwick in Year 8, along with their dance group at Basingstoke Academy of Dancing was successful in being selected to represent team England in the Dance World Cup 2017 Fusion Ballet section in Offenburg, Germany. It was a fantastic experience with 42 countries participating in the competition and coming 4th they helped gain points for England on the leader table. Well done girls for an amazing achievement. Thank you Thank you to all staff, students, parents and governors for your continued support again this year. We wish all students who sat examinations every success in the summer. I hope you have the opportunity to enjoy the summer holidays with your families and I look forward to working with you again in the next academic year. www.aldworth.hants.sch.uk Messages from the Deputy Headteachers As we approach the end of term I thought I would update you on some of the environmental developments that have taken place this year and some of our planned work over the summer. As well as our annual maintenance of buildings which includes cleaning, painting and minor repairs and replacements, we have made some significant improvements to the school environment and have more to come such as:- Portsmouth Block windows and doors The front elevation of Portsmouth block has had all the old windows and doors replaced. This is a significant improvement in the quality of the fittings and also helps to improve noise reduction, ventilation and heat retention. Winchester Hall Following the redevelopment of Winchester Block we have improved the quality of the acoustics in the new hall by installing a new acoustic ceiling and wall tiles. Environmental Garden Thanks to the amazing support of Sainsbury s who are currently working in partnership with the school on several initiatives. One such project has been to overhaul the environmental garden. Sainsbury s staff worked incredibly hard with a small group of students to clear and improve the environmental garden for students to use at breaks and after school. New student outdoor area - Over the summer we are planning to make a significant change to our playground space to enable students to have more space in the heart of the school. This means that the internal car park will become a pedestrian area with a canopy and picnic tables and cars will be parked on part of the top playground. We are currently in the process of arranging the canopy installation and hope that this will be in place during the Autumn term. The top playground is a large area which is not used extensively. We will therefore section off a small part of this area for staff and visitor cars. Long Jump Pit We are renovating our rather old pit and runways over the summer holiday. I hope that these and many other projects have helped Aldworth students in their development and opportunities. Aldworth School Messages from the Deputy Headteachers It is astonishing how quickly this academic year has gone by, I wish the Year 11 s leaving us to go onto College, Apprenticeships and other destinations the best of luck. They have been a great year group, excellent role models for the younger pupils and ambassadors for the school generally. I sincerely hope all their hard work pays off and they all get the results they deserve. It is now time for the current Year 10 s to step up and become the senior year group in the school. I hope they make the best of their holidays, and I urge them to come back ready to hit the ground running with a positive mind-set. It really is still all to play for, we have high expectations of how well they can do. We will be supporting them with mentoring and study skills workshops, it is amazing how a renewed focus can boost grades. They have the opportunity to achieve whatever they want, and I know parents will be on board with supporting them in making the most of themselves. I also wish the best of luck to the Year 9 s who will be starting their new courses in September. The Year 9 options process is done and I am hopeful everyone will have the course that is right for them. Letters have gone home to Year 9 parents detailing this. I am always happy to talk to parents with any queries or concerns so please contact me. With Years 7 and 8 moving up there will be some changes that you may notice. More subjects will be 'set' and students may well be in different groups at the start of the new term. The aim of this is to make sure every pupil can progress at the best rate possible for them. www.aldworth.hants.sch.uk Aldworth Governing Body My son joined Aldworth School last September and shortly after I volunteered to join the Governing Body after hearing they were in need of some IT skills. In my professional life I work as an IT Enterprise Architect, which in simple terms means I typically work with medium to large companies, turning their "business needs" into IT solutions that deliver value for money. During 2016 the school had some unplanned but necessary IT expenditure and it was felt some additional Governor insight would be beneficial. After staffing, IT expenditure is often the next highest cost, so it's important to ensure the school's money is being well spent; especially with school budgets being stretched year on year. In February we created an IT Strategy Group to guide the school's decision making in this space, with a particular focus on larger investments. This month we discussed three key projects the school is looking into; upgrading Wi-Fi facilities across the campus, moving from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and driving down the cost of printing. We will also resurrect the school's "IT Forum" which will be a vehicle for staff and students (through the Student Council) to discuss their thoughts about IT across the school; what works well, what could be done better, what ideas could improve teaching and learning and so on. In essence we are striving to provide the right IT, at the right price to help students achieve their maximum potential. Aldworth School Mad Hair Day Minibus On Friday 3 February, a team of Year 10 students from Aldworth School supported St Michael s Hospice Mad Hair Day by taking part in two school assemblies at Winklebury Infant and Junior Schools. Mad Hair Day is a fun campaign where schools and hairdressers across Hampshire can let their hair down all in the name of charity. The aim of the assemblies was to give the children a few ideas on how to style their own hair on Mad Hair Day on Friday 10 February. Each school had 6 volunteers and the Aldworth students worked both individually and in pairs to style their volunteer s hair. The students worked really well under a bit of pressure as they only had about 10 minutes to work their magic, which is not a long time to create a masterpiece. There was a lot of back combing and bands being used along with feathers, pipe cleaners and ribbon. There was also hair mascara and glitter gel used to create unique and fun hairstyles. While all this was happening the audience were able to look on and shout out encouragement and sing along to the music being played. All the children enjoyed the assembly and on speaking to the Aldworth students they all enjoyed the experience. They were all a little nervous beforehand but once we had done both schools they wanted to do more. Mrs Stratton 8
www.aldworth.hants.sch.uk Library News This term we have taken part in the Hampshire Book Award. This has involved students reading 6 pre-selected books over a 12 week period, reviewing them and subsequently voting on their winning choice. This event is aimed at Year 8 and I would like to thank Alice Masters, Briony Merriman, Rhiann Gillman, Jessica Ludlow, Sai Nallapareddy, Max Gatford, Luke Chinappen, Onur Ashakhasanov, Ben Pope and Ellie Potts for taking part in this event. Miss Hill also supported the students throughout and accompanied us to the final. They conducted themselves impeccably at the Final Voting Discussion meeting held at The Vyne School and were a credit to Aldworth School. This event was attended by approximately 90 students from various schools across the North Hampshire region. After simultaneous voting by other schools across Hampshire, the winner was announced as River of Ink: Genesis by Helen Dennis. Copies of all of the shortlisted books are now available in the Library. Aldworth School subscribes to an online daily newspaper called The Day which is aimed at secondary school children. This can be accessed from school or home at www.theday.co.uk. Login details will be available in student planners from September. This publication contains many different news items and topical discussion points. As part of our subscription to the Hampshire School Library Service, we have a subscription to echalk; an online learning and revision resource. The website has various activities and games across all areas of the curriculum. It can be accessed by visiting www.echalk.co.uk. I would like to say a big thank you to my team of pupil librarians who, as always, have been a tremendous help. We also say goodbye to the Year 11 librarians and wish them all the best for the future. Aldworth School Drama News The Drama department has had a very busy and productive year! In the autumn term we were busy preparing for our school production of Annie with the Music department this was a fantastic production with many students taking part. Well done to all those students who took part in this production, both on and off stage! We have also run several trips this year, including taking 60 students to the Haymarket Theatre to see the Blackeyed Theatre s production of Frankenstein in September. The following month we took another 60 KS4 Drama students to see The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time at London s Gielgud Theatre. The students used this production to write theatre reviews, which was part of their coursework. We have also been busy behind the scenes starting to prepare for our Performing Arts trip to New York City in February 2018 we are all very excited about this fabulous opportunity for the 28 students that are coming with us! 10
www.aldworth.hants.sch.uk It is always sad for us to say goodbye to our Year 11 Drama students who have given so much to the department over their five years at Aldworth. They had the opportunity in March to work with local actor Charlie Sanderson, who worked with each group on their exam performance. The students found these workshops really beneficial in helping them prepare for the final exam. They also performed their exam pieces to an audience of family and friends and it was lovely to see so many parents supporting the students. We wish the students every success with their results and their future courses. This year we have also run a KS3 Drama club which has really grown in popularity over the year. This started off being run by Alex Dawes in Year 11, and has now been taken over by Ryan Gaul and Hayleigh Pogmore in Year 9. They are doing a fantastic job of running this club and have roughly 20 students attending every Tuesday. The activities include drama games, improvisations and lots of other activities. Kimberley Smith in Year 7 has attended this year and she says it s really fun because Ryan and Hayleigh keep everyone on track and we have started rehearsing a play which they have written. I really enjoy it and I would recommend it to anyone! Thank you to all the parents and students who continue to support the Drama Department. Miss Crocker 11
Aldworth School Wellbeing Room Project A small group of students in Years 8 and 9 took part in a project in order to create a Wellbeing room for students to use should they wish to. After completing their initial research by visiting a school in Reading and discussing their ideas and thoughts back in the classroom, the students were then able to get started on the practical side of the project. This involved choosing furniture and a colour scheme for the room, going out with staff in the school minibus to collect the chosen furniture and other features such as a radio and calming lighting and then actually decorating the room itself. The students then prepared the walls in the room by sanding them down and filling any holes with filler before actually applying paint to the walls and arranging the furniture in the last session. The students also created their own wonderful personalised artwork by making their hand prints on a blank canvas which now hangs proudly on one of the walls in the room. At the end of the project there was a grand opening which was attended by a large crowd and the Headteacher who also had the honour of cutting the ribbon and declaring the room open. The room has been used widely so far by students and staff and the students who created the room can be justifiably proud of their efforts. Mr Lewis Learning Support Department 12
www.aldworth.hants.sch.uk Garden Club The brand new Aldworth Garden Club which started in June 2017 takes place in the Aldworth garden every Wednesday afternoon between 3.00pm and 4.15pm. The club has been set up by Ms Khatun, Mrs Penny and Mr Lewis and is open to any student who wishes to take part. So far the students attending Garden Club have completed the initial tasks of cleaning and organising the green house and weeding and clearing the garden of any loose material. They have also sat down as a group and brain stormed what they would like to achieve with the garden in the future. For instance, future plans for the garden include the students creating their own kitchen garden where they will have a go at growing their own vegetables and herbs and also creating a wildlife garden which would encourage birds and other animals. The students are also working towards the goal of holding their own garden party during 2018 which would not only celebrate the one year anniversary of the very first Garden Club but would also be a time when they will be able to show off all their hard work and success stories over the academic year. The Aldworth Garden Club always needs equipment especially hand trowels and forks as well as seeds and any plants that you may be able to donate so if you have any of these please contact Ms Khatun in the Learning Support Department. Both the students and staff hope that they will be able to produce a garden which is not only beautiful but will be a real asset to the school in general. Ms Khatun, Mrs Penny and Mr Lewis 13
Aldworth School Lego Club Lego Club continues to run every Monday afternoon between 3.00pm and 4.00pm in Room B1.5. During Lego Club children have the opportunity to build anything they wish to and take part in an optional Lego Challenge when they are challenged to make anything from the tallest tower to a boat that can float on water. In Room B1.5 the students and Mr Lewis created a Lego Club display which not only showcases the students own models but also provides a bright and colourful display for the room as well. A number of Lego Club students, as well as staff from the Learning Support Department, went to Legoland as part of Activities day on Friday 14 July. They all had the opportunity to see Lego models on a giant scale and experienced all the many different attractions such as the brand new Ninjargo World which opened in 2017. From its beginnings in October 2016, Lego Club has proven to be a popular addition to the extra - curricular timetable and will continue to do so in the forthcoming years. Mr Lewis and Mrs Wright Salters Festival and had lots of fun. In May Miss Shaw took a group of four Year 8 students to the University of Reading for the Salters Festival of Chemistry. Mrs Jonathan Aldworth s Got Talent! We are delighted that we have had another successful audition period for Aldworth's Got Talent this term. Singers, dancers, magicians and comedians have all tried to wow the audition panel with their acts. After much deliberation we chose the semi -finalists who performed on Monday 10 July at 6.30pm in the Main Hall. The audition panel chose the finalists who will perform on the last assembly of the year!!! The semi-finalists were: Axelle Holman, Hannah Merritt, Adam Smith, Thomas Blissett, Molly Wright, Jessica Teague, Grace Nothnagel, Emily McBrayne, Carenza Cosgrave, Amber Aylott, Lauren Sewell, Mya Graves, Tayla Abbott, George Roberts, Tommy Damiral, Zeus Papayiannis- Batchelor, Isabelle Bone, Hannah Ryan- Culver, Teisha Farley, Hayleigh Pogmore and Molly Finklaire. Aldworth School Dickens Recomposed Over 50 students from Aldworth School have been bringing Dickens' characters to life as part of a unique history and music project, culminating in a multimedia performance. This was an exciting project that two classes of Year 9 students took part in over last term. Hampshire Music Service initiated the project in the Autumn term as part of the Hampshire Chairman s Year of Music with Arts Council England funding. Professor Holly Furneaux of Cardiff University, an advisor for the BBC series "Dickensian", supported the project as well as the Charles Dickens Museum, London, and Alison Willis who is a composer and teacher from Queen Mary s College, Basingstoke. The aim of the project was for the two classes to create multimedia performances focusing on a Dickens character each. The two characters chosen were Miss Havisham, from Great Expectations and Inspector Bucket, from Bleak House, the first literary detective. Our Year 9 students learned about the Dickens characters with help from Professor Furneaux. They visited the Charles Dickens Museum in London and were supported in a number of classroom sessions before working with Alison Willis and myself to compose their own multi-media responses. Taking inspiration from the BBC series, they explored the idea of taking Dickens characters and placing them in a new context. Students composed an amazing soundtrack to their films and students also composed original songs to perform about Miss Havisham. The performance at Milestone 16
www.aldworth.hants.sch.uk Museum, Basingstoke, was a great success with a brilliant attendance of parents and staff. The students have been really creative, from their use of music to their period costumes. Thank you to all involved and the Year 10/11 Drama students for helping along the way. Mrs Jonathan - Head of Performing Arts In this project, we were assigned a character to create a piece of music for. After we visited the museum I understood more about the period and had a better idea of the characters. I started my piece in a jolly major key to show that the Inspector was having a cup of tea at his leisure. I used French horns and clarinets playing short sounds in C major. It then developed into an A minor theme when the story started. - Thomas Blissett Year 9 It was a very long process creating our unique Inspector Bucket piece. We started with a simple motif and chords based on the notes we had been given by the teacher. We took our inspiration from the Dickens Museum, it was full of interesting facts and it was great taking pictures of all the artefacts ready to make the film reel. - Lucy Quillin Year 9 I have managed to learn many different skills in this project. Learning how different instruments sound, new techniques and how to compose and play into music software. I am so grateful that I was chosen to take part, I will remember it for a long time. - Daisy Triner Year 9 In our music we had three sections and included instruments such as guitars and unfamiliar instruments like a bassoon. We created three drones and added a variety of different sounds on the top. Our music has been used to link sections together and for the fire at the end. - Thomas Linder Year 9 Our music was to fit the character of young Miss Havisham, this meant the music had to be hopeful and joyful in a major key. We used clarinets and a piano and created an ostinato effect which faded in and out. It is right at the start of the piece so we are lucky because it stands out from the rest as it follows with a more solemn mood than ours. - Emma French and Cydney Archer Year 9 17
Aldworth School Dickens Recomposed We composed this piece in several stages, portraying the many phases of Miss Havisham s sad life. My particular section is played in the trapped segment, which uses thick layers and a crescendo to build up into the flames scene. When the four trapped pieces were put together they were slightly chaotic and we kept this because it represented Miss Havisham s mental state at the time. We used a repeated motif throughout and the drone acted like glue to keep it altogether. I think I have worked hard on this section and hopefully this will be evident when you listen. - Ethan White Year 9 QMC Model United Nations Day Twelve of our most talented Humanities students represented the school at an event based on the decision making processes of the United Nations. Adopting the principles and priorities of China and New Zealand, our students had to create a resolution and lobby other nations to get their policy passed in the final voting process. This was a challenging and enriching day in which our students excelled; six of them winning additional prizes for their skills in presenting, diplomacy and lobbying. A record number of students fulfilled their leadership stages and were awarded with certificates and their badges in assemblies last week. Mrs Reddy 18
www.aldworth.hants.sch.uk Sensory Garden - Sainsbury s Our garden space is undergoing a dramatic transformation with the help of our business partnership with Sainsbury s. The overgrown space is slowly returning to its former glory and will become a beautiful space for the benefit of many of our students. Well done to the gardening club for doing such a wonderful job! Mrs Reddy Year 8 Learn to Earn Day In our annual survey many students wanted to learn about how to manage money effectively, therefore this term we have been working with Year 8 students on financial management. This enrichment day got our students to consider what success looks like to them, informed them about potential future careers and their starting salaries, and the realistic costs of living based on their potential employment options. Students told me afterwards that It has made me realise that I have to work hard to achieve my goals and dreams, and I now know what is important in my life. Mrs Reddy 19
Aldworth School Year 9 Challenge Day Resilience and respect are key characteristics that we wish to develop in our students and this challenge day focused on working as part of a team on three separate activities, where a successful outcome had to be achieved in a fixed period of time. Students had to use their business skills to create and brand a new fruit smoothie to rival the market leaders, create a look based on the theme of fantasy, and work on some STEM based activities, which included making a tower out of marshmallows and spaghetti! It was a great day where many Year 9 students embraced working outside of their comfort zone and were rewarded for demonstrating their respect for others. Aldworth School Girls Basketball Aldworth School hosted its annual invitation basketball tournament on Sunday 1 July 2017. It was the thirty-third year of the event which first took place in 1985. The five teams participating included Castors Club from Braine L Alleud in Belgium, Basingstoke s twin town. In an excellent, competitive competition, Aldworth finished second behind Castors, who beat the hosts by 32 points to 19 points in the deciding game. Castors won all of their matches, and Aldworth beat Farnborough Phantoms 35-20, Culm Valley Comets from Devon 27-13 and TNS Ashford from Kent 40-24. The final positions were; Physical Education 1st Castors, Braine L Alleud 2nd Aldworth Arrows (Hosts) 3rd Farnborough Phantoms (Hampshire) 4th Culm Valley Comets (Devon) 5th TNS Ashford (Kent). All players received certificates and medals. Amber Clare received an individual trophy as she was voted the best offense player in the tournament. The day before, Aldworth Arrows played Castors in the annual Twinning Challenge match. This was a full length game involving the same teams as played in the tournament. The Castors team is Belgian Champion at that age group so it was expected to be a tough game for the Aldworth team. However, the girls rose to the occasion and led for much of the game before finally losing by just three points 56-59. 22 Mr Dimond (Team Coach) Girls Basketball - Belgium Trip The Aldworth Basketball team recently travelled to Braine L'Alleud, Belgium to play a twinning match and in a tournament at the Castors Club. We left Basingstoke at 5.00am on Saturday 29 April and arrived in Braine L'Alleud at 2.00pm. We played the Twinning Challenge game against Royal Castors at 3.00pm. The Castors team are Belgian Champions. Aldworth Arrows lost the game by 97pts to 72pts but we were delighted by our performance and to score so many points against our illustrious opponents in a full length match. We were then treated to a restaurant meal by our hosts before going to watch Castors senior women's team play away at Willebroek in the Belgian League Playoff final. Castors won to become Belgian Champion for the fourth season in a row! On the Sunday, Aldworth then played in a tournament in Braine L'Alleud. This involved eight teams including us, the hosts, five other teams from around Belgium, and one from France. The teams were drawn in two pools of four. Suspiciously, Arrows were in the same
www.aldworth.hants.sch.uk group as Castors and played them in the first game. These were shortened games of two periods of 15 minutes. As expected, Arrows lost, but tactically used all of their players to save energy for the other matches. Aldworth Arrows then went on to beat the three other Belgian teams in the pool to finish second in that table. This progressed Arrows into the cross-over semi-final to play the winners of the other pool. In an extremely tight game Aldworth won by six points to reach the final and to play Castors again for the third time. The energy used in reaching the final meant Arrows tired quickly and Castors were comfortable winners. However, we were delighted to finish as Tournament runners-up in such a prestigious competition. The Aldworth team arrived back in Basingstoke at 1.00am on the Monday morning. Sport Leaders The Summer term Mr Dimond (Team Coach) Sport Leaders cohort have just about finished their final sessions in the Primary Schools. Once again they have all done a fantastic job and will achieve the Level 1 Aldworth Sport Leaders qualification. We went into Kempshott Junior School and ChalkRidge Primary School and they all taught different sports to the young pupils. They all developed their confidence, leadership and organisational skills. Aldworth School Physical Education Sport Ambassadors A big thank you to the Year 11 Sport Ambassadors who have helped, organised and run many clubs and events over this year. Without them many things could not have taken place or have been run so well. They have been a credit to Aldworth School and our PE Department and I wish them all the best in the next stage of their lives. The new Sport Ambassadors have applied and will be interviewed to decide our next cohort for the start of the year in September. Miss Watson Year 7 Rounders The team have had a smashing start to the rounders season and currently stand undefeated. So far they have played against the following schools: Everest, Cranbourne, Costello and Brighton Hill, winning 61/2-10, 11/2-111/2, 5-9 and 5-51/2 respectively. The girls amazing success has definitely been supported by the older years, having trained with them since before half term has definitely paid off. The girls are a pleasure to watch, they are not only extremely talented but also play with integrity and sportsmanship. There is no reason that this winning streak should not continue, we are planning on winning the league! Team: Jessica Beacon, Grace Besemer, Chloe Garlinge, Arina Gurung, Freya Jones, Jessica Lawrence, Leah McNab, Rosina Pettican and Michaela Wells Miss Wijeratne Year 8 Rounders Miss Watson, Miss Mays and myself had big expectations for the team having won the league last year, fortunately the girls did not disappoint. They played well and gained some brilliant victories with only one (very close) defeat to Costello! This strong performance left the team in the same position as two other 24
www.aldworth.hants.sch.uk schools (Bishop Challoner and Costello) and placed them second overall losing out to Challoner on overall rounders scored difference. The girls have now been invited to attend the Hampshire Games where they will face many other winning schools in the county at a whole day rounders tournament event. So far the team have won all of their matches apart from one, which they drew, and we are so proud of them. Miss Mays Year 10 Rounders The team trained and competed against others schools in the Basingstoke League during the first half term of summer. They managed to beat some teams. The team placed 6 th overall out of 8 schools. Well done to Chosen Lamont who got nominated so many times as Players Player that she came runner up in the whole of the District. Aldworth School District Athletics What a brilliant day we had for the annual District Athletics at Down Grange with the sun shining and over 65 competitors from Aldworth School. Many students managed to place in the top 3 with some Year 7 and 8 athletes going through to the next stage of the event for Hampshire. The PE staff selected one girl and one boy from KS3 and KS4, they had their photo displayed on the Student of the Month board in the PE corridor. They designed an eye catching banner and paraded around the track at the Opening Ceremony before competing in 8 rounders games against the winners of each Hampshire District. Miss Payne The girls managed to win two of their games and were very close to more victories with only a few rounders in it. The majority of the girls got players player at some point in the games with Mrs Dawe commenting that Arina Gurung and Sophie Ashcroft stood out in particular for their skilful batting and fielding. The girls behaved very well and should be very proud of themselves for getting through and competing against the very best in Hampshire. A big thank you to Mrs Dawe for being with them and supporting them at the Games.
