COLLEGE NEWS No 4 www.bridgehouse.org.za 3 February 2017 Art News One highlight of an action packed assembly last Friday was the presentation to the school of one of Jono Dry s drawings. This was the direct result of the exhibition last year which focused on the work of sculptor, William Sweetlove. The organisers of this exhibition (parent, William Vaesen s CTAA) donated ten percent of sales to the school to be spent on artwork included in the exhibition. Jono Dry (who was at Bridge House until his Grade 10 year) was one of the artists and it made sense to commission a drawing from him that was symbolic of one of the ways that we see education. We were very fortunate in that Jono agreed to spend the rest of the day with us. Dave Fuller and Naomi Smit (Art Department) are focusing on drawing skills this term so this visit was particularly fortuitous as he was able to pass on his knowledge to interested students and allowed them to see that, with dedication and hard work, it is possible to make a success as an artist. Jono is currently enjoying recognition internationally and so is an excellent role model for aspirant artists. We are very grateful to CTAA and to Jono Dry and look forward our continued association with both of them. NEWSFLASH: We are currently in negotiation with CTAA to hold another exhibition at Bridge House. Huguenot House out and about! On Sunday 29 January, the Huguenot House boarders were treated to a morning of walking and swimming at the Berg River Dam. Clear skies and crystal water made for a wonderfully revitalizing outing on a warm Sunday morning and the prefect escape from the bustle of school life. They explored the reed beds, splashed around in the rock pools and lazed in the morning sun. Thanks to Mr and Mrs Backhouse for accompanying them in this memorable outing! Erica House at Kirstenbosch On Sunday 29 January, Ms Kotze accompanied Erica House boarders on an outing to Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. It was a beautiful, sunny day, perfect for long walks and enjoying a delicious picnic in the pristine gardens. One of the highlights was walking along The Boomslang tree canopy walkway. Everyone enjoyed the spectacular views of the mountains and gardens. Another highlight was visiting the Erica Garden, the indigenous flower with which we share our name. Many photos and selfies were taken and it was a fun day enjoyed by all. A special thank you goes to Ms Kotze for arranging the outing.

Welcome Function for Parents who are new to the School Wednesday 22 February The Parents Association extends a warm invitation to new parents of the school this year, to attend a casual cheese and wine on Wednesday 22 February at 18h00 on the Theatre verandah (field side). This will be an opportunity to meet other new parents, PA Committee members and the school management. You should have received an email about this. Please RSVP Jenny Jones jenjon@bridgehouse.org.za by Wednesday 15 February if you are able to attend. We understand that those of you who are boarder parents and live too far away will most likely not be able to attend but we hope to meet you at another occasion in the future. The Parents Association Committee 60 Minutes with the Heads Monday 27 February In the interests of good and improving communication between school and parents, Mike Russell and Marc Barrow, Heads of the College and Prep respectively, will host the termly 60 Minutes with the Heads meeting, on Monday 27 February in the Theatre, from 08h00 to 09h00. In order to help the Heads prepare properly for this, please e-mail any questions or concerns (of a general nature) you may have, to PA@bridgehouse.org.za by or on Monday 20 February. The PA has kindly offered to bundle these into a folder and forward them to the Heads, who will then prepare responses to the matters raised, and e-mail out the agenda. Parents interested in these agenda items will be welcome to come along and participate in the conversation. Please note that any issues mailed to PA@bridgehouse after that closing date will not be on the agenda for this meeting, and will either be replied to in the interim, or carried over to the next 60 Minutes in the third term. The rules for 60 Minutes are simple: it's a constructive and collaborative initiative; matters raised and mailed through need to be of a general nature; if deemed a better option to do so, the Heads can respond directly by e-mail to any issues before the meeting; there will be honest and frank responses and discussion around the topics on the agenda; questions from the floor need to be only about the agenda issues: no "surprises" and no "general" please! giving the Heads some preparation time is simply so that if figures and data are required for an answer, or if someone else's expertise is needed, there is an opportunity to gather this and give full answers (and perhaps put it into a presentation of sorts); time: strictly 60 minutes for the forum, so that it's short and sharp and those attending can plan their morning. Mr Mike Russell
