Murchison Area School 15th September 2017 61 Waller Street P O Box 23 Murchison 7049 Phone 03 5239 072 enquiries@murchison.school.nz Term 3 School Wide Value Honesty Kia ora, Moghrey Mie, This week we have had students white water rafting on the local waters. This was organised by Miss Waite and was a great opportunity to gain some experience in this area whilst also stretching some personal goals. We have so many opportunities for our students at school, on Wednesday we had the pleasure of the New Zealand Dance Company perform and then take questions from our whole school. I was amazed at the talent on display and so glad to have them perform in little old Murchison Our students really enjoyed this opportunity and asked many quality questions as well. We have school photos on Wednesday of next week. Please contact the office if you have not received your envelope regarding this. We are also hosting a Brainwave Trust Aotearoa talk on Saturday in the Library and it would be great to see people there. We are building up to the end of term and have a few important dates to put into your diary. The Murchison Community Spring Flower Show is on in the last week and our primary classes are busy preparing artwork for display. On the last day of term we have our Celebration assembly at 2pm, on the evening of Wednesday 27 th we have the Year 7/8 play at our local theatre and on Thursday the 28 th our Kapa Haka Competition group will be performing in the West Coast Festival in Westport. On Monday of this week our group of 25 Kapa Haka students performed at Maruia School and then also watched Maruia and Sacred Heart perform their entries. It is so positive to see our school community fully engage in this crucial area of bi-culturalism and all the related learning that goes with it. Vicki Thomson has been doing a great job both with this group and also now the whole school take part in Te Reo and Tikanga every single Friday. We keep our sporting exploits on the up as well with more volleyball in the Westport Adult leagues, more senior inter-house basketball and the announcement of a Year 7-10 tournament against Tapawera Area School on November 23 rd. I have received our school staffing numbers for 2018 and this will allow us to continue to increase provision in school, widen choices in the senior school, maintain smaller class sizes in the primary area and continue to provide additional support where required. This is an exciting time for our school and it is great to have the opportunity to lead these new initiatives. Here is hoping for some good weather to allow Chris Parkinson to continue with the very good work he is doing with our grounds and also to allow us to get the school swimming pool ready for the start of next term. 2017 Practice NCEA Exams Year 11-13 Students Practice exams for our school delivered subjects will be held in Week 9 and 10 of this term. These are following on from the practice exams for Te Kura delivered subjects which were held in Week 7. These exams are a good opportunity for students to assess their progress towards the external exams at the end of the year. They also give students and teachers some targeted next learning steps to work on. Practice exam results may be used as a piece of evidence (but not the only evidence) as part of the derived or emergency grade process if a student is unable to sit an exam in November. The number of practice exams a student will sit will depend on the students individual programme of learning in each of their subjects. All students are expected to be at school during practice exams and those not sitting a particular exam will be working in the Distance Learning Room. A notice has been given to each student with more details, including which exams that they will be sitting and when these are taking place. Please contact Amy Stewart or the relevant subject teacher if you have any queries.
This Saturday, 12-2 at the school library. We have a handful of seats left so don't miss out! We don't get many events like this in Murchison and it really is an awesome opportunity to discover some invaluable info about what's going on in those little brains...and it's amazing stuff! Everyone welcome. Coffee and cake provided. $5 entry.
