Schnabel 1 JP SCHNABEL PREFECT 2017/2018
Schnabel 2 Dear Students and Prefect Panel, In the midst of summative season, with AP exams upcoming, and a pending ACT score; it would be safe to say that I was stressed. Although, as I crammed to catch up on missed homework over the weekend in the bus ride back from lacrosse in Rochester, I couldn t help but think about one, and one thing only Prefect applications. Even though I had already finished my cover letter in anticipation of the busy spring schedule, its content did not feel authentic to me. For some reason, talking about the gates of St. Andrew s or my first day at SAC seemed cliché and meaningless in the context of my own personal goals - I scratched the copy. I wanted my cover letter to be translucent and organic, a true look into why I want to become Prefect and why I think I am capable. My motive for writing this came from our headmaster, Kevin McHenry, in a Monday morning assembly when he defined what constitutes an Andrean. Still, this idea was largely unbeknownst to me and I could not come to a simple conclusion for something so subjective. So I turned to the teachers on the bus ride back from Rochester with me: Mr. Madill, Mr. Morrissey and Mr. Commisso, and asked for their experienced view on the ideal Andrean. Judging off their careers at St. Andrew s, they were confidently able to describe an Andrean as someone who knows when to work hard, as well as when to take a step back and relax. Someone who is empathetic towards those who surround him, but also is ready to step in and take action. Someone who shows respect to all, regardless of the circumstance. Finally, someone who is resilient and gritty enough to persevere through tough times in order to achieve their goals. Articles published in Forbes, the Wall Street Journal, and the Huffington Post commonly find that these characteristics are also evident in great leaders. This makes me believe that there is an underlying connection between being Andrean and being a leader, and that the best Prefects are the best Andreans. I am inspired to become an ideal Andrean, a role model for the rest of the school. I believe that my intangible values and experience gained through my extensive involvement at St. Andrew s will assist me greatly in the greatest leadership position at SAC in pursuit of becoming a model Andrean. While I cannot list individually each one of my achievements at St. Andrew s, I can highlight that through my academic, athletic, and co-curricular involvements I will serve as a model Andrean in the objectives as Prefect. At this point, I could not tell you what specifically I would do as Prefect. Instead, I can guarantee that the hard work, grit, empathetic, and resilient characteristics I have developed after years of balancing commitments and investing myself 100% into everything I do will persist in my Prefect position as I push myself to become the model Andrean. Best regards,
