Croatian Journal of Education,Vol:15; No.2/2013, pages: 543-550 International Scholarly Conference From the Strange to the Wondrous Slavonski Brod, April 18 20, 2013 The Croatian Association of Researchers in Children s Literature initiated a nation-wide, whole-year event Hlapić 2013 which is manifested through exhibitions, plays, workshops, films thus celebrating 100 years of the first edition of The Strange Adventures of Hlapić the Apprentice by the author Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić. The central event in the 100th anniversary of Hlapić is certainly the International Research Conference From the Strange to the Wondrous under the auspices of the Croatian President, dr. Ivo Josipović. The Conference was organized in two parts: the first part, preconference event, was the actual Ceremony which took place in the Atrium of the Palace of the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences on April 17, 2013 after which the Conference relocated to Slavonski Brod where the working part of the Conference lasted from April 18 20, 2013. The Ceremony part hosted the plenary by Professor Dubravko Jelčić and Hans Heino Ewers director of the Institute for Research on Children s Literature in Frankfurt on Main. A short recital about the family and social circumstances by Ivana Brlić- Mažuranić in 1912 the year when the Strange Adventures of Hlapić the Apprentice was created ended the programme. The recital was performed by 4 th year students from the Academy of Dramatic Arts under the leadership of Associate Professor Boris Svrtan. The Conference received 67 papers which testify to the rather big interest of scholars researching children s literature and the issues relating to Šegrt Hlapić. The work has actively been present for 100 years not only in children s literature but in Croatian art and culture, continuously drifting between the most significant literary and cultural reservations: even before its publication it had its place in the arena of political clashes, the issue of appropriateness during the communist role model time, banishment into fantasy literature, the issue of the confrontation of the literary character and its transformations through media, its position within the history of Croatian children s literature. All of that along with numerous other aspects which shed new light on The Strange Adventures of Hlapić the Apprentice: from feminist interpretations to quantitative linguistic analyses inspired participants of the Conference. 547

News and Events / Novosti i događaji The Conference had two plenary speakers: Vinko Brešić who talked about the history of the critical edition of The Complete Works of Ivana Brlić Mažuranić in the presentation From Text to Context: A Critical Reading of the Works by Ivana Brlić- Mažuranić, while Bettina Kümmerling Meibauer talked about the new idea of childhood at the beginning of the 20 th century and her relationship with modernist art movements in the work: Childhood and Modernist Art. The Conference was organized in parallel sessions on the 18 th and 19 th of April. On April 20 th the Conference participants visited the Brlić family library in the house of Zdenka Benčević, the Franciscan monastery library and the Brlić family summer house Brlićevac. The overall mark of the Conference participants that its organization and focus on only one work of Croatian children s literature significantly contributed to the sharpening of research aids and generally enriched Croatian research of children s literature. The Conference was organized by the Croatian Association of Researchers in Children s Literature and co-organizers the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences, the city of Slavonski Brod, Matrix Croatica Slavonski Brod, Croatian Writers Association, and the Croatian Education and Teacher Training Agency. Croatian Journal of Education,Vol:15; No.2/2013, pages: 543-550 Međunarodna znanstvena konferencija Od čudnovatog do čudesnog održana u Slavonskom Brodu 18. - 20. travnja 2013.
