Page 2 Gifted and Talented Screening Katy ISD students in grades 6-8 may be referred now for screening for the 2017-2018 Gifted and Talented (G/T) program. To initiate a referral, parents need to complete a Secondary Parent Checklist, which can be obtained in the counselor s office. Checklists must be completed and returned to the school office by January 10, 2017. Students whose Parent Checklists are not returned by the deadline will not be screened for service for the 2017-2018 school year. The State of Texas requires that various types of measures be used to identify students for gifted programs. In Katy ISD, screening instruments include the Parent Checklist, classroom observations, and standardized tests. The program for secondary students consists of subject specific coursework in math, science, social studies, and language arts. Parents may contact campus counselors, or G/T facilitators, if they have additional questions. Transfer students who were screened in Fall 2016 must wait one full academic year before they may be re-screened. Proclamation 2017 Parent Input Proclamation 2017 includes instructional materials for Career and Technical Education, Languages Other Than English, Algebraic Reasoning, Statistics, AP English Language and Composition, and AP English Literature and Composition. These materials will be implemented during the 2017-2018 school year. Instructional materials under consideration will be on display during business hours (8:00 AM-4:00 PM) for parent and community input at the Education Support Complex from January 9-27, 2017. In addition, instructional materials will be available for review from 5:00PM to 8:00PM on Tuesday, January 10, 2017, Thursday, January 19, 2017 and Thursday, January 26, 2017. After School Academy After School Academy will start on Tuesday, January 17th, 2017, from 2:40-4:20 pm. It will be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from January 17 February 8. Starting on February 14th, ASA will be held only on Tuesdays.

Page 6 Dear Bobcat Parents and Guardians, Makerspace Donations We are in the process of creating a library Makerspace here at MMJH. What is a Makerspace? A Makerspace is an area that allows for creativity and innovation to occur so that students can engage in learning experiences that allow them to make real life connections. Makerspaces provide students with a place to tinker and develop something that may not have been possible to create without a space with resources. We want this experience to be a fun opportunity to expand science, art, engineering, programming, and technology skills for each student. To achieve this goal, we are in need of several items to be donated for our Makerspace. If you are able, we would be appreciative of any donation that you are willing to provide. At this time, we are asking for donations for the following items: Legos (including the green bases) K-Nex Wooden Blocks Pipe Cleaners Elmer s Glue Washi Tape Popsicle Sticks Markers Buttons Yarn Crochet Hooks Duct Tape Masking Tape Felt and Fabric Play dough Gift Wrap Tissue Paper Modeling Clay Ribbon Scrapbook and Construction Paper Modge Podge Newspaper Toothpicks Foam Paint Brushes Scissors Stickers Mason Jars (new item) Glitter (new item) We do not need any more paper rolls at this time. Thanks! If you have any items that you are willing to donate, please either call or drop off the items in the donation boxes inside the front office and the library. We appreciate all that you do each day to support McMeans Junior High.

Page 7 Student ipad Checkout Katy ISD is excited to provide the opportunity for our students to take home a digital device for learning. A student can check out an ipad to use for a school assignment for a one week period, excluding the Winter and Spring Breaks. If a student needs WiFi access, a Hot Spot is also available for checkout for a five day period. The student s parent or legal guardian must first meet with the assistant principal to review the KISD Student/Parent Equipment Use Agreement and sign it along with the student. This document will be kept on file for the current school year. The student will be instructed on proper use and care of the borrowed equipment. Please call the school at 281-237-8000 to set up an appointment. 10 K Reading Challenge Over 75 students have claimed prizes in the 10K Reading Challenge thus far!
