Moved: Phillippa Butt Seconded: Suzanne Lees PRESIDENT S REPORT Presented by Annie Paras, IGOGA president IGOGA Good evening and welcome to the 91st AGM of the Ivanhoe Girls Old Grammarians Association. As this is my first AGM as President I would like to thank the Committee for their work and support this year and I look forward to another exciting year ahead. Following the previous AGM we welcomed a returning Old Girl, Kerrie Haynes, into the post of IGOGA Board Nominee. Kerrie has previously sat in this role as the Committee s representative on the School board and we are delighted to have her representing us once again. As the School celebrated its 110 th birthday we were delighted to take part in the service at St Paul s Cathedral on May 19. Many thanks go to Heather Low, Liz Taylor and Karen Frost for delivering readings on this occasion. It was a beautiful service attended by students and staff both past and present. 1
The two annual golf days were again a success with our Old Girls competing in the Interschool Golf Challenge Cup and the IGOGA Golf Day at Kingston Heath. We would like to thank Joanna Bennett for efforts in organizing the teams each year. The one year reunion of the Class of 2012 was held on Wednesday 28 August. Thank you to Shannon Wilson for her fantastic efforts in getting a record number of attendees to this event! With plenty of chocolate cake and bubbles to go around it was a great night for the girls to catch up on one year post-iggs life. This year was a big year for our twice yearly publication, the GAB, with Rowena Archer our GAB Editor, taking much needed time off to recover from shoulder surgery. As such we cannot give enough thanks to Kristyn Culpepper and the PR team for their assistance in Rowena s absence, also to our secretary Liz Taylor and committee member Philippa Butt for stepping up to take on this mammoth task. We were able to send out both editions in February and September with relatively few hiccups so great work to all those involved! Sadly at the end of 2013 Rowena Archer announced that she would be stepping down from her post on the committee and we would all like to acknowledge her many years of service to the IGOGA and especially for all her amazing work with the GAB. The GAB has also shown increased delivery through email with many of our members opting for electronic copies to be received instead. This helps us on our GAB dispatch evening with fewer envelopes to stuff although if it weren t for our volunteers, including the Year 10 girls, the evenings would still not run as smoothly as they do. The highlight of the year was the 90 th birthday celebration of the IGOGA with our High Tea function held on Sunday 20 October. With magnificent catering provided by the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre and Jam and Cream in Heidelberg Heights the event was a huge success. Many thanks go to Sue Lees and Susan Kent in organizing the program and catering for the day. Also a big thank you goes to Anne Sells for conjuring up yet again another fantastic display of our school s rich history. The success of the High Tea has already spurred us on to thoughts for our 100 th birthday in 2023! Thank you to all the committee for their hard work. The end of the 2013 calendar year wrapped up with the Year 12 Valedictory Service where we once again assisted the Parents and Friends Association with refreshments on the night. Following that was Celebration Night where our annual awards were presented. The end of the school year also brought us to the end our of meetings for 2013 with our Christmas Dinner held at Condotti s in East Ivanhoe and Christmas Cards posted out to all members from the classes of 1923 1963. The beginning of 2014 was awash with sadness with the passing of the School s beloved gardener Mr. Martin Troy. Martin s work with the school spanned over three decades and the news rocked the school community with great force. From this an outpouring of love came with many of our members taking to social media with their own beautiful memories of him during their time at IGGS. A memorial service held on Tuesday 4 February at the Centre Ivanhoe allowed us to reflect and celebrate the life of such a passionate and colourful man. He will never be forgotten. The first assembly of the school year for 2014 saw the presentation, by Heather Low and Shannon Wilson, of the 2014 School Captains and Vice Captain badges. The badges were presented to the following girls: Senior School: School Captain 2014 Gloria Deng Vice Captain 2014 Nikola Fry Junior School: Co-Captains Kate Haslock and Elizabeth Hoye With our first meeting back after the summer break we welcomed the Year 12 representatives from the Class of 2013, Madeleine Rawlinson and Kate Ferrari, onto the committee. We look forward to working with them this year as they prepare for their one year reunion this August. As another year has passed we must acknowledge and thank the people who have supported us through yet another busy year. In particular Heather Schnagl, Anna Aughterson, Kristen Culpepper and all the administration, public relations and maintenance staff from IGGS. We would also like to thank Anne Sells for her tireless work as the School s archivist and for the wonderful photos and publications she organizes from the depths of the storage boxes to display at our many functions. Finally, I would like to thank the entire committee for their support throughout my first year as President and I look forward to another successful year ahead. Your continued enthusiasm and involvement is the reason why, 91 years later we are still running as a committee and I m sure all our members are grateful of this. Annie Paras TREASURER'S REPORT Submitted by Susan Kent, IGOGA Treasurer In 2013, 60 new members were welcomed to our association (2012, 64), with most of their membership s monies transferred to our Life membership account (and a lump sum payment into our Elspeth Dean Award). This remains invested with IGGS. Our current total in this account is $166,493.73, an increase of $1700 from 2012. The interest from 3
this account returned $6,236.68 down $477.74 from 2012 due to declining interest rate. This interest financed the running costs of GAB, the School Captains Badges as well as other items like I.G.O.G.A. sporting endeavours, gifts and awards. We continue to sell the Entertainment Guides, which in 2013 made the association $559, an increase on the previous year. Our social functions which include the cocktail party for the school leavers of 2013 made a loss of $853.27 due to our 90 th birthday celebrations which were funded by the association. Our expenses for 2013 have remained fairly consistent with other years. Our result for the year was -$1015.24, this total includes the $4,000 transfer to our Elspeth Dean Account. Our association continues to fund the Elspeth Dean Award out of our general account, allowing the money invested to continue to grow. The committee decided in 2013 to make a transfer of life membership money to the Elspeth Dean account to continue increasing the amount invested so the award will be self-funding long term. The Elspeth Dean Award grew by $5054.72 in 2013. Our current investment with IGGS is $29,076.12 I would like to propose that this report be accepted as read, and thank Mr Don Sankey for auditing the association s accounts. Hilary Dixon (Class of 1971) as guest speaker Role of community problem solving girls to help girls learn about our history, helped significantly by Anne Sells (Archivist) Staff Reunion (left year group reunions untouched due to feedback received Outstanding VCE results and tertiary placements: Our aim as an open entry School is to enable the girls to achieve their personal best and to perform even more highly than might be expected. All 116 girls who undertook a full program successfully completed their VCE last year. 8 girls or 7% of the year achieved results which places them in the top1% of the state. 15% in the top 2%, 29% in the top5% and 46% in the top 10% of the state highlighting the strength of learning at Ivanhoe Girls It is the progress that each girl makes in her learning that I am most proud of! This has translated into some wonderful tertiary placements: 99% of the girls were offered a tertiary placement in the first round of offers. A clear picture of choice and diversity. Each girl has chosen the tertiary placement that suits her interests and planned career path and not just followed others or a trend. In total they have chosen to study courses in 65 different fields, many of which are combined courses, at 10 different tertiary institutions. Even with Melb Uni only offering a small number of core first degrees, they have chosen a real diversity of courses from aviation/business, marketing and fashion design to architecture, geology and food and nutrition. 67% have gained entry to their first choice and 84% of the Class of 2013 have been offered the tertiary course of their dreams (either first or second choice)! 25% RMIT, 22% Melb Uni, 21% La Trobe, 15% Monash. Enrolments for 2014: Still pretty healthy, despite the lack of confidence in the economy and the very aggressive marketing by coed school. Taking enrolments now for Year 7 2028 (or Class of 2033)! Federal Government Issues: Gonski Funding Review certainly not achieved its aim of one funding model currently there are approx. 42 different models in existence! Also under the model which no one can really explain our funding will only increase at approx.3% (with decreased funding for our indigenous students) which in effect means that it will go backwards. It is also of concern that there is no appetite in Canberra to address obvious anomalies. 5
National curriculum English, Maths, Science and History have been implemented, with phase 2 of Geography and??? in the process. It is important to note that the phased introduction of the new Australian curriculum will not mean the loss of our special/unique programs (National curriculum only 70-80% of time). This is a challenge to teachers as they feel obliged to cover everything yet learning in depth is far more important. My School website recently updated with 2013 school finances, NAPLAN results and growth not one comment received from a parent! Again for us the most important feature is the growth in learning of our students which is both above all schools and so called like schools. Despite significant work being undertaken for the establishment of the Australians Charities and Not-for-Profit Commission now being closed down! Facilities Development: Completed The redevelopment of our pool complex continues with all the wet edge tiling being replaced over the Christmas break as well as the door frames. This was required before we could retile the pool deck itself. The installation process for the new tri generation heating and cooling system continues. Significant works were undertaken to connect all the Marshall Street houses to the integrated fire system and enhance data connections to them. Finished upgrading all the benches in the Science labs. We are commencing the use of 137 Marshall Street Woolley House, with the recent move of the second life uniform shop there and will be followed by other areas. Next steps: Work has finally commenced on the major renovation of the Parish Hall after years of delays in obtaining permits and permission. The contract has been signed for the conversion of Old Senior Library to a tertiary style lecture theatre, stage (which doubles as a classroom) three more classrooms and two additional music rooms as well as a foyer space with tea and coffee facilities for the lecture theatre. As part of these works, a lift is being retrofitted to service both the lecture theatre complex as well as the second and third floors of the Collins wing. This will result in some redevelopment of the current Year 11 Centre and Student Services. The project will conclude with a renovation of the VCE Centres. Works will commence in the final week of this term, with the builders sheds already in place. It is anticipated that the project will be completed in time for the 2015 school year. A staged renovation of the 7-12 Year Level Centres has commenced with new lockers in the Year 7 & 8 Centres with further refurbishment to follow. 6
Second Life Uniform shop already moved to Woolley House, with other areas of Admin to follow. There are another ten years of projects in the planning. Technology: Continues to be a major focus how to utilize most effectively to enhance student learning. Following a detailed evaluation of the pilot program of ipads at Year 8 last year, the BYOD program has been extended to Years 5-9 this year and will continue throughout their senior years for the current Year 9s. All other year levels are warmly invited to BYOD, and a number of Year 10 girls have taken advantage of this. Our new intranet, christened hive by the 2013 Year 8 girls, is fast becoming the learning heart of the School. Students, staff and parents are becoming very familiar with the phrase it s on hive! Development will continue throughout 2014 with the full implementation completed by the end of the year. We are almost ready to launch our parent app, which we have called Parent Link. This will provide all families with password protect information and contact details for the School on their respective mobile devices. This has necessitated a new provider for our website which should also enable a significant redevelopment of our digital presence during 2014. Cooerwull Day: Monday nearest 27 July to celebrate the School s 111 th birthday this year speaker unknown at this stage (HS to ask Kerrie?). Service Awards 30 years for Emily Hui and Susan Kent, 25 years for Mary Connellan and Terry Lawler and 20 years for Rachel Connor and Marie Angele Savoure. International Links: Last year very successful visit form our Japanese sister school in July (here to help celebrate our 110 th birthday together with a number of French exchange students). Art and Hospitality trip in the Sept holidays, which was so over subscribes that we are running a second one in the Term 1 break this year! Over summer Team Ivanhoe trip to Canada (too much time in the medical centre), French exchange trips with two organizations (AFX and Almost French), China trips (longer language one over the summer) at Xuzhou No 1 High school. Currently have scheduled China and Japan trips this year in Term 3 holidays. Strategic: Board adopted our next five year, 2013 2017 strategic plan to improve student learning which has received input form a wide cross section of the School, including parents, staff and students. 7
As leaders in cybersafety, and running sessions for parents, especially helping them to understand the positives for adolescent identity, and the pitfalls and the need to set sensible boundaries for your teenagers on-line access. This work is on-going. One of the first schools in Australia to be an accredited esmart School, an initiative of the Alannah and Madeleine Foundation, and using their framework to further refine our policies and practices. Ivanhoe Girls is well known for our leadership in this area and our students are being sought to present their work with two Year 8 girls presenting at the national AHISA (heads) conference in September last year where they talked about their work in developing year level specific Codes of Conduct. Other parenting seminars by our Counselling team under auspices of Parents & Friends Association. Senior Library hours until 6pm (Mon-Fri) continues to be very successful and continuing. Students: Strong House Competition Ashby victorious (no secret!). Inaugural wellness week full of activities to enhance wellness! A great initiative from our Levels Coordinators and counselling teams and watch out for what they have in mind this year. Heart of Australia Tour and NZ Music Tour. VCE trial exams in third week of Sept. holidays believe is contributing to enhanced results as it enabled more targeted final revision. Year 12 Benefit Concert (for the Y House Foundation, founded by Georgia Retallis in 2010 when she was 16 to provide suitable accommodation for young people needing full time care approx $52K) can t resist the opportunity to encourage you to support the Class of 2014 with their benefit concert on Friday 15 May. Outstanding production of The Crucible together with Alice in Wonderland play and VCE Theatre Studies, The Venetian Twins and invite you to The Wiz at the beginning of May, and Year 5 & 6 musical in October. Wonderful JS Arts Festival Under African Skies. Physics optional camp re flight jointly with Billanook College, challenges stereotypes and also first student to gain her wings through this! Inaugural Urban Camp 20 Year 9s by application with the Brotherhood of St Lawrence. Outstanding team and individual achievements in so many areas skiing (Lees family cup for Cross Country), Kayaking best girls and small school (amazing from a team of 3!), GSV Cross Country won second division (most improved school). CmPS junior team won National prize and now off to USA to represent Australia. 8
Cooerwull Centre for Leadership and Service providing great learning about leadership and service opportunities, especially for students in Years 7-10. The awarding of Service Colours is also now well established, expanded with the awarding of half colours this year as well. Indigenous Students: School is actively supporting links and also students currently have 3 at school, although the new funding model does not support individual students, rather only on a percentage basis which may make this more challenging. Last year s Year 12 graduate did well and earned a place at the University of Melbourne, from where her sister has just graduated (and joined the Police Force). Lovely to be able to welcome back Rose Falla (Coombs, Class of 1991) to be our guest speaker for School Colours. Early last year Ros became the first indigenous magistrate in Victoria. Staff: Are the best asset a school has and need to do everything we can to continue to enhance their skills. Resignation/retirement of Mary Connellan (actually now going to return as our part time Archivist, Sue Lees and Ruth Norcott. Suzanne Bluck will also be retiring at the end of this year and is very part time to assist with the transition of the Registrar s role to Margaret O Keefe who is completing the cycle as Year 12 Coordinator this year. Retirement of Anne Sells at the end of this term. Martin Troy s death. Christine Durham (ex staff and Cooerwull) Victorian Winner of the Senior Australian of the Year and just recently launched her new book, Unlocking My Brain. Still have a number of staff on maternity leave but actually welcomed two back this year but several more to come! Working on an improved feedback process for general (non teaching) staff. Staff Professional Learning: Continues to be a big focus developing the best teachers to be even better is critical to provide the best learning for our students. Hugh amount of effort on ipad and hive training. Commenced our 2013 school year with our professional learning days, with a keynote speaker, Stuart Taylor on Resilience. Our work on formative assessment, i.e. assessment for learning (and modifying your teaching ALPOS, student testing etc continues to be a big part of our big focus this year on assessment to provide students with the best possible feedback on their learning. During her report Heather mentioned that Emilija Olsen was selected to perform her VCE Dance Solo at VCAA s Season of Excellence Top Arts, Kate Ferrari had exhibits in the VCE Top Arts, Charlotte Dawson and Isabella Meister (Arts)were awarded Vice Chancellor Excellence Scholarship for their respective courses at La Trobe University and Monique Lautee (Mechanical Engineering/Industrial Design) was awarded a Vice Chancellor Excellence Monash University Engineering Scholarship 2. GAB Presented by Phillippa Butt, GAB Editor Thank you for everyone s contributions to GAB this year particularly those who have come to dispatch nights and to those who helped edit. A massive thank you must go to everyone who worked on the September GAB, as I was not the editor at this time. I m quite excited to be taking on my new role as GAB editor, and I d like to thank Rowena for all of her time at the helm. Our February issue was printed by the school as Peter Duckworth has closed his printing business down. This change has brought printing prices down which is good. This also means that the school lends us another two sets of eyes for editing which is always helpful. We have also begun a new policy of all new members receiving an egab instead of hard copies unless they specifically request hard copies. So far this has worked well with only a few bounce-back emails. This has also reduced postage costs. In the last GAB we also sent out an Update Your Details form, which allowed current members to choose whether they would prefer hardcopy or the egab. In the last year we have also tried a new, easier to read format which we will continue to work at. I d really like us to include more photos, which, with a move to online distribution, may be more possible. Overall it has been a successful year of change with GAB. I look forward to bringing some new ideas and to another good year ahead. Phillippa Butt 3. ARCHIVES REPORT Submitted by Anne Sells Ivanhoe Girls Grammar School Archivist The Archives has continued to acquire material from all over the school and from old Grammarians and their families. Despite the removal of over 50 boxes to offsite storage space in the room is still very tight. Appraisal and ordering the records takes a great deal of my time. Preparing and packing the boxes into the larger boxes and registering the contents on these larger boxes and on the computer was part of Andrew Summer s role when he could spare time from his 10
university studies. His help was much appreciated. It means that we are up to date at the moment at least with getting all the material on the computer. This excludes of course quite a few boxes of material which are not yet ordered or accessioned. So the work goes on. The popular yearly reunions and anniversaries requiring displays of photographs and memorabilia are a very enjoyable part of the work with much searching out and dating. With the 110 th birthday of the school celebrated this year we set up displays of photographs, dummy models dressed in uniform and memorabilia in cabinets in the Junior School and Senior School Resource centre. A very extensive photographic display was set up in the PAC. The girls of the Community Problem Solving Group gave much of their time to assist with this. they worked very hard to help set it all up with much fetching, carrying and creativity at work. The girls are very pleasant to work with and nothing is too much trouble for them. They are Rachael Pescod, Rachel Madin, Alex Bradstreet and Hannah McConnell. The Staff Reunion had a marvellous display of photographs as well as the usual reunions in July and August. I visited another girls school during the year as part of in service experience organized by the Australian Archivist Association. I always pick up new ideas at these Special Interest Group meetings. The school who hosted the meeting has an archivist and a heritage officer working there for 4 days per week and do a lot of educational and curriculum work. Their past grammarians are also very much involved as you are here. I am very grateful for your encouragement and assistance, and the materials you are always giving to the archives. In fact it was the initiative of IGOGA who moved to get the archives set up and financed me for two days per week for the first year to set it up. Of course it has taken a lot longer to do all the work required and it became obvious that volunteers would be a great help but an archivist was needed to do the continuing work. This will be my final Archives report to the IGOGA, as my resignation takes effect from the end of March. After 30 year s work I am pleased to have reached several goals although the incoming of each year s material will always mean you never get to the end of it all. As my first computer was received for the archives in 2005 much of the registration and accessioning work has been recorded by hand in numerous arch folders.so the milestone of getting all of that put onto the computer has been reached. The other goal to move a significant amount offsite has been reached also. The assistance of Andrew Summers who managed to read my writing, enter all which I have not had chance to do and quickly understood the archival system has been invaluable. Thank you Andrew! Looking back on my 30 years as Archivist here having moved the archives six times, replaced all the boxes once and now have a new same sized model for all new material, I have to say my time here has been most enjoyable. I feel that the 11
achievement is satisfying and I thank you all very much, it has been great working with you. Anne Sells 4. INTER-SCHOOL GOLF CHALLENGE CUP REPORT 2013 Submitted by JOANNA BENNETT (Pearson) (1953) - Convener The tournament this year was held at Woodlands Golf Club on Monday April 8th 2013 with twenty nine (29) schools competing. Our team this year comprised of MARY BALHARRIE (1964), VICKI GODFREY (Young) (1967), SALLY FORRESTER (Halkyard) (1976) and JUDY STICKLAND (Walker) (1960). Only Mary had competed before but I think the others enjoyed the challenge. IGGS didn't do so well but I have suggested that they have another go next year to restore their confidence!! The results were: 1 st Place: Shelford with 144pts 2 nd Place: MGGS with 130pts 3 rd Place: Korowa with 125 pts. We raised $1300 from our stall which goes to Cottage by the Sea. Our girls all donated $10 which provides one of the Trophy Spoons. Perhaps next year they will be the recipients. Jo Bennett (Convenor). 5. OLD GRAMMARIANS ANNUAL GOLF DAY 2013 Submitted by Joanna Bennett (Pearson) (1953) Convener On Friday 13th September we gathered at Latrobe Golf Club for our annual golf day. This year we had 10 players and the weather was very good. Wind and rain had been forecast. Unfortunately the greens had just been cored and for some of us were quite difficult. I have to admit I was the least able to cope! But not our winner and runner-up, they managed very well. VIRGINIA MC DONALD won with 39 pts MARLENE GOULD was second with 35pts. Most commendable! Marie Casey came for lunch which was great. She has always been a stalwart of OGs golf. Hope to see her playing again next year. We have not decided on our venue for next year. To be explored! Retirement of School Archivist Anne Sells will be retiring as the School Archivist at the end of Term 1 2014. Anne has been in the job for 30 years and has made a wonderful contribution to the school and contributed greatly in the setting up of the school archives, which is in constant use by the IGOGA, the school community and students. 13
Mary Connellan, the retired Head of Library, will be taking up the post as School Activist. Sue Lees will contact Anne Sells and thank her for all her work and contribution to the IGOGA.
