Cooperative Extension Service Daviess County 4800A New Hartford Road Owensboro KY 42303 (270) 685-8480 Fax: (270) 685-3276 www.ca.uky.edu/ces Did you know that farmers in Kentucky can make a donation of $10 when they renew their farm license plates that will help raise funds for 4-H? The Ag Tag Program is supported by the Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture, Ryan Quarles. The money raised by the program is evenly split between Kentucky 4-H, Kentucky FFA, and Kentucky Proud, which promotes agricultural products raised, grown, or processed in Kentucky by Kentuckians. Last year Kentucky 4-H programs received $180,119 from the Ag Tag Program. These funds are split between the county where the funds originated and the Kentucky 4-H Foundation for state level programs. Daviess County 4-H received $2,563 of that sum. That money goes straight into our 4-H Council account where it benefits Daviess County 4-H ers by contributing to 4-H Camp Scholarships, leader training, and local 4-H promotional and educational events. Please make sure you support our state and local 4-H programs by encouraging farmers to make this donation! We thank our farmers for their continued support! Daviess County Summer 4-H Camp will be June 6-9 at West Kentucky 4-H Camp. Camp is open to youth ages 9-15 years. The cost is $195, or $185 if paid in full by May 1. The fee includes meals, lodging, transportation and a t-shirt. Please send your 4-H Camp Application in as soon as possible. This application is available online at: http://daviess.ca.uky.edu/sites/daviess.ca.uky.edu/ files/camp%20page%201.pdf. Camp fills up quickly! As always we are looking for adults and teens to serve as volunteers at camp. If you are interested, please contact us. All volunteers must go through a screening process which includes a background check and an interview. Parents, please be aware we can only accept the number of campers we have the adults to supervise. Please consider serving as a camp volunteer to ensure we can take as many youth as want to attend. If you can t attend, maybe you know someone who can! Don t miss out on experiencing 4-H Camp this year! 1

District 6 North 4-H Horse Camp is scheduled for Friday - Sunday, April 22-24 at the Union County Fair and Exposition Center in Sturgis. Registration forms and fees are due Friday, March 18, and are available at the Extension Office. All adults attending must have completed the 4-H Youth Protection process. Contact Stacey at the Extension office if you have questions. Exciting news for the Allied Homeschoolers United 4-H Club With the wonderful growth and interest in this club, we are thrilled to welcome our new 4-H volunteer leader and partner, Mrs. Lelia Gaines, who will be working with the Homeschool Cloverbuds, ages 5-8, members of the group. Lelia is a longtime friend of 4-H and an active Extension Homemaker Club member. Meetings are the 3 rd Tuesday of each month at 10:30 a.m. at the Extension Office. For more information, contact the Extension Office. In 1951 it was announced that a stamp would be made celebrating the 50 th anniversary of the beginning of 4-H. This stamp was officially issued on January 15, 1952, the anniversary of the first meeting of what would be 4-H, in Springville, Ohio. A.B. Graham, the educator who organized the first meeting and was in attendance, along with members of that original boys and girls clubs. Applications are now available for the 2016-2017 Shooting Sports Teen Ambassador Board. This is an opportunity for youth, ages 15-18, involved in the Shooting Sports Program, to represent not only Daviess County but also District 6 at the state level. This is a great opportunity available, and I would love to see one of our Daviess County youth be a part! The A. B. Graham Club, members of the original boys, and girls club organized by Graham in Springfield, Ohio, in 1902 at the time of issue of the 4-H Commemorative Stamp. For more information regarding this program, please contact Lindsey at 270-685-8480 or lindsey.boone2@uky.edu. 2

4-H will be hosting a County-Wide 4-H Science Fair at the Daviess County Cooperative Extension Office on Thursday, March 24 at 4:30 p.m. Additional information for planning and registration can be found on the Daviess County 4-H website and Facebook page. Time is running out to get registered so you must hurry! Registration is due no later than 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 18. Please contact Angie or Lindsey at 270-685-8480 for more information. Love camp and wish to be involved year-round? This is your chance! The Camp Improvement Committee will meet on Thursday, March 31 at 5:30 p.m. This meeting is open to all those that camp, or intend to camp, at West KY 4-H Camp. Each county is allowed a vote for adults and teens to represent the county. If you are interested in attending this meeting, please contact Lindsey at the Extension Office. For the month of March you are invited to enter our 2 nd Focus on the Clover 4-H Photography Contest. We know that most of our youth love to take pictures. Be creative and come up with a unique way to photograph a four-leaf clover! It doesn t even have to be a real clover, but it could be. You can create one using just about anything you have around your home or yard, using your friends and family, drawing or any other way you can think of to create a four-leaf clover. You can begin submitting your photos on March 1, and they will be accepted till the end of the month on March 31. Photos can be submitted by email, mail, or dropped off at the Extension Office. Prizes will be awarded for the top three entries. Photos will be judged based on State Fair guidelines as well as creativity and use of the clover. All photos submitted will be displayed at the Daviess County 4-H Achievement Banquet in April, and winners will be announced. Remember, if you choose a photo of the 4-H clover it cannot be altered or changed in anyway due to copyright protection. Clover Photography Guidelines Exhibit is limited to a single photograph. Subject of the photograph must include a four-leaf clover (photos of three-leaf clovers will not be accepted). Four-leaf clover may be real or created. Photograph may be color or black and white. For more information or with questions call the Extension office at 270-685-8480. Photos can be submitted as follows: Mail or in person: Daviess County Cooperative Extension Office Clover Photo Contest 4800A New Hartford Road Owensboro, KY 42303 Email: angie.padgett@uky.edu The Marksmen Club held an Internal BB Match at their last practice. Each 4-H er involved continues to improve, and the coaches are very proud of their efforts and focus. For most of the participants, this was their first experience in a match setting, and they did a fantastic job! Taking top three in each age division with scores are as follows: 9 11 1 Daniel Moninger 183 2 Tucker Ray 183 3 Koal West 138 12-14 1 Natalie Holland 247 2 Danielle Carpenter 236 3 Mackenzie Mahlinger 212 15-18 1 Hannah Carpenter 247 2 Ashton Crowe 238 3 Mike Randolph 224 Congratulations to each of these Marksmen! 3

This year there is an opportunity to compete in the Demonstrations portion of the Communications Contest. We will be holding a County Demonstration Contest on Thursday, March 17 at Highland Elementary School beginning at 2:30 p.m. If you are interested in competing, please contact Lindsey at 270-685-8480 for more information. In February, MacKenzie Jones, State 4-H Vice President, came to visit with the Highland Hornets 4-H Club to help them prepare for their demonstrations. The club enjoyed her visit and made great progress in writing the speech portion of their demonstrations! Peace, Love, and 4-H Districts 6 and 7 are teaming up to put on an Area Teen Retreat to be held at West Kentucky 4-H Camp on Friday-Sunday, April 15-17. This retreat is focused on leadership and getting to know other teens from the area. If you are interested, please contact Lindsey at the Extension Office. Registration is due no later than Monday, March 21 so call today! For the past thirty-one years the Kentucky Farm Bureau has been investing in our state s youth through the Institute for Future Agricultural Leaders (IFAL) Program. IFAL is a unique five-day summer leadership conference that exposes students to college life and explores different fields of study for careers in agriculture. IFAL allows high school juniors to choose between separate conferences at two of Kentucky s premier universities. This year s IFAL conferences will be held June 12-16 at Murray State University in Murray and June 19-23 at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. If you are interested in attending one of these conferences, please contact Stacey Ramming Potts at 270-685-8480 for more information and for an application. All applications must be delivered to your local County Farm Bureau by April 15.
