Applicability (Identify to whom this Operating Protocol applies) PCC faculty, deans, members of the Curriculum/Academic Standards Committee, and instructional staff Definitions (Define abbreviations, acronyms, and technical terms) CCCNS Colorado Common Course Numbering System New courses For the purpose of this operating protocol, a new course is a course that is currently listed in the CCCNS database and being proposed as an addition to the PCC catalog to be offered as a class. Unique New Courses For the purpose of this operating protocol, a unique new course is a proposed course, which is not currently listed in the CCCNS database or the college catalog. Unique new courses must be approved by the PCC Curriculum & Academic Standards Committee and the State Faculty Curriculum Committee (SFCC). Upon approval, a unique new course will be added to the proposed CCCNS database and can be offered for one year, but must complete the approval process to be added to the approved CCCNS database. The Operating Protocol statement is the governing rule, principle, plan, or understanding that guides the procedure) The scope and nature of the curriculum shall be directly related to the stated purposes of the College and shall be maintained with available and projected financial and academic resources. In order to avoid proliferation of course offerings and degree programs, new courses and programs shall be established when a need has been demonstrated and the necessary resources have been secured.
Page 2 of 8 Procedure 602 - Curriculum All curriculum changes will be approved by the Curriculum and Academic Standards Committee and will follow established guidelines. All programs of study will be designed to meet the requirements of appropriate licensing, regulatory, or accrediting agencies. Curriculum will consist only of Colorado Community College Common Course Numbering System (CCCNS) approved courses. 602-A Degree/Certificate Approval Form Degree/Certificate Approval Form will be used for new degrees/certificates and updates/deletions. The degree/certificate form and supporting documentation is forwarded to the Pueblo Community College Curriculum and Academic Standards Committee for approval. New, modified, or deleted degrees/certificates will be published/removed in the next catalog upon approval by the appropriate authority(ies) including but not limited to the Colorado Community College System (CCCS), the Higher Learning Commission, the programmatic accreditation agency and Financial Aid eligibility. (See attachment A) 602-B Course Selection and Number System Pueblo Community College uses only courses from the Colorado Community College Common Course Numbering System, which follows the course numbering system used by the state system community colleges. Department chairpersons and instructional deans are responsible for supplying the Pueblo Community College Curriculum and Academic Standards Committee with accurate and complete course information including, but not limited to course numbers, CIP codes, course titles, credit hours, course descriptions, course objectives and contact hours. 602-C Course Approval Form The Course Approval Form is used for new, unique new, course modifications or course deletions. The Course Approval Form is submitted to the Pueblo Community College Curriculum and Academic Standards Committee for approval. Upon approval, the course may be published in the catalog, unless further action is required by CCCS. The Course Approval Form can be found on the Portal. (See attachment B) 602-D Course Guide Template Form The Course Guide Template form is used to add a new course or make a change to an existing course through the CCCNS. This form is used in conjunction with the Course Approval Form and is submitted to the Pueblo Community College Curriculum and Academic Standards Committee for initial approval. Upon initial approval by the Curriculum and Academic Standards Committee and temporary posting to the CCCNS website, the new course or modified course may be offered for one year. The Chief Academic Officer or designee will forward the Course Guide Template form to CCCNS for final approval. Upon final approval by CCCNS of the modified or new course, the course will be published in the catalog. (See attachment C) 602-E Course Syllabi All courses will have a course syllabus, which specifies the content of the course, requirements, and grading practices. Such syllabi will be kept up-to-date by the appropriate instructional administrator(s). If a syllabus is extensive, a summary may be distributed in order to cut costs. Used as a guide by all faculty teaching the same course within a department. Placed on file in the office of the appropriate department chair and in the office of the appropriate Deans. Syllabi are posted on the PCC student portal and D2L repository. Prepared by the appropriate faculty member and approved by his/her department chairperson.
