Recruitment Pack Section 2 Governance & Organisation What Does The Union Do? The University of Manchester Students Union is a student-led organisation, established in 1908 and represents all students at the University of Manchester. We are proud to be the largest students union in the country, at a university ranked 47th in the world, 11th best in Europe and 7th best in the UK, by The Times Higher Education World University Rankings. We are a registered charity with a turnover in excess of 6 million per year. The Students Union is at the heart of student life which encompasses representation, welfare, clubs and societies, volunteering and training, along with our commercial activities. We are student life. Amplified. The Students Union is made up of the following areas: Executive Team The Students Union is a democratic organisation with 8 full time officers who are elected as Exec Officers and Trustees. Our Board of Trustees is made up of the 8 Exec officers, 3 Students and 3 external trustees. The Board of Trustees is supported by a team of professional staff, who are responsible for implementing the day-to-day running of the organisation. We employ a full-time team of 70 staff and over 250 part-time student staff. Our 8 Exec Officers are made up as follows: General Secretary - Responsible for the Union s internal affairs, including its governance and democratic processes, they sit as Chair of the Trustee Board and represent the student body on the University s Board of Governors. They are the primary link of communication between the Students Union and the University and are responsible for the Students Union s relationship with the National Union of Students. Education Officer - Responsible for matters affecting students through their studies. They represent the student body to the University and coordinate the Union s activities on matters such as assessments and course representation. Activities and Development Officer - Responsible for directing and overseeing the running of the Students Union s extra-curricular activities, including Societies, Volunteering, Raising and Giving and Student Media. They are also responsible for the coordination and organisation of Pangaea, the largest student-led music festival in Europe. Women s Officer - Responsible for leading the Students Union s Women s campaigns, and for covering matters affecting women s inclusion and welfare. They represent women students to the University and wider society. Wellbeing Officer - Responsible for matters affecting the wellbeing of students, such as exam stress. They help oversee the Students Union s advice service, and help coordinate other wellbeing related bodies, such as the Nightline service. Diversity Officer - Responsible for matters affecting under-represented students and students who are affected by social injustice. They are responsible for the coordination of the representative structures for BME & LGBT students. Community Officer - responsible for matters affecting students in their local community and the Manchester area. They represent student views to the City Council and the University s residence staff. The Community Officer has oversight over the representative Associations for the Halls of Residence. Campaigns and Citizenship Officer - Responsible for matters affecting students in wider society and at a national level. They have overall oversight of the Students Union s campaigning work, including managing bids for campaign grants and developing programmes to train potential activists.

Recruitment Pack Section 2 The Union has representatives on a wide range of University committees to ensure that student views are represented, from the Board of Governors down to working and planning groups. Through our team, training and support is offered to all student representatives from s and Student Officers, to Campaigning Groups and Elections. Membership Support Recreational Sports, Society Membership, Volunteering and Advice form a major part of the student experience at Manchester. With over 300 societies, a radio station, TV, RAG, Community Action and a newspaper, the opportunities for student development are almost limitless. The Membership Support team is charged with supporting and developing these activities. Our advice service offers specialist advice to students. Our team of professionals have in-depth knowledge of relevant regulations and procedures relating to academic problems, housing issues and issues specifically relating to international students. Marketing and Communications With over 40,000 students, 300 societies, 8 Exec Officers and 10 trading outlets, there s always plenty to talk about at the Students Union. The Marketing and Communications Team are a central service who work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to promote the Students Union. The team provide a full campaign management service, using in-house designers to generate strong creative concepts to support robust marketing campaigns. The team manage all media relations for the Students Union and are responsible for the output of all communications channels, as well as acting as the brand guardians for the organisation. The Front of House team are an integral part of the department, acting as the first point of contact for visitors. Media sales also sit within Marketing and Communications, ensuring that vital funds are raised through sponsorship and advertising. Operations The Operations team run the Union Bars, Catering, Conferencing, and functions, providing spaces for our members to socialise and organise in. This department is responsible for the Health & Safety of our operation and supports our student groups. The Students Union also owns The Manchester Academy, one of the most iconic live music venues in the North West. With over 400 public live shows per year, the Academy also provides space for our students to run their own events. All profits from our commercial activity are invested straight back in to our core student-facing services.
