Training Priorities identified from Training Needs Analysis survey (January 15) This document provides recommendations for the training priorities which were identified from the training needs analysis (TNA) survey conducted in January 15. The TNA survey covered all of the areas published in CILIP s Professional Knowledge and Skills base (PKSB) document. The training needs recommendations highlighted in this document can be used to inform training commissioning decisions for NHS library staff. It should be stressed that the priorities discussed here are only the training requirements identified from the TNA there are other aspects that also need to be taken into account when formulating a national training program ie: training to support core competencies training needs that arise as part of Knowledge for Healthcare requirements or to support the delivery of Knowledge for Healthcare. Emerging technologies/developments that may not have been present during formulation of survey There are two sections to this document. The first section is an analysis of all the areas of the PKSB and the responses from all respondents have been ranked according to their popularity. The second section focuses specifically on responses to the LKS Skills and Knowledge section of the PKSB (this has been included for information purposes). More detail analysis is presented in 3 appendices each appendix focuses on a specific bandings group. There are issues that need to be considered when looking at the ranking. There is a risk that variations in response rates between bandings will have affected the position in the rankings ie if a greater proportion of band 7s and upwards have responded this could bias results towards topics more relevant to them. However a counter argument is that there are fewer of them. To negate this, the group also considered what were the highest ranking items were for each of the banding groups (bands 3 & 4, bands 5 & 6 and bands 7 & upwards). Secondly, for many of the topics there are only minor variations in their rankings. Analysis was also carried out as to what the preferred method of delivering training is for the three band groups. There were significant differences and these must be taken into account when commissioning the traininge.g.bands 3 to 4 indicated a strong preference for workplace or online/distance learning, whilst bands 7 and above indicated a preference for out of the office training. 1

A training programme should be developed in conjunction with the impact group. Some Trusts do in-house courses on lean thinking etc. but it is unclear what learning outcomes would be expected from this training. This is another topic that would need further investigation before any training can be commissioned. Amanda Stearn has worked with some of the regions to provide training on strategy planning. The Group will gather feedback from those areas. The preference for bands 7 and upwards is for study days. If commissioned, it is recommended the course is held across several different areas of the country. There may be variation amongst library staff with their perceived expertise and their confidence at advanced searching may not be a lack of knowledge but lack of confidence. ebooks High priority (2 nd ) for bands 3-4 but much less of priority for the other bands. It is possible it is more of an awareness issue with the bands 3-4 Recommended delivery It is unclear what aspect of Apps library staff would like training on; is it more awareness of what apps are available? Or learning in detail about specific apps to support users? Or about platform supporte.g.android or Apple or Windows tablets/phones? Alternatively is it about learning to create apps or how to adapt library web pages or other web 2 technologies to exploit apps? The Group recommends that further investigation be conducted to clarify learning needs. There are several trainers that have already delivered sessions for NHS libraries: Lisa Jeskins and Ned Potter (University of York). It is recommended that if social media training is being commissioned there is a need to discuss with the trainers the best method of delivery (face-toface, hands on, distance learning) to achieve the learning outcomes. There is no indication what learning outcomes are required from this training. Both are very broad areas and further work is required to ascertain what aspects of these topics staff wish to be trained on. There is likely to be the expertise within the regions to provide this at a regional level. Probably best delivered using a hands-on approach within regions by local experts from within the NHS. There have been recent (15) study days on ebooks in Manchester and London. Possibly re-visit this in 17 3

Section 2 - Training priorities across all bands and focused on the LKS Skills & Knowledge section of the PKSB A - Professional/technical expertise Training need Understanding open access Scanning & Synthesis Searching Management Literature Grey Literature Information Searching (Basics/Intermediate) Basis for recommendation This was a priority across all levels of staff Although a low priority for bands 3 & 4, this was rated as a priority by bands 5 and upwards This was ranked as the one of the top priorities of bands 7 upwards and was also popular with bands 5-6 This is a priority for professional staff A popular priority for paraprofessionals Recommended delivery Possibly look at how this is delivered in HE however there possibly needs to be further feedback from library staff to identify what their specific needs are i.e. a greater understanding of Athens or a greater understanding of open access schemes in general (including Shibboleth etc.) The preferred learning method with bands 7 and upwards is for instructor led training off- site. Several courses have been run and at least two learning providers have been identified. Recommend that the Working Group reviews feedback on these, clarifies their objectives and explores options for delivery: possibly a blend of remote distance learning with face to face training at 3 or 4 centres across the country This is likely to be more about familiarising managers with the most appropriate/effective resources to use. Whilst there is a preference towards off site training for this group this particular topic is probably more appropriately delivered by distance learning. This is another topic that could be delivered remotely and it should be possible to identify suitable trainers or to tap into local experts Best delivered using a hands-on approach. There should be expertise within most local libraries to deliver this on site. If the expertise is not available on site (or there is a lack of opportunity) regional leads should consider covering this as part of a paraprofessional training event. 4

Information searching (Advanced) Highly ranked by bands 3 to 6. There may be variation amongst library staff with their perceived expertise and their confidence at advanced searching; it may not be a lack of knowledge but a lack of confidence. Enquiry desk skills A priority solely with bands 3 to 4 Critical Appraisal Copyright Both Copyright and Critical Appraisal are commonly suggested as a training need. It is uncertain whether this is a lack of confidence leading to a perceived lack of knowledge or whether librarians genuinely lack the knowledge required. Another topic that could be delivered using a hands-on approach within regions by local experts from within the NHS. The group felt this was best delivered as an off-site training course (despite the preference amongst this group for on-site training) as much could be gained by sharing experiences. Training could be commissioned nationally with workshops taking place at 3 or 4 places across the country. Critical appraisal training is relatively easily addressed by holding regional workshops. However should they be one off training or is a more continuous refresher approach necessary? The 14 copyright workshops/webinars approach is an approach that could be repeated possibly bi-annually or tri-annually. 5
