Westminster Cathedral Catholic Primary School Founded by The Jesuit Fathers Circa 1849 Newsletter 15th September 2017 Love one another as I have loved you John 13:34 Our Mission Statement A new commandment I give unto you That you love one another As I have loved you, That you love one another As I have loved you. By this shall all men Know you are My disciples If you have love one to another. Our Mission Statement continues to be central in everything we do. Please ask your child this week about our mission statement and what each petal represents. Have a conversation about what they are going to do this week to fulfil the mission statement. Joy Love one another as I have loved you Dear parents and carers, Challenging ourselves Thank you to all the parents and carers that attended the Maths No Problem workshop Tuesday evening introducing you to our new maths scheme. It was wonderful seeing so many people attend. Sixty were there. We hope you found it useful hearing from a representative how the scheme was developed and how it is being embedding in our school. Thank you to Miss Lee for all the hard work she has put in place to prepare us for the launch. In a couple of weeks we will invite you to come and see the teaching of maths in the school and you can sit in the lessons and challenge yourself as the children do daily. Welcome I would like to warmly welcome our new Reception children who started this week. It is lovely seeing siblings in the school uniform starting school just as their brothers and sisters have done previously. I would also like to welcome our new families. You have joined a wonderful school and community we hope you will have many happy years at our school. Start of Year Mass Next Wednesday, 20th September Father Michael will be celebrating our start of Year Mass in school. He has had to change the time so Mass will now be at 2pm.Please try to come so we can pray as a school community for another successful year. Meet the Teacher and Curriculum Information Evening. I look forward to seeing you all next Tuesday 3.45pm OR 5.30pm at the Curriculum Information Evening. This is a good opportunity for you to see your child s classroom, meet the teaching staff and know about the expectations for the year ahead. It is a worthwhile meeting. Children will be able to attend the meeting with you. God s blessings, Mrs Stacey Headteacher

A reminder of the uniform for this time of year. Boys - Autumn/Spring terms Grey Trousers/Shorts not `Bermuda' type V-Neck Grey Jumper (no zips) White Shirts School Tie Short Grey Socks Black Blazer (optional) Black/Grey/Navy Blue/Red Coats School Uniform Girls - Autumn/Spring terms Dark Grey Tunics (Infants, early Juniors) Dark Grey Skirt (Older Juniors) V-Neck Grey Jumper/Cardigan White Shirts (no blouses or V necks) School Tie White Socks or Plain Red or Plain Grey Tights Black Blazer (optional) Black/Grey/Navy Blue/Red Coats Sensible Black Shoes -preferably lace-up or bars (We have been advised that slip-on shoes are not suitable for young growing feet). NO FASHION SHOES/BOOTS Red, white or black Hair Ribbons ONLY (no fancy head wear or accessories) In the cold weather children both boys and girls may wear a plain navy, black, grey or red woollen hat and scarf. No logos or football hats or scarves. In instances where the weather may be extremely cold or wet, children may come to school in Wellington boots but are required to bring their school shoes to school and change into these once in the classroom. This is for the benefit of the children s safety and comfort. In past the September has been a warm month and so the children have worn their Summer uniform, however this year seems colder. I therefore encourage all children to wear the Autumn uniform and will expect all children to be in the Autumn uniform by October. School bags and black/grey/navy blue/ red coats are part of our school uniform and expected to be used. It has amazed me how many items of clothes are not labelled. PLEASE label all uniform as we always try to return uniform to the children and can only do so if labelled. www.westminstercathedralprimary.org.uk Please continue to look at our school website, especially Latest News and the School Gallery. Lots of new pictures and information about all the events in our school are there for you to enjoy.

Healthy Snacks and healthy breakfast We provide fruit for all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. In KS2 the children are allowed to bring a healthy snack to eat at break time. A healthy snack should be low in sugar. We recommend fruit and fruit based cereal bars. Some children are beginning to come to school with chocolate biscuits e.g. Kit Kats and chocolate based cereal bars, these are not acceptable. Please help us promote healthy living by providing healthy snacks for your child before and after school. I will continue to monitor break time snacks and will speak to individual children and families if need be. If your child is complaining they are hungry please ask yourself, Is my child eating enough at breakfast? As you are probably aware, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Breakfast provides the body and brain with fuel after an overnight fast - that's where its name originates, breaking the fast! Without breakfast you are effectively running on empty, like trying to start the car with no petrol! We provide a breakfast club from 8am every morning. We ask the children to arrive before 8.30am allowing time for them to eat a good breakfast before starting school. Breakfast Clubs have been proven to have a positive impact on punctuality, academic results, concentration, behaviour and attainment. Apart from providing us with energy, breakfast foods are good sources of important nutrients such as calcium, iron and B vitamins as well as protein and fibre. The body needs these essential nutrients and research shows that if these are missed at breakfast, they are less likely to be compensated for later in the day. For more information about Breakfast Club, please see Mrs Hughes. After School Clubs If your child has a place in a club this term a text should have been sent to you. We ask for a swift payment for the clubs thank you. The after school clubs are an extension of the school day and on our school premises, therefore we all have the same expectations of behaviour throughout their time in our school. FIT FOR SPORT are continuing to provide wrap around care until 5.55pm five days a week. For more information please see; www.fitforsport.co.uk
