Thank you for your interest in applying for the HBCU Tour April 9, 2017 April 15, 2017. Six (6) Contra Costa students will be selected to attend the HBCU tour, led by Educational Student Tours. EOPS and Per Ankh Academy will have 1 space designated for a student from each program and the remaining 4 will be open for all Contra Costa College students. Interested students MUST APPLY and meet minimum eligibility criteria. A HBCU review committee of faculty, staff, and administrators will make final selections based on strength and quality of application. Students who are not selected will be placed on a waitlist. This tour includes students from Contra Costa College (CCC), Diablo Valley College (DVC), and College of Alameda (CoA), San Jose City College and Evergreen College, as well as community colleges from Southern California. About the Trip: Students from Contra Costa College (CCC), Diablo Valley College (DVC), and College of Alameda (CoA), San Jose City College and Evergreen College depart Oakland International Airport to Baltimore/Washington International Airport on Sunday, April 9, 2017 and return Saturday April 15, 2017. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from Oakland Airport. Students from CCC will be accompanied by Joel Nickelson-Shanks, CCC Student Life Coordinator. Each college will have a chaperone attending. Students will travel in tour buses to colleges and historic sites on the itinerary (attached). Colleges included on tour are: Lincoln University, Morgan State University, Hampton University, Norfolk State University, West Virginia State University, Howard University and Bennett or North Carolina A&T University. Students will share a hotel room, 3 students per room, and each student will have his/her own bed. Depending on the gender breakdown of CCC students selected to attend, CCC students may also have a roommate from another college. A mandatory pre-departure orientation meeting with the tour directors will be scheduled prior to the trip (date to be determined). All participants must attend. Students will be required to sign an excursion waiver form, consent/release form, and medical consent form, and provide copies of their official identification (for airline ticketing purposes). The CCC chaperone and tour directors will receive copies of this information. In addition, students must complete a pre-trip survey and a post-trip survey. Spring 2017 1
The Application Process: Contra Costa College: HBCU Tour 2017 The HBCU Tour Committee will review applications and select participants. Depending on the number and quality of applications received, applicants may be required to participate in an interview. Please reserve Friday, January 27, 2017 from 9-1:00 PM for an interview at CCC. Six (6) students will be selected 1 EOPS, 1 Per Ankh Academy, 4 CCC students Minimum Eligibility criteria include: Completion of at least 15 transferable units at the time of application (students with more transfer units will have higher priority) 2.5 TRANSFERABLE GPA or higher at the time of application verified through unofficial transcript; Good academic and disciplinary standing at Contra Costa College; Interest in attending an HBCU; Quality of Personal Statement. APPLICATION AND TIMELINE PROCESS: Week of December 12, 2016: Applications will be available to students. January 9, 2017 (no later than 2pm): Completed Applications must be submitted to Andrea Phillips, Counselor/Transfer Coordinator, in the Student and Administration Building Room 227 (SAB-227). January 27, 2017: (9-1:00 pm): IF NEEDED - Interviews of applicants (location and time will be emailed by Friday, January 20, 2017). January 31, 2017: Notification emails sent to students selected to participate. February 2, 2017: Deadline to confirm participation, complete pre-trip survey, and sign financial agreement. February 21, 2017 (no later than 5pm): Deadline to cancel participation must be submitted in writing/typed to Andrea Phillips, Counselor/Transfer Coordinator, in the Student and Administration Building Room 227. Selected Participant Responsibilities: Contra Costa College: HBCU Tour 2017 Since the trip is during regularly scheduled classes, students are responsible to: Inform instructors of their participation, arranging assignments or take tests in advance, and Make up any missed homework, quizzes, tests, assignments, etc. We will provide verification of your participation in this school-sponsored activity if you request it. Pre & Post Tour Surveys Spring 2017 HBCU TOUR visual/ oral presentation to Contra Costa College staff, faculty, administration, students. (More info TBA) College Costs: The cost of the tour is $1499 and will be paid for by CCC Student Equity funds. Since this trip is funded with college funds, students who are selected to attend MUST sign a financial agreement as a condition of participating. Any cancellations must be submitted in writing to Andrea Phillips, Counselor/Transfer Coordinator, no later than Tuesday, February 21, 2017 (5pm). If you do not cancel by the deadline or miss your flight, you will be responsible for the full cost of $1499. A hold will be placed on your account for the full amount and you will not be able to register for classes, order transcripts, etc., until the cost has been repaid. Student Costs: Transportation to and from the Oakland Airport $10 tip for the HBCU Tour bus driver Recommended to pack light meal for April 9,2017 departure Spending money for souvenirs or snacks you purchase. In addition, any charges for room service, toll calls, mini-bar/fridge, movies, Wi-Fi, etc., at the hotel will be the responsibility of students registered in the room. The dates of the HBCU Tour are Sunday, April 9 through Saturday, April 15, 2017 (times to be determined). If selected to attend, you will need to provide transportation for yourself to the Oakland Airport by the required meeting time and from the Oakland Airport to home when you return, at your own expense. During tour, you will be expected to be a representative of Contra Costa College, conduct yourself appropriately, remain with the tour group the entire time, and participate in all components of the program. Prior to the time of their establishment, and for many years afterwards, African Americans were generally denied admission to traditionally white institutions. As a result, HBCUs became the principle means for providing postsecondary education to African Americans.
