Amanda Lockwood (510)499-3244 amandalockwood9@gmail.com Sister Butterflies: Gateway mural to be painted on the retaining wall on Mountain at the Park St. freeway exit ramp, approximately 4000 square feet. Concept :! The California Oak Tree is already a strong symbol in Oakland, and remains a consistent source of pride for all of our residents. Last year, I participated in an Ocean Guardian research project at Joaquin Miler School... my part was to paint a mural on campus that reflected student learning about the local Beaconsfield Watershed and the native plants and animals that inhabit it. We learned that the California Sister butterfly was reliant on the oak tree as its host plant, so we incorporated this butterfly into the mural. These beautiful butterflies can be seen in droves when hiking in the Oakland Hills during the spring and summer. The sister butterfly is quite striking, with large contrasting areas of dark brown and orange and a tiny bit of white sprinkled in, and it occurred to me that it would be really beautiful to paint a large swarm of them on a long wall, in a flowing composition. So the idea of the oak tree with a swarm of sister butterflies alongside it was already forming, and when I saw the wall on Mountain blvd., it seemed the perfect space for this concept. The swarm of butterflies represents the brilliance of a connected community and the oak suggests roots and strength. The connection between the two reflects our dependence on one another as a vibrant, unified people. Timeline:! Oct 2015 : Volunteers prep and paint the wall adobe color for the background of the mural design. November 2015-January 2016 Weather permitting, I will paint the Oak Tree portion of the mural on the largest sections of the wall. It will be painted an olive green color and silhouette style. June and July, 2016 Paint the butterfly swarm and the Montclair block letters onto the wall.!! August 2016 Volunteers can assist in sealing the wall

Budget: based on 4000-square feet PHASE 1: Work done up to January 2016 background paint, adobe color : $960.00 1 gallon covers 250 square feet. We need 16 gallon of primer and 16 gallons of color, 32 gallons total. 32 gallons x $30 per gallon = $960.00 materials $300.00 (enough brushes, rollers, poles, drop cloths, etc for a group of volunteers to spread out and paint the wall) Mural paint : $200.00 scaffold : $400.00 total so far : $1860.00 artist s labor : $30/hr x 108 work hours= $3240 labor($3240.00) + materials ($1860.00) = $5000.00 PHASE 2: Work done during the summer of 2016, completing and sealing the mural additional mural paint to finish the wall ; I use Nova Colors : $500.00 sealant: $80 per gallon x 16 gallons= $1280.00 ( this is based on applying a single coat, we normally use 2-3 coats but this is a large wall and will be expensive to seal.) Artist s labor: $30.00/hr x 120 hrs = $3600.00 $3600.00+$1280.00+$500.00= $5380.00 Total for entire project=$10,380.00 * Note... to keep my working hours accurate according to schedule and budget, I will need help from volunteers in sealing the wall in August, as this part of the project is labor-intensive and time-consuming.
