Volume 7, Issue 3 National Honor Society Inductions n October 24, Juniors who qualified and met the O specific requirements were inducted into the Mt. Erin Chapter of the National Honor Society. Mt. Erin Hall was filled with the twenty-one new inductees and their family members. Others in attendance were Principal Jennifer Salazar, Vice-principal Maria Avila, as well as the fifty-one returning members, and NHS sponsors, Mary Ann de la Garza, Lydia Doubleday and Dr. Beth Landis. The memorable night was introduced by the President of NHS, Teresa Medellin. She welcomed the group in prayer and explained the amazing accomplishments that the lovely ladies have achieved thus far. IWHS proudly welcomed over 400 eighth graders to its campus from 20 Catholic, private and public schools in the San Antonio area. The mornings of Oct. 4-6 were overflowing with energy as IWHS Ambassadors provided a warm welcome to our guests from the moment they exited the busses. The Ambassadors guided their groups through the campus providing a narrative about the history of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, as well as the unique Shamrock environment. In addition, the new Shamrock gym was on full display with a club/organization fair popping with representatives happy to talk about Katherine Kennedy Carmen Martinez Samantha Mizell Elizabeth Mueller November 2, 2017 alumna Aimee Dennis Wauters, a registered dietitian at the University of Texas Health Science Center. Mrs. Wauters recounted her days at IWHS and remarked how well-prepared she felt for the challenges she has encountered in all aspects of her life. Concluding with the pin ceremony and the lighting of candles representing the NHS core values of service, scholarship, leadership, and character, the inductions were a great success with the help of all the NHS volunteers and sponsors who were able to make the evening flawless and unforgettable. High School Placement Test & Test Prep Workshop The IWHS High School Placement Test will be administered on Dec. 9 from 9-12 a.m. Because we want all interested students to do their best on the HSPT, this year IWHS is offering a Test Prep Workshop on Nov. 11 from 9 to 11 a.m. and an additional full-length online exam as practice for the actual HSPT. During the Test Prep Workshop, students will spend the morning with IWHS instructors who will present strategies for taking the three sections of the exam: Reading, Mathematics, and Language Skills. Upon completion of the Workshop, students will receive a link to a full-length online practice exam, which they may take on their own time. Upon completion of the exam it will be scored immediately, and students will receive the correct answers and an analysis of their areas of strength and those areas in need of improvement. With this feedback, students will have time to prepare for the actual HSPT administered on December 9 at IWHS. The fee for the Test Prep Workshop is $15 and will waive the cost of the HSPT on December 9, 2017. Students who test at IWHS will be eligible for scholarships, awards, and grants, as well as secure their placement as a Shamrock, so sign up today! Student Spotlight Spilled Ink: Twist Fate Challenge Winner Alexa Cortez Congratulations, Freshmen STUCO Officers, Sydney Segovia and Megan Riebe! he Spilled Ink Writer s Workshop, an T 8-week writer s workshop held every spring at IWHS Library, will enjoy its 4th school year in January. Every year, student writers gather to learn about the craft of writing, meet fellow student writers, play fun writing activities, and learn about publishing opportunities, including contests. Last year, Ms. Lisenbee posted a contest to the Spilled Ink Blackboard class called The Twist Fate Challenge. A partnership between Wattpad, Deviant Art, The National Writing Project, the Connected Learning Alliance and the Young Adult Library Services Association, the Twist Fate contest challenged teen writers and artists to write or draw a classic story or fairytale, with a twist by changing one small detail and creating an alternate scenario. Only a few teen writers and artists were selected from across the country, including Senior Alexandra Alexa Cortez!! Alexa is a very gifted and prolific writer, who has been writing since she was eleven years old. She has filled countless journals with stand-alone stories, as well as her book series, and like any good writer, has notebooks filled with ideas for her next book. She writes in a variety of genres, but likes fantasy and fairytale retellings the most. Her story for the Twist Fate contest is a rewrite of the King Arthur legend called Not about a Stone. The premise: what if Arthur wasn t able to pull the Excalibur from the stone? We are all so proud of you Alexa! CONGRATULATIONS on getting published!! Read the story. NAWBO n October 10, Valerie Garcia, Morgan O Barr, Isabel Contreras, Jessica Martinez, Alexia Flores, Brook Schafer, Sofia Rascoe, Kambri Garcia, Annel Frías, and Daniella Villalobos attended the Entrepreneurial Connections Dinner at the UIW Rosenberg SkyRoom. These young ladies including Miranda Rodriguez and Eleanor Palmer will be participating in the NAWBO mentoring program. NAWBO stands for the National Association of Women Business Owners and business women from the San Antonio foundation will be working with these girls to help learn about entrepreneurship. 4
Campus Ministry RETREAT SCHEDULE Nov. 6-7 Junior Retreat Jan. 18 Sophomore Retreat isters of Charity of the Incarnate Word S joined the student body for the Heritage Mass held on Oct. 4 and presided by Fr. Pat O Brien. In keeping with the Gospel message, Father explained, We pray to God to help us let go of the things that hold us back... To truly realize that we are forgiven for our mistakes and to give us the courage to look forward to what God has called us to do... If you truly look Heritage Mass at the gifts God has given you and what God is calling you to do, that is where joy and grace truly are. In recognizing the Sisters who were in attendance, Father asked the students to consider a vocation to the Church: If God is calling you to that, he said, then look at this first before choosing the usual path of job and family. The goal was to promote the school s Service Core Value by encouraging students to do three to four hours of volunteer work per week. The fair offered a variety of opportunities for students to become more involved in the San Antonio community. At the fair students heard several of their peers explain why it s important to serve and describe the many benefits they have received from being volunteers. Sharing their experiences were Isabelle Purcell, Marissa Gutierrez and Katherine Kennedy. Following the presentation, students visited with representatives from various organizations and signed up for volunteering. Those organizations represented were Inter City Development, Raices, The Village, Visitation House, The Women Global Connection, and SAMMinisteries. Athletics olleyball hosted Plano Prestonwood on V Friday, October 27, for the 1st round of playoffs. Shamrocks won the 1st set 25-21 but fell to the Lions in the next 3. The volleyball teams had a great year of hard Athletic Snapshot work, learning, and building memories. We will miss our Seniors, and we can't thank the athletes and parents enough for all their dedication and support the past four years! Way to go Volleyball! IWHS Junior Emeraldettes Dance Clinic All Kindergarteners through 8th graders are invited to join our Jr. Emeraldettes Dance Clinic on Saturday, Nov. 4! Around Campus n September 5, the Incarnate Word O Sophomore Class of 2020 began the cookie dough fundraiser. Students were encouraged for two weeks to sell as many boxes of cookie dough as they could, and by selling 15, they would receive an Incarnate Word t-shirt that was made just for the sales. On September 19, the fundraising packets were turned in, and the sophomore class officers counted and put together the orders. The class of 2020 raised $8,000! It s Cookie Time!! This money goes toward everything we do for the rest of our years at Incarnate Word, such as prom and much more. We are very happy to have raised this money to help benefit our class. All the students who sold picked up their boxes of cookie dough on October 17 to distribute to their customers. Thank you to all who helped our class fundraiser and bought cookie dough! -- Contributed by Ava Murray Class of 2020 VP Open House Following a bustling week of Middle School Tours, the IWHS faculty and staff, students, and PTO slowed down their pace to meet with parents and prospective students on Saturday, Oct. 21. A reception with student representatives from various clubs and organizations provided information while parents waited for Ambassador-led tours throughout the campus. Informational sessions shared the history and the mission of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word along with explanations of the application process. Teachers and students side -by-side shared what makes IWHS special. Thanks to all who showed their Shamrock pride and dedication by sharing their Saturday morning with us.. Mole Day ole Day is celebrated on October 23 to M commemorate Avogadro's number, 6.022 X 10 23. The AP Chemistry and AP Biology classes along with the science department celebrated Mole Day 2017 on Monday, October 23. It was a fiesta for all things Avogadro! Many of the activities included our traditional mole making, face painting, mole in one golfing, and mole toss. This year's winner for the most creative mole name, The Little Mole-maid, was sophomore Tori Rhea. Runners up include NaMoleon Bonaparte and emoletionally Wrecked. Around Campus Davidsons Respite House International Culture Club Bake Sale Coffee House Participants n Saturday, Oct. 14, Sophomore O students volunteered service at Davidson Respite House. Accompanied by sponsors JoAnne Gonzales and Dr. Lynn Piez, the students helped out by washing vans, putting up Halloween decorations, sanding a railing and, of course, interacting with the kids. Arianna Ramirez 20 had this to say, Davidson Respite House affected me greatly. I have always loved working with children, or those who have special needs, but I didn t really know what to expect. It was one of the best experiences I ve ever had. We got to help around with whatever needed to be done, and we also played tag with the kids and they all caught me and put me in the jail house. By the end of the game, they had caught all of us. They are really fast and competitive -- don t underestimate them! You really bond with all the children and the smile on their face warms your heart every time. Knowing that my being there made their day a little better, made me so incredibly happy. You re doing work when you re there, but it doesn t even feel like it. By the end, I didn t want to leave. I highly encourage anyone, who hasn t gone, to volunteer for the next Sophomore service day. These kids deserve endless love and happiness, and I was so honored to give them a little of that love and happiness that day. I cannot wait to go back and see all my little friends again! The next visit will be in the spring. History Project r. Uminski s U.S. History classes presented skits dramatizing the M famous Marburg v. Madison court case of 1803. The case defined Judicial Review in the high court's ability to interpret the Constitution. Around Campus Library Update Classes Visit the Library The IWHS Library had an incredible 22 class visits in October. Students came to the library with their English and Biology classes to gain digital instruction on research methods, using Noodle Tools, navigating the library s new Discovery service to find database articles, and accessing digital magazines and e- books. The IWHS Library staff also gave book recommendation talks about the fiction collection, reading diverse voices, and finding interesting books. A huge thank you goes out to Ms. Medrano, Ms. Garza, Ms. Laura Villareal, Ms. Daughtry, and Ms. Alexis Villareal for bringing their classes! he IWHS Library, in T partnership with Dr. Landis, Ms. Doubleday, Ms. Allison, and the IWHS student body, has started a service project for the Children s Hospital of San Antonio. Throughout October and November, IWHS students will make hats for children who are in the hospital over the holidays, battling childhood diseases and ailments such as cancer, leukemia, and genetic diseases. The outpouring of support and interest has been incredible. The library checked out every single loom, and students started bringing their own! In only the first few weeks of the project, students, faculty and staff have already made 129 hats! Our ultimate goal is 250 hats! For more information, and to follow our progress, please click here. Breast Cancer Awareness Assembly he assembly on Oct. 24 was in T recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month, Three speakers presented their struggles with overcoming breast cancer: Doreen Wells, grandmother of Samantha Mizell (junior); Josephine Hurtado, mother of Isabella Hurtado (senior); and Angelica Villarreal, mother of Ashlee Villarreal (Freshman). Shamrock Legacy Pin Incarnate Word High School Alumnae Association unveiled the Shamrock Legacy tie pin last year to recognize students whose families have made IWHS a family tradition. The tie pin features interlocking Shamrocks that symbolize a special Shamrock connection by a mother, aunt, and/or grandmother who graduated from Incarnate Word High School to a granddaughter, daughter, or niece. There is a special significance and sense of pride when students continue a family legacy. Incoming Freshmen and transfer students received their pins at the Tie Ceremony. May our Shamrock little sisters continue the Sisterhood, with many blessings. To date we have 80 legacy students on campus making up 16% of our student population. We have welcomed new families and potential families. Middle School Tours was a successful 3-day event from October 4-6. We were present for those days providing information and answering questions from potential families. The Ambassadors did all the recruiting and did a great job showing off what an amazing campus we have. PTO was also involved at Open House on October 21, again welcoming potential families. We had a great turnout and PTO was charged up and eager to help. A huge shout out to ladies of Shamrock Network and Social Committee. They organized a beautiful morning along with our Director of Admissions, Ms. Quinones. PTO provided a catered continental breakfast by Sodexo along with fresh flowers on every table. The new gym looked beautiful; it was a flawless Open House. Thank you to all the PTO that attended this special day for IWHS. Your Time, Talent and Treasure were so very present that day. PTO is also funding Teacher Wish Lists compiled by each department and approved by Ms. Salazar. PTO will vote on these items at the November 13th meeting.
